What’s next?

With next-generation products likeRosboro’s, glulam is clearly evolving andgaining marketshare each season. “It’staking the same path as I-joists. Fifteenyears ago you didn’t see too many I-joists– now it’s a standard item. Engineeredwood products in general are gettingstronger in the market,” said Sweeney. “Glulam’s flexibility, especially working

with existing products like I-joists, hasmade it popular with builders and that isn’tgoing to go away, it’s just going to getstronger,” Sweeny adds.What about the future of the housing mar-

ket? Crandlemire thinks that, “The housingstarts will pick up again after the currentmarket surplus decreases. This meansthat housing starts will increase again, andglulam will continue to make inroads intonew areas and will be increasingly used bya new generation of builders.” The next generation of glulam is here and

making a difference.

SSpprriinnggffiieelldd,, OOrree..——For years, glulamproducts have slowly been making inroadsin the building industry, and have finallycemented themselves as a mainstay inyards and builder’s projects. There are two big reasons for this accord-

ing to Rosboro, one of the leading manu-facturers of glulam. First of all, the housingmarket explosion of the previous five yearsspread glulam’s use to parts of the countrythat weren’t aware of it before. The secondreason is that builders have begun to rec-ognize glulam’s strong traits on the jobsiteat last.“So far, we’re definitely seeing more

acceptance in the East,” said GeoffCrandlemire, Product DevelopmentManager for Rosboro. “I’m anticipating abig push for our products in Northeaststates like Connecticut, Delaware, Maine,Massachusetts, New Hampshire andVermont.”Other areas of growth expected for

Rosboro in 2007 include Midwest statessuch as Minnesota and Wisconsin, as wellas the Kansas City/St. Louis area. Crandlemire sees more acceptance for

glulam now that builders recognize thestrength of new glulam products and that

they can get it from localdealers quicker than theycould in the past. “Many contractors are

finding that glulam ismore than an attractiveexposed architecturalbeam. We’re seeing thetransition from ‘prettyglulam’ to the next gener-ation of glulam. Theseproducts are applicationspecific, have zero cam-ber, framing widths and I-joist depths,” saysCrandlemire. Popular, next generation

glulam products fromRosboro include TreatedGlulam, 30F Big Beam®,1.8E IJC framing glulam,and the new 1.9ELaminated Columns.“The other big help we

got these past few yearswas the huge housing starts.Quick product availabilitymeant that a lot of builders began usingglulam for the first time. Once they startedusing it, they have refused to go back, sowe have held that marketshare,”Crandlemire said. And once builders got their hands on the

New converts in the East

On the wholesale distribution supply side,glulam has made similar inroads. BillSweeney, Coastal Forest Products in NewHampshire, who started carrying Rosboroproducts last December (and has beencarrying other glulam products for morethan two years) says glulam is gainingpopularity in projects that traditionally usedother EWP products in the past. “When we originally introduced glulam it

was as a replacement for LVL,” Sweeneysaid. “But, as builders have become moreeducated about the benefits of glulam, it’sbecoming the norm for their projects. Andno one is selling single LVL anymore as faras I can tell.”

recently and will be operating in early2008,” Gardner said. “We will be fingerjointing Southern Yellow Pine boards andmouldings and market them under theNexGen name, which stands for Keener-Next Generation. We eventually want toproduce glued-up stock and cut-to-lengthstep treads.”A new division of the company, the Keener

Treated Lumber Center was recently start-ed and this division sells its treated woodproducts in the local area.“We manufacture most of our own lumber

and timbers for the Keener TreatedLumber Center, and get them treated at acustom wood treating plant. At our treateddivision, we sell 1x4’s through 1x12’srough or dressed, 2x4’s through 2x12’sdressed, and treated timbers in 4x4’s,4x6’s, and 6x6’s,” Gardner said. At our Smithfield, N.C., sawmill operation,

KEENER LUMBER Taking Care Both Inside and Out

tries within which NAWLA membersoperate have highly developed charac-teristics that help to shape the role ofboth the wholesale distributor and therole of NAWLA. The industry is highlydiversified both in terms of product andgeography. Aside from species differ-ences, products of the tree include solidlumber, veneer and non-veneer panels,manufactured products such as fencingand decking, and much, much more.NAWLA lumber wholesalers have

evolved the most efficient distributionsystem in the world, helping to makepossible the widespread use of woodproducts in the construction of residen-tial, commercial and industrial buildingsacross the United States and Canada.NAWLA’s role is to aid wholesale distrib-utors in addressing and solving commonindustry challenges in the areas of trans-portation, government and environmen-tal regulations, e-commerce and tech-nology, and certainly ongoing education.

