Serviced Residences – Increasingly Popular

(Continued on pg 6)

Most serviced residences also provide business centre facilitiesand meeting rooms. Some Ascott properties are equipped withvideoconferencing facilities.

As in hotels, recreational amenities at most upper-tier andluxury-tier serviced residences include a gym, swimming pooland residents’ lounge, where guests can unwind and networkwith other residents. Services include front office, maid services, and complimentary breakfast. Other convenient services rangefrom grocery delivery to babysitting.

In many cities, Ascott’s residences organise activities to helpguests build social and business networks, understand theculture, and enjoy family recreation.

Space to entertain friends

A supportive community

Serviced residences are gaining popularity amongbusiness executives on overseas assignments, ranging from a week to a year.

Designed to feel like home, a serviced residencecombines the spaciousness, privacy and comfortof an apartment with the facilities of aninternational hotel.

The serviced apartment offers more space than ahotel room. Like a home, it has fully furnishedliving / dining areas and a kitchen. Residents caninvite friends or business associates over for a meal, without their guests having to sit on their beds.

They can spread their paperwork and laptop overan entire dining table, instead of the small desk ofa hotel room.

They can whip up a gourmet meal in a fully-equipped kitchen with full-sized refrigerator andoven / stove, anytime of the day or night. Practicalitems such as a safe, iron and ironing board andhairdryer are usually at hand in the apartment.

Communicating FastEn-suite facilities such as high-speed broadbandInternet access enable the corporate executive toquickly connect to his office and clients, while cableTV and home entertainment systems help him keepup with the latest news and entertainment, in thecomfort of his living room.

Designer comfort at home

More Privacy and SecurityAnother plus point for serviced residences is that their guestsfeel a greater sense of privacy and security. The propertiesare usually smaller than hotels with less people traffic, andunlike hotels where common areas have public access, serviced residences are private. Due to the longer stay profilesof serviced residence guests, staff know residents by name, and can quickly pick out any strangers.

Many who have lived in a serviced residence cite itssupportive community as a key benefit. As guests stay longerat serviced residences, they get to know each other in passingand build friendships. Guest programmes held by theresidences further facilitate this sense of shared experiencesand looking out for one another, which help the executivefeel at home more quickly in an unfamiliar city.

Star Treatment

Mehndi, the traditional art of body painting

with henna dye, enjoyed a recent revival

when spotted on Hollywood stars Madonna

and Gwen Stefani. Members of the Ascott

International Ladies Club in Kuala Lumpur

were quick to treat themselves to the star

experience in May. They watched with delight

as the mehndi artist adorned their hands and

feet with intricate designs they chose.

Magical Night

A magician had the children in stitches over

his comic performance at Somerset Grand

Cairnhill, Singapore. His skit was part of

the line-up for Ascott’s August residents’

gathering which included a financial planning

seminar by Citibank’s wealth management

experts, and a table pool competition.

A Day With Clay

Residents of Somerset Chancellor Court and Somerset Ho Chi Minh

City spent a day deep in clay at a pottery workshop in July. Under an

instructor’s guidance, they braved the potter’s wheel to shape bowls

amid much good-natured banter over some hilarious and some

successful attempts.

Natural Attraction

Residents from The Ascott Kuala Lumpur were transported from

the bustling city to the green haven of the Forest Research

Institute of Malaysia in June. They hiked through a rainforest,

and examined rare plant species and towering tropical trees.

They also checked out the 120-year-old Trengganu House, made

entirely of Chengal timber and constructed without nails.

Learning By Drinking

How to judge a wine’s ‘bouquet’? What wine

goes with cordon bleu? Guests from Ascott’s

Singapore properties learnt these and more at

a wine appreciation talk by sommelier Randy

See at The Ascott Singapore’s lounge in July.

They also wined, dined and networked over

Spanish wines and cheese, for what better way

to learn about wine than by drinking it?

Spice Girls

Members of the Ascott International Ladies Club in Beijing

spiced up an August afternoon with a class in Korean kimchi

and Chinese pickles. Cooking up a storm at the lounge of The

Ascott Beijing, they chopped pots of cabbage and garlic in

between lively conversation. Cooking has been called an art,

but it’s also a delicious way to network.

Christmas In July

Ascott’s corporate clients and business associates

in New Zealand celebrated Christmas in July at

The Ascott Metropolis, Auckland. While the

wintry wind blew outside, a jazz band and

gift-bearing Santa brought festive warmth and

joy to the party.

Pole Dancing

Ascott’s residents in Manila have taken to pole

dancing. Since June, they have attended lessons

on tinikling, the national dance of the Philippines.

For the residents’ party in September, the poolside

of Somerset Millennium was converted to a dance

floor as the guests skipped in tandem to the

clapping bamboo poles.

The residents also learnt

to make halo-halo, a

popular local dessert,

and sampled tropical

fruits like rambutans and

durians.

Wild Outing

A slithering scaly visitor joined residents from the Singapore properties for breakfast at the Singapore Zoo in June.

A few guests gingerly seized the opportunity to stroke the giant python, one of the many attractions at the

award-winning zoo. With children and cameras in tow, guests had a great afternoon posing for photos with polar

bears and orang utans. Mr and Mrs Pradeep Pant from The Ascott Singapore thought the trip “good and refreshing”.

Art For Charity’s Sake

The exhibition and sale of hand-embroidered

silk artworks at Somerset Chancellor Court

in June received heart-warming support from

residents and staff at Ascott’s Vietnam

properties. The charity event was held in

support of Ho Chi Minh City’s Disabled and

Homeless Children’s Fund. The over 200

pieces also helped display the embroidery skills

of Vietnamese women to an international

audience.
