October 15, 2017 · Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
100th Anniversary of the Fatima Apparitions (Part 3 of 4)
On March 25, 1984, Pope John Paul II with the world’s bishops consecrated the world, and Russia, to the Immaculate
Heart of Mary. Why has Russia not converted to the Catholic Faith, and why have we not seen the triumph of Mary’s Im-
maculate Heart and the period of peace that she promised? Here some other important facts for consideration:
In a May 29, 1930 letter which Sister Lucia wrote to her spiritual director, Fr. José Gonçalves, S.J., she makes clear that
the messages by Our Lady of December 10, 1925 (re the 5 First Saturday devotion) and of June 13, 1929 (asking for the
consecration of Russia) should be interpreted together in regard to the conversion of Russia. Father Gonçalves had asked
Lucia to explain the First Saturday devotion of Communion in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the persecu-
tions in Russia. In her reply, Lucia said that after the Pope in union with the bishops consecrated Russia, the religious perse-
cution in Russia would end; but that the conversion of the Russian people to the Catholic Faith, and bringing them into un-
ion with Rome under the Pope, would come about through the First Saturday Communions of Reparation to Mary’s Im-
maculate Heart. Here are her words: “If I am not mistaken, the Good Lord promises to put an end to the persecutions in Rus-
sia if the Holy Father condescends to make, and likewise ordains the Bishops of the Catholic World to make a solemn and
public act of reparation and consecration of Russia to the Most Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In response to the end of
this persecution, His Holiness is to promise to approve of and recommend the practice of the already mentioned devotion of
reparation [that is, the Communion of Reparation on 5 First Saturdays].”
The late renowned Fatima scholar and promoter of the cause of Jacinta and Francisco, Fr. Joaquín Alonso, commenting
on Lucia’s letter, says: “We knew already that in July, 1917, the relation between Russia and the Immaculate Heart of Mary
concerned not only consecration but also devotion of reparation. What is now explicitly indicated in this document is this:
the devotion of reparation has not only the purpose of individual holiness but the special providential purpose of conversion
for Russia and the avoidance of the evils which result from her non-conversion. We see therefore that logically the practice
of this devotion [Communion of reparation to Mary’s Immaculate Heart on First Saturdays for the conversion of sinners] is
the means for obtaining the conversion of Russia through the consecration of Russia.”
It is most fitting that the conversion of Russia should rest on two related conditions, the first being the collegial consecra-
tion of the country by the Pope and bishops to Mary’s Immaculate Heart (and through her Heart, to the Sacred Heart of Je-
sus); the second being the First Saturday devotion of Communion of Reparation to her Immaculate Heart on the part of the
faithful for the conversion of sinners: The first involves the ruling hierarchy of Christ’s Mystical Body, the successors to St.
Peter and the Apostles; and the second involves all the members of that Body. For such a great and important task – the con-
version of an entire nation – God wills that all the members of the Church participate. In God’s plan the consecration of
Russia would end the religious persecution there, while the First Saturday Communion of Reparation devotion would bring
about the conversion of the Russian people to the Catholic Faith, in union under the Pope in Rome.
Moreover, the Blessed Virgin promises the faithful who participate in this great work of conversion a reward for them-
selves: all the graces necessary for their salvation at the hour of death, or what is commonly called the grace of final perse-
verance. It makes perfect sense, then, that Our Lord should command that after the consecration has been completed and the
persecution ends, the Pope “approve of and recommend” the First Saturday devotion of reparation.
Of great significance is what happened in Russia after St. John Paul II’s March 25, 1984 consecration of Russia to
Mary’s Immaculate Heart. On October 14, 1993 Sister Lucia, in an interview with Portuguese journalist Carlos Evaristo,
made this remarkable statement: ‘The Consecration of 1984 has prevented a nuclear war which would have occurred in
1985.’” How so? In the early 1980’s there was mounting tension between the U.S.S.R. and the West, prompted by President
Reagan’s military buildup and culminating in the 1983 European missile crisis, at which time the Soviets were seriously
contemplating a pre-emptive nuclear strike in Western Europe in order to forego the economic collapse of their empire.
What caused Moscow, within a few months, to abandon this plan? As Italian news journalist Antonio Socci tells it: “One of
the facts that might have determined this decision, according to the military expert Alberto Leoni, was the ‘accident’ which
took out of service the Soviet military potential. This accident is the explosion of the Severomorsk arsenal, located on the
North Sea: ‘Without that missile facility, which was directed towards the Atlantic Ocean,” explained Leoni, “the Soviet Un-
ion didn’t have any hope of victory. For this reason, the military option was cancelled. Well, that event occurred only 2
months after the Consecration made by the Pope, but above all it’s the day that counts. It was May 13, 1984, the anniver-
sary and Feast of Our Lady of Fatima and of the assassination attempt against the Pope. At that point, the Soviet Union was
forced to find another way: the (desperate) perestroika of the Soviet system. Thus, with the death of [Konstantin]
Chernenko, a few months after the consecration made by the Pope, Mikhail Gorbachev was called to power in Moscow.
Socci says that the Soviets had planned to attack England and assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

SANCTUARY RENOVATION:
PHASE I COMPLETE; PHASE II TO FOLLOW
Our new altar is in (Phase I) and looks beautiful (the adoring
angels will be in next week, with some additional altar light-
ing). Our parish set aside $130,000 of parish funds for the altar
fabrication, the total cost of which was $156,000. Remaining
balance ($26,000) has been paid through individual donations.
Individual donations at this time total $77,260. If we sub-
tract $26,000 for Phase I (altar fabrication), that leaves us with
$51,260 for Phase II.
The estimated cost for Phase II is $140,000. That means we
need another $88,740 to pay for Phase II. We ask that people
who may have been waiting to donate toward the project wait
no longer. Here are estimated costs of the artwork/painting to
be done, which make up most of the cost of Phase II:
- painting two big murals at sides of altar: $20,000 each*
- painting the mural behind the altar (angels): $10,000*
- painting ten Carmelite saints: $5000 each
*One can donate part of the funds needed for these
paintings; any donation is most welcome!
And the estimated cost of removing the two statues in the
sanctuary (St. Francis and St. Catherine of Siena, patron saints
of Italy) and the marble backdrops, and mounting them on col-
umns, is $10,800.
Let us pray for the intercession of the great Italian artist, Bl. Fra
Angelico, that this project may give glory to God & Our Lady
of Mount Carmel!
Donations may be made by check, or online:

One may donate all at once or over time.