NAWLA’s History

Legend has it that NAWLA was foundedin 1893 as a result of a chanceencounter between John Clark of J.S.H.Clark & Co., Newark, N.J. and twounknown New York lumber wholesalersmeeting on a Boston-bound train. Thesemen discovered that they had a commonerrand – the collection of past due invoic-es from the same customer. As a result of this chance meeting,

Clark set out on a mission by contactingNew York and New Jersey area whole-salers about the formation of an associ-ation. Clark’s quest was to form an asso-ciation of wholesalers for the purpose ofinformation sharing, and not just in thearea of collections, but an exchange ofideas covering all aspects of the whole-sale function. After holding several preliminary plan-

ning sessions in April of 1893, 15 whole-salers approved John Clark’s proposalfor a confederation of wholesalers aswell as his proposed nomenclature ofNational Wholesale Lumber DealersAssociation. An invitation was then sentto all “legitimate lumber wholesalers” inthe geographic area to attend a meetingat the Imperial Hotel in New York City.The group grew to 24 wholesaler com-panies who approved all that the original15 had formulated. Having extendedinvitations to wholesalers in Mass., Md.,Mich., N.J., N.Y., Pa. and R.I. the firstannual meeting of the NationalWholesaler Lumber Dealers Associationwas held at the Imperial Hotel on May15, 1893 with 50 members in atten-dance. This official meeting resulted inthe adoption of the association’s consti-tution and the election of John Clark asits first president. John Clark and the two New York trav-

elers, whose names are lost to us today,began a remarkable legacy of bringingtogether lumber and building productindustry wholesalers, manufacturers andindustry affiliated companies together fora common goal – forming an associationthat would eventually represent a globalnetwork of channel partners in the lum-ber and building materials industry. NAWLA has continued to grow and

learn, serving as an educator and coun-selor on issues within the industry.NAWLA strives to provide publications,learning tools, networking events, andindustry information for its membershipto help them remain informed and betterunderstand current trends and opportu-nities.

NAWLA Wood Basics Course

The Wood Basics Course is an inten-sive, four-day training experience that iscustom-tailored to the forest productsindustry. Individuals with two weeks to

two years of experience in all areas oftheir companies will benefit from thisprogram. Course topics include ForestEcology, Engineered Products,Transportation, Grading, StructuralPanels, Lumber Manufacturing,Dimension Lumber, Ecology andSilviculture. Field trips to a workinginstructional forest and mill tours arealso included.

University of Industrial Distribution (UID)

The University of IndustrialDistribution is held annually atIndiana University/Purdue UniversityIndianapolis. This program, attended byover 400 participants each year, is aconcentrated educational programfocused on the unique needs of theentire industrial wholesale distributionindustry. Numerous NAWLA memberstake part in the event every year.

NAWLA Buyers’ School

The second offering of the School in2007 includes several enhancements bythe NAWLA Education Committee. This3 1/2 day School begins with an interac-tive session on Supply ChainManagement and the principle attributesof an effective negotiation process. TheSchool also includes several ex-panded offerings: session on InventoryManagement, session on HedgingStrategies for Office Wholesalers, aTransportation & Logistics Panel ofindustry experts (office wholesaler,stocking distributor, manufacturer, rail-road company and a logistics manager),numerous industry-specific case studiesand an ethics program. The 2007NAWLA Buyers’ School will be held atthe Hyatt Chicago On The River Walk —Downtown, December 10-13, 2007.

NAWLA Webinars

NAWLA conducts monthly and quickresponse educational Webinars whichallow participants to stay abreast of crit-ical issues facing the industry from thecomfort of their respective offices.Webinars run for approximately 60 min-utes and address a variety of topicssuch as LEEDs, GBI – Green BuildingInitiative, certified wood products, evalu-ating employees, hiring new managers,succession planning, and more. TheNAWLA Webinar schedule is regularlyupdated at www.nawla.org.

Executive Management Institute (EMI)

This powerful and comprehensive five-day program is geared to senior levelmanagers, officers and CEO’s of forestproduct wholesalers, manufacturers andNAWLA service affiliate companies.Plans are already underway to offer theNAWLA EMI in 2008. The EMI wasdeveloped from the ground up by theNAWLA Education Committee in consul-tation with the graduate school faculty ofSouthern Methodist University CoxSchool of Business, ranked in the topten business schools in the UnitedStates.

These regularly scheduled workshopsare held in various locations throughoutthe year, and are an important additionto your own in-house training and edu-cational programs.
