Collette Delivers Europe’s Greatest Destinations!
When it comes to the best of europe, vacationing in the alps is one
experience any clientele can enjoy.
from long runs and diverse slopes to charming villages and an
expectedly fun nightlife, ski destinations that lie along this region
offer visitors a peek — no pun intended — at the in-crowd, a taste of
Mother Nature and an eye-opening landscape well worth the trip.
The Mediterranean coast of France, Switzerland, northern Italy and
Austria offer challenges to the pros and getaways for the beginners.
This culture invites skiers and non-skiers alike to hideaways tucked
into the Alps. The majority of these sought-after sites do not mimic
the wealthy playgrounds of Aspen or Park City, but rather offer a
more laid-back form of a winter escape nestled within the terrain’s
natural landscape.
Tradition at its Best
The first and arguably most notorious ski destination in Europe is
austria. Offering regions filled with old-world villages and friendly
service, this sporty area is the birthplace of modern Alpine skiing and
therefore offers a very traditional experience for those gracing the
slopes, as well as a notorious après ski scene.
St. Anton is the place to go to get a taste of real Austrian flavor.
Famous for its historic atmosphere, guests can ski into the village,
take on the advanced slopes in the Arlberg region, and partake in
a scene that attracts Euro partygoers and Royal families alike. This
destination is best for the confident skiers seeking an action-packed
environment of late-night discos and early morning runs.
Another popular choice for travelers, especially during the holidays,
is Kitzbühel. Offering a bit more of a high-end stay, this town is
known as one of the liveliest and most beautiful areas in Austria with
its luxury resorts, snowboard parks, winter hiking trails and a more
citified social scene.

To take part in Austria’s famous après-ski scene, visit two of the country’s most renowned bars – Mooserwirt Bar and the Krazy Kanguruh, both in St. Anton. These friendly bars get rowdy towards the end of the day, situated on top of the final run into St. Anton. Mooserwirt transforms around 4:00 p.m. into a party while a DJ plays euro dance tunes and the crowds pour in to drink. The famed bar claims to sell more beer per square meter than anywhere else in Austria. The Krazy Kanguruh also gets busy around 4:00 but hosts a slightly younger crowd in its two bars where table dancing is not unheard of. But don’t get too carried away, because after an afternoon of fun, sliding down the hill into town might be your only option.

Après-ski is the French term for “after ski”
used to describe the social scene happening
after a day on the slopes.

