Dear Parents, As we are approaching the beginning of our Confirmation Class, I would like to share with you some thoughts, and I would like to start with a couple of quotations that I found almost by chance online: One says: “our world has reached a critical stage, there is no longer any relation-ship between children and their parents”. And the second one: “this youth is […]lazy, they will never be like the youth of the past”. They look like two quotes from newspapers of the present time, right? The truth is that the first one belongs to a

priest of the Ancient Egypt, 2000 b.c., the second one is an engraving on a clay vessel from Ancient Babylon, 3000 b.c.

These quotes help us to see that to be a parent is an “ancient” challenge! The fatigue and the concerns to raise a child has always existed.

Our youth are not “crooked” or just “wrong”, as many times we hear people saying. Our youth are simply asking for help! Especially in this time of Pandemic!

It is obvious that Covid-19 has brought enormous uncertainty for young people, pushing them into an invisible prison of isolation. Haphazard remote learning, not being able to go out and meet with their friends or playing sports, has taken a toll on their emotional and mental well-being. If even before the Pandemic the sta-tistics would say that phenomena related to traumas in the sphere of social and familiar relationships such as bulimia, anorexia or depression were skyrocketing, this is even more so in the last few months where a comput-er or a smartphone has become their only way to interact. Pornography has become the real Pandemic among the teenagers!

Psychiatrists and Psychologists confirm something that I myself had also thought many times: the youth of today struggle to accept themselves and they almost feel unworthy if they accept themselves. That is why their only outlet is to sometimes punish themselves; it should not surprise us the cutting and drinking is on a rampant among young people today.

We are in front of a generation that does not believe in been loved. Therefore, I think that our first duty as parents and educators is to knock on their doors and to open it for mercy and forgiveness.

What did God do when He saw the fragility and the unhappiness of His children? He did one simple thing: He loved them. St. Paul to the Romans says: “God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sin-ners, Christ died for us.” To be loved means that God loves us before we become “good kids”. The experience of being forgiven, and loved in this scandalous way for who they are, is what our youth are lacking today. This was the experience of Zacchaeus, the tax collector, Mathew the disciple, not to mention Peter who became the first Pope. These and many other men who failed in their lives were saved by the “loving gaze of Jesus Christ”.

My wish is that in the hours I will spend together with your children preparing them for Confirmation, they may come across this “loving gaze” and discover the Beauty of the gift of Life!

The meeting will be on Saturdays from 11am to 12pm At the Fr. Thomas Hall (St. Thomas Church basement)

and we will practice social distancing. We will start on Saturday Nov 7th

Queridos padres, A medida que nos acercamos al comienzo de nuestra Clase de Confirmación,

me gustaría compartir con ustedes algunas ideas y me gustaría comenzar con un par de citas que encontré casi por casualidad en línea:

Uno dice: “nuestro mundo ha llegado a una etapa crítica, ya no hay relación entre los niños y sus padres”. Y el segundo: “esta juventud es […] perezosa, nunca serán como la juventud de antes”. Parecen dos citas actuales de periódicos, ¿verdad? Lo cierto es que el primero pertenece a un sacerdote del Antiguo Egipto, 2000 a.C., el segundo es un grabado en una vasija de barro de la Antigua Babilonia, 3000 a.C.

¡Estas citas nos ayudan a ver que ser padre es un desafío “antiguo”! El cansan-cio y las preocupaciones por criar a un hijo siempre han existido.

Nuestra juventud no es “torcida” o simplemente “equivocada”, como muchas veces escuchamos decir a la gente.

¡Nuestra juventud simplemente está pidiendo ayuda! ¡Especialmente en este tiempo de pandemia! Es obvio que el Covid-19 ha traído una enorme incertidumbre para los jóvenes, empujándolos a una pri-

sión invisible de aislamiento. El imprevisto aprendizaje remoto, no poder salir y reunirse con sus amigos o prac-ticar deportes, ha afectado su bienestar emocional y mental. Si incluso antes de la Pandemia las estadísticas de-cían que se estaban disparando fenómenos relacionados con traumas en el ámbito de las relaciones sociales y familiares como la bulimia, la anorexia o la depresión, más aún en los últimos meses donde se ha convertido una computadora o un teléfono inteligente en su única forma de interactuar. ¡La pornografía se ha convertido en la verdadera pandemia entre los adolescentes!

Psiquiatras y Psicólogos confirman algo que yo mismo también había pensado muchas veces: los jóve-nes de hoy luchan por aceptarse a sí mismos y casi se sienten indignos si se aceptan a sí mismos. Por eso su úni-ca salida es a veces castigarse a sí mismos; no debería sorprendernos que el hacerse daño y la bebida sean ram-pantes entre los jóvenes de hoy.

Estamos frente a una generación que no cree en ser amada. Por eso, creo que nuestro primer deber como padres y educadores es tocar a sus puertas y abrirlas a la

misericordia y al perdón.

¿Qué hizo Dios cuando vio la fragilidad y la infelicidad de sus hijos? Hizo una cosa simple: los amaba. San Pablo a los Romanos dice: "Dios demuestra su amor por nosotros en esto: cuando todavía éramos pecado-res, Cristo murió por nosotros". Ser amado significa que Dios nos ama antes de convertirnos en " niños buenos ". La experiencia de ser perdonados y amados de esta manera escandalosa por quienes son, es lo que le falta a nuestra juventud hoy. Esta fue la experiencia de Zaqueo, el recaudador de impuestos, Mateo el discípulo, sin mencionar a Pedro, quien se convirtió en el primer Papa. Estos y muchos otros hombres que fracasaron en sus vidas fueron salvados por la “mirada amorosa de Jesucristo”.

¡Mi deseo es que en las horas que pasaré junto con sus hijos preparándolos para la Confirmación, puedan ellos encontrarse con esta “mirada amorosa” y descubrir la Belleza del don de la Vida!

La clase serán los sábados de 11 a.m. a 12 p.m. En el sótanos de la iglesia de Sto. Thomas y practicaremos el distanciamiento social. Comenzaremos el sábado 7 de noviembre
