AN INTRODUCTION TO ME

My name is Patricia Izbicki. I am seventeen years old. I am a senior in high school. I am an only child. However, I have three dogs and two ferrets to make up for it. My passions include learning about the world around me, excelling in my education, excelling in tennis, and excelling in piano.

WHAT DID I DO TO ATTAIN MY HOURS?

First, I volunteered nine hours at The Northwest Florida Zoo. I mostly helped with the yard work needed around the zoo. In turn, I got to learn about and see many amazing and interesting animals.Second, I volunteered at the Humane Society of Pensacola. I helped to walk the dogs. I also spent much of my time spoiling the dogs with treats and much rubbing. Third, I volunteered at West Florida Hospital. I assisted in the physical therapy unit of the hospital. I helped in transporting patients, filing paperwork, restocking linens, gloves, etc., communicating with the patients, and assisting the physical therapists with the patients.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The best way to get involved in any of these activities is to call, email or pay a visit to your local hospital, pet shelter, or zoo. Volunteers are always needed and are greatly respected and appreciated everywhere.

What I didFor 24 hours, I volunteered at the Full Circle Farm in Sunnyvale, CA. In the month of April, the farm was organizing an Earth Day festival. We created activities for families to have fun while becoming aware of how to keep the environment clean and keep themselves healthy.

For 16 hours, I volunteered at the Sunnyvale Public Library. Along with othervolunteers, I shelved books, prepared materials for children’s crafts, cleaned, and reorganized the all the children’s hardcover books.

Anyone Can Do It

There is always something to do. If you want to volunteer at your local library, ask at the information desk or search the library’s website.

Volunteering at a farm is a great way to be outdoors and watch how the food you eat is grown. Look through local newspapers or search around the internet. You never know what you may find.

• The most memorable moment was when an elderly lady came to the hospital and she was scared. Her family wasn’t able to come while she was having surgery and she really didn’t want to be alone. So I sat down in her room with her before and after her surgery. We watched TV and talked. We talked about my dreams and the dream she had when she was my age. She told me about how rough her child hood was but she still grew up and became what she wanted to be, a lawyer. She really inspired me because some of the things she went through I went through and felt how she felt.

• Volunteering at St. Vincent hospital was an astounding experience!! I learned so many things and was able to help people. I learned how to deal with different situations. I met various people and saw people I knew. I could definitely consider volunteering there again