Braving the Terrainfrance has become ground for some of the hardest slopes, housing the highest peak in the Alps, Mont Blanc. Resorts here are surrounded by untouched wildlife and most towns offer a quaint and charming atmosphere. Though mostly visited by natives, France’s resorts have seasons that tend to last the longest due to the mountains’ high altitude.
Chamonix, the location of the base of Mont Blanc, site of the first winter Olympics, and possibly the oldest and most famous ski resort in France, provides some of the most elite slopes with dramatic views and hard-core runs. Similarly, La Grave, which should be reserved for experts only due to its natural dangers, hosts some of the most challenging lift-served terrain in the world. This is also a popular location for ice climbing.
If traveling with beginners in France, visit the iconic backdrop of Val D’Isere, which offers ski schools and a greater variety of slopes to its visitors, including well-groomed areas as well as unmarked runs.
6La Grave, France
7
Italian SiestaThough not as well traveled for skiing as some of the other countries, Italy’s slopes can be described as a destination for relaxing in comfort. Those traveling here are not the hard-core skiers you see elsewhere, but rather guests looking to enjoy a great vacation of food, wine and snow in locations such as the spa town of Saint Vincent.
Cortina, Italy, is famous for this type of vacation among its luxury resorts, offering fabulous dining and zero pressure to actually ski. Another high-end and popular destination is Cortina d’Ampezzo, which is reveled as one of the most beautiful settings in the Alps. Clients may recognize this area as a backdrop from several movies. Part of Italy’s mountains’ popularity can be attributed to their proximity to the beautiful Milan and Venice. Another appeal is the diversity of winter sports offered along the foot of Mont Blanc.
Dolomites, South Tyrol, Italy
Vacationing in StyleFor clients with an eye for glamour and who are perhaps a little less advanced in their ski skills, send them to Switzerland. Though there isn’t much of a hopping après ski scene, there are pristine slopes, great shopping, notable restaurants and spas within its charming and picturesque towns.
Hosting some of the most state-of-the-art slopes and lifts, the attractive St. Moritz stands as probably the most popular and extravagant destination to visit in Switzerland with a long history of winter tourism. Cross-country skiing takes place here, and mountains cater mostly to intermediate skiers. For beginners and families, suggest the scenic Kandersteg, also a cross-country paradise, where many learn to ski among the easier slopes and laid-back atmosphere.
Zermatt is another popular destination situated at the feet of Switzerland’s highest peaks. Host of the world’s second biggest lift-served vertical drop, this village is a popular place for hiking and is unique in that it’s car-free.
Though ski seasons in Europe tend to vary due to glaciers in the area, resorts start to open with test weekends in October, while a few premiere in September, and stay open until May. Popularity starts to pick up in November, but the true ski season starts at the beginning of December. February usually brings the best weather, but also the biggest crowds. As spring creeps in, the lower resorts become a little more difficult for beginners, but higher resorts are in good condition into early May. Only a handful of resorts stay open all summer.
Europe’s Ski Season Tired of hitting the slopes? Luckily, Italy’s famed spa towns are prevalent even in the Alps. Saint Vincent in Val D’ Aosta, is famous for its mineral springs, which many travel to for supposed healing abilities said to ease stomach, liver and intestinal illnesses. The town also offers hiking and a popular casino. To visit a historically proven spa resort, have clients stay at Bagni Di Bormio, which hosts two spa and well-ness centers, Bagni Nuovi and Bagni Vecchi. Located at the base of Mount Reit near Bormio, this resort dates back two thousand years and features grottos, Roman baths and a gorgeous outdoor pool overlooking the valley.

No matter what type of skier your
client is, vacationing in any of the
countries that grace Europe’s Alps is
promised to be a breathtaking escape
full of adventures, charm and the best
Europe has to offer.

The Tour Directors’ intimate knowledge of Europe continues to be
a key factor in At Leisure as in all Trafalgar vacations. Trafalgar’s

2011 to be an exceptional year of expansion
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has embarked on its largest product
expansion with the introduction of three new ships and a rich array
of exciting new itineraries in 2011. “We’re very fortunate to have a
parent company that has the vision, acumen, financial resources and
stability to prudently invest in the growth of our company,” proudly
states Guy Young, president of Uniworld. “Our goal has never been
to be the largest river cruise line, but to be the absolute best river
cruise line. Our ongoing quest is to continue to build a company that
consistently delivers and exceeds our clients’ expectations in all the
ways which truly matter when it comes to creating exceptional vaca-
tion moments and memories,” furthers Young.
In a style reflective of Uniworld’s enduring commitment to create an
exceptional experience for travelers, the new ultra-luxurious River
Antoinette, sailing Castles along the Rhine, will set a new standard
in river cruising innovation with top deck staterooms and suites offer-
ing full open-air private balconies that, with the touch of a switch,
will raise the glass to create a completely enclosed conservatory.
Uniworld’s second new ship, the Douro Spirit, will sail Portugal and
Spain’s spectacular UNESCO World Heritage-designated Douro River
Valley. And, finally, Uniworld will be re-entering the Russian market
with the launch of the River Victoria, projected to be the most beau-
tiful and comfortable ship to sail the Imperial Waterways of Russia’s
Volga River.
Complementing Uniworld’s beautiful new ships will be six new itiner-
aries. Discover the “Treasures of Prague, the Rhine & Main” on a 10-
