Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I look forward to an exciting school year.

Robotics Competition The Stacey Robotics team competed in the San Antonio BEST

Robotics competition on Saturday. The competition involved 28 local teams and more than 40 hubs across the country which

sees over 10,000 students from several hundred schools competing in the competition. This year’s game required the students to build a robot from provided materials in 6 weeks that could identify and sort defective golf balls and Easter

eggs into their appropriate locations in 3 minutes. The Stacey team finished in second place and earned an invitation to compete in the state championships later in November at the University of North Texas Denton. They also received an

award for most photogenic robot.

Team members were drivers Joel Ibarra, Nathaniel Contreras, and Kevin Effingham. Supporting team members were Jasmine

Stringer, Trae Gaennes, and Omar Mostafa. A scholarship in the amount of $40,000.00 a year for 4 years is awarded to a SA BEST Stacey Robotics team member who wishes to pursue a

degree in engineering, science, or technology as an undergraduate at St. Mary’s University.

5th grade Science Investigation

Students in Mrs. Mendoza’s science class learned about energy last week. They discovered that

energy may occur in many forms and as it transfers within a system (solar-cooker/sun) it interacts with

matter (hotdog!) to create change (cooked hot dog!). As an added bonus, they can now help at the next

bar-b-que!

SUPER READERS

“Hard work brings its own rewards”. SFA students in Mrs. Torre’s class are living the dream. They worked hard and made personal commitments to read at least 80 minutes a week for the first quarter of this school year. The reward was a class celebration, and the

students were given the privilege to wear pajamas and play games. Mrs. Payne, SFA facilitator, gifted the class with key chains, food coupons, silly bands, and bracelets.

Thank you, parents and students, for your dedication to the school-wide SFA Reading Program. Leaders lead, one page at a time.

Doug Poludnjak, English Teacher

Mr. Brian Knobloch, English Teacher

Interview by Hunter Price By Brianne Kenny

1. What college did you attend? I attended Sam Houston State University.

2. Why did you attend this college? This university tailored my needs.

3. Why did you choose Stacey to teach at? I chose Stacey because it had a teaching

opportunity that other schools did not have. Also, this school has unique set of

challenges, and I like to be challenged in different ways.

4. What other job would you choose if it was

not teaching? I can think of no other job that I’d rather be doing than teaching. However, if I had to

pick, I’d pick something that I enjoy as much as teaching. I’m still figuring out that one.

5. What are your expectations of teaching in

the class room? I feel that I have an impact on many students’ futures, and I expect those

students to have success in whatever lies for them outside my classroom.

Thank You Mr. Knobloch for answering all my

questions.

Doug Poludniak is a teacher in the English department at Stacey. He

has been a teacher for 28 years. His favorite subject is English, but he

also enjoys history. These were his two majors in college at Ohio

University. His least favorite subject was math, but he did enjoy

geometry. He has no pets, but has two children, and his favorite season

is spring. His favorite color is green. Mr. “P” loves the mornings

and sunrises, and if he had a superpower, it would be to fly or

grade papers telepathically.

Volunteer need in the media center It seems as though we see new books arrive in the media center almost every week, and this presents a great opportunity for a volunteer who would enjoy helping get those new books ready for check-out. New books come to our media center needing some routine processing: stamping with the LISD information, gently folding back the pages, writing out a processing slip, and sticking on some labels. If this type of short-term, background work appeals to you, please let us know. We could use one or two volunteers for just an hour or two. You can contact Janie (e-mail below) or call the media center at 210-357-5163. A few of the new books available this week:
