In a little over two months, we will be wrapping up our Capital Campaign, From Generation to Generation. Thanks to the generosity of over a hundred of our families, we are more than half-way to our goal of $5 million. I am confident that as more and more families join the Campaign and step up to the plate we will reach our goal and perhaps even surpass it. This makes me very proud of the people of Queen of All Saints who have always rallied to support this parish. This time we are rallying behind a project that will transform our former convent, the Benedict Center, into an education and formation center for the next 50 years. I feel a certain sense of satisfaction in knowing that our generation of parishioners of Queen of All Saints care just as much about providing for the future of this great parish as those

who have gone before us. We simply would not have the parish we do today were it not for the sacrifices made by previous generations. Now it’s our turn, hence the title of our Campaign, From Generation to Generation.

After Christmas and at the conclusion of our Campaign, I will begin a six month sabbatical. ‘Sabbatical’ is a word derived from the Hebrew word sabbath which refers to the seventh day on which God rested. It literally means a ceasing or resting from work for a certain period of time. In recent times, ‘sabbatical’ has come to mean any extended absence in the career of an individual in order to achieve something beyond what can be achieved in regular work time. In the modern sense, one takes a sabbatical typically to fulfill some goal, e.g., writing a book or doing extensive research. Some universities and other institutional employers of scientists, physicians, and academics offer the opportunity to qualify for paid sabbatical as an employee benefit. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, a priest is eligible for a sabbatical every seven years.

A few months ago Archbishop Cupich approved my request for this sabbatical. Twice before in the administrations of Cardinals Bernardin and George, I have requested time for a sabbatical. Both times the two Cardinals gave me a new job. So I was a little apprehensive about asking Archbishop Cupich. He was very gracious, however, and noted that I had never been on a sabbatical in over forty years of service as a priest; and he enthusiastically agreed it was time. During the six months of my sabbatical, I will be working to finish a book on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I began over ten years ago when I was the executive director of the U. S. Bishops’ Office for the Catechism. I am going to a warm place and will hold myself to a disciplined writing schedule so I can complete the work. I will also take some time for a spiritual retreat, some time with friends and some plain, old vacation.

What this practically means for Queen of All Saints is that I will be gone from January 1 – June 30, 2017. Whenever a pastor is going to be away from his parish for such a length of time, an administrator is appointed to oversee the day-to-day operation of the parish until the pastor returns. I am very pleased to announce that Archbishop Cupich has appointed Father Simon Braganza to be the administrator of Queen of All Saints Parish in my absence. I’m sure things will run very smoothly under his leadership and that of the generous and capable pastoral and rectory staffs. In his letter to me, Archbishop Cupich indicated that I would resume my responsibilities as pastor on July 1, 2017.

I earnestly hope that the wonderful people of Queen of All Saints will give Father Simon and the other members of the staff here the same support and encouragement they have given me over the past six years. Part of the reason a priest takes a sabbatical is so that he can return refreshed and renewed for the next phase of his priestly life. The next phase of my priestly life is to continue as pastor of Queen of All Saints. And I couldn’t be happier about that prospect. Please keep me in your prayers. God bless you.

Monsignor John Pollard

QAS Alumni Spotlight Name: Thomas A. Reardon III Year of Graduation: 1987 High School: Loyola Academy College: University of Iowa Who was your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher when attending QAS was Mr. Kretja, our 7th/8th grade Science teacher. He was passionate about Science and encouraged his students to appreciate the importance of Science in our daily lives. He created an excellent environment of learning, and always said “Science is that simple and it has been around since the beginning of time!” What was your favorite class and why? Science was my favorite class when attending QAS. I recall the numerous experiments we performed from dissecting worms and frogs to learning about the scientific method, periodic elements, composition of the earth, and chemical reactions. In addition, I really enjoyed participating in the QAS annual Science Fair. What extracurricular activities did you participate in, what one did you like the most and why? I enjoyed participating in extracurricular activities at QAS. I was involved in student council and an after school Science club. In addition, I loved to participate in sports which included football, basketball and softball. I enjoyed competing with my friends. My two favorite sports at QAS were football and basketball, defending the NWCC championship banners that hung in the gym for years. Coach Hanson (JV) and Coach Atkins (Varsity) not only taught fundamentals of both sports, but also made the games enjoyable. I remember a famous quote they borrowed from Knute Rockne, University of Notre Dame Football Coach, - “Win or lose, do it fairly!”

What is your favorite memory of Queen of All Saints School? By far, my favorite memory of QAS would have to be the great friendships I developed from kindergarten through eight grade. I attended high school with many of them and kept in touch throughout college and after graduation. As a matter of fact, many have moved back to the neighborhood and are raising their families in the QAS parish, just as I am. I am very proud to send both of my children to QAS. Each time I attend a school event, it brings back memories of my childhood and the great community of QAS.

What convinced you to send your children to QAS? Our QAS School has always been an integral part of our QAS Parish. QAS has always been about the people! Our teachers, our clergy, our coaches and our parent volunteers are the building blocks that create the strong foundations of our school. Sending both of our children to QAS will not only equip them with the tools they will need in preparation for future academics, but will also strengthen their faith and foster self-respect and respect for others.

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?

REASON 47

Most reasonable people understand that if something is really worthwhile, it will require some measure of sacrifice to be achieved. Parents who raise children know very well how much they sacrifice for their children. Young people who seek a fulfilling career learn very fast how much sacrifice and dedication it takes to earn one. Soldiers in battle often speak of the sacrifices they willingly make on behalf of their buddies. If some level of sacrifice is part of achieving a goal or an objective we have set for ourselves, then we will most likely appreciate the achievement all that much more. There’s no doubt that it takes a degree of personal sacrifice to get to Mass every Sunday. Putting other things aside for the moment; getting up, getting ready and getting to the church on time; and being attentive to what unfolds once we get there are just a few examples of personal sacrifices related to our attendance at Sunday Mass. But these pale in comparison to the sacrifice Christ made on our behalf. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time - October 16, 2016

Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, talent and treasure,

in response to the great gifts God has given us.

“…be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient...” - 2 Timothy 4:2 It is not always convenient to be a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our busy and materialistic world get in the way.

Now add our own pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship lifestyle may be downright uncomfortable! Re-member, God didn’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.

Thanks to the Men’s Club for hosting Oktoberfest! Here’s what was served to our 900 folks in attendance:

• 1,000 Brats • 500 Thuringers • 400 Hot Dogs • 100 lbs of German Potato Salad • 60 lbs of Sauerkraut • 1,000 bags of chips • 1,000 bottles of water • 50 gallons of ice cream • Lots and lots of popcorn and cotton candy

And thanks to everyone who helped with setup, cooking,

serving and take down. Our parish is truly blessed!

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.

The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.

“Our Lady of Good Help” and “The Shroud”

All are invited to view these two videos on Tuesday, October 25, 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Name Room. Our Lady of Good Help is a documentary exploring the incredible events that took place at the Shrine. It gives a closer look at the life of Adele Brise, a woman who saw the “Queen of Heaven”. It is one of Wisconsin’s most historic landmarks.
