The Autumn Show

was the last show

of 2014.

As a gardening

club we have had a very good year

with lot of really nice produce, flowers,

cookery and children’s entries.

We, the Committee, would like to

thank firstly the competitors, for keep-

ing up a very high standard of produce

and cookery, and secondly you, the

public, for supporting the Club.

The last item on the calender for the

club is the Annual General Meeting on

Monday the 27th October at 7.30pm in

the Village Hall, where we will discuss

the order of events for 2015. Please

do come along and take part. You can

also join the Club for the new year on

the night .....still only £1.00!

September started

with another after-

noon at The Fox for a game of skittles &

hot dog lunch. The weather seemed a

bit dull to start with so we had our bingo

and raffle inside, but as the afternoon

wore on the sun came out and we were

able to play skittles in the garden. We

had two winners of £5 each and that

was Audrey and Percy, so well done to

you both.

On 26th we had our fish & chip lunch to

celebrate Frank and Harry's 80th birth-

days. This always goes down well and

there was a cake to follow, baked by

Marilyn, which was enjoyed by all.

Winter is fast approaching, so why not

come along to the Village Hall on a

Friday afternoon 1pm to 4pm and meet

some new friends?. We are a friendly

crowd and it would be nice to see some

new faces.

With the evenings now drawing in,

always leave a light on if you go out and

carry a torch to show you the way.

Take care.

PlayersPlayers

Welcome Back!

Players have been on their summer

break after our fantastic (but exhaust-

ing!) Spring Show 'Half a Sixpence'

directed by Cindy Tuson. Well done to

everyone involved in this challenging

but thoroughly entertaining show.

Looking ever forward, we are now back

with a bang with our pantomime 'The

Little Mermaid' directed by Tonia Watts.

We are starting earlier than usual as we

are not doing an Autumn performance

this year. The cast is now in place and

we are well underway with rehearsals,

working hard to bring the wonders of the

ocean to Temple Ewell. Expect catchy

songs, hilarious dialogue and of course

a little Temple Ewell Players’ Magic.

See you under the sea!

Don’t miss this .......

Seven Ages explores the idea that we go through seven stages in life. From infancy -

through love and wisdom - to growing old disgracefully!

Essentially a comedy - with touching moments in it - Seven Ages premiered at the

Edinburgh Festival ; garnering 5 star reviews and achieving a sell out run. Transferring

to London’s West End, it received a standing ovation on it’s opening and closing nights.

Since then, it has been seen at over 300 venues across the UK and had sell out per-

formances all over the world.

Seven Ages seeks to explore two of the most important questions in life: why am I here?

and what’s important in my life?, whilst simultaneously making you laugh. Whatever

stage of life you’re at, you’ll love this show. Suitable for 6 - 106 year olds.

What the press have said:Tomlinson reminds me of a young RobinWilliams due to the electricity and

enthusiasm he exudes. Definitely one ofthe most enjoyable

feel-good shows around!Parmount Comedy Channel *****

Heartwarming comedy theatre that allthe family can - and certainly will -enjoy.

Evening Standard *****Wonderfully inventive! Refreshingly

honest. Demand a ticket. See him when you can!

Comedy Magazine *****Hilarious! Tomlinson has his audience

laughing uncontrollingly!Whatever your age, see Seven Ages!

Are you looking for a good school?Phone to arrange a visit to Lydden Primary School.

We offer a small rural school with a good team of professionals and well behaved children.Children are good at caring for each other, learning is fun and each child is developed as anindividual. We aim to equip children with essential skills that they can apply throughout theirlife.

OFSTED 2011 confirmed our ability to differentiate learning well for both age and ability.‘Pupils continue to make good progress through the school so that their attainment by the timethey move to secondary school is generally above average’.

‘There is a very positive engagement with parents and carers, with many commenting specifical-ly on how well their child settled and is progressing’.

We have ‘Share a class’ sessions six times a year, where parents are invited in to learn along-side their children.

Simple though they may be, nevertheless how deeply true are the sayings such as

‘We reap what we sow’ and ‘Give and you shall receive’. Quite possibly, and espe-

cially the latter, these truths have their roots in actions from the beginnings of our

human history and the making of sacrifices from the fruits of harvest to ‘Mother

Earth’ to ensure the continuing fertility of the land.

At Harvest time we give thanks to God for the gifts we receive and for those who

work to bring us those good things we need and enjoy. However, thanksgiving

continues to find it’s best expression in the sharing of the gifts we have gratefully

received – in the ‘giving back’ which still rightly mirrors something of those primi-

tive but important actions. In whatever small way we ‘give back’ (Soup kitchen,

Christian Aid, Food Bank or to neighbour) we do our best to turn away from self-

ishness and greed and express above all our gratitude for the blessing of being

able to give.

P.S. As I write, (early for this Newsletter) the Gift Day donations have still to be

opened and counted and are still coming in. However, on Gift Day I was greatly

lifted in spirit by the warmth and generosity of so many. Thank you so very

much. I was also very touched to be given the contents of our Youth Club’s

swear box. A special ‘thank you’ for their wanting to give this to me!

WW1 Commemoration WW1 Commemoration Saturday 23rd AugustSaturday 23rd August

A quiet gathering of villagers

assembled in the afternoon

sunshine by the refurbished

War Memorial, in the St. Peter

& Paul Churchyard. They

joined with many others to

commemorate those who sacri-

ficed their lives, and to remem-

ber those who served, during

World War 1.

Proceedings were led by

Father Paul who was accom-

panied by Colin Smithen,

Chairman of our Parish

Council, who read the names

of the fallen - now so clear

after restoration, and Jenny

Miles gave the reading.

The Air Training Corps 354

Band were in attendance

and provided excellent and

very appropriate WW1

marching music to then

lead the gathering up to

Players’ Corner where

there was a further dedica-

tion service for the new

Garden of Rememberance.

Page 17: Oct 2014 November 2012 - Temple Ewell Newsletter · of 2014. As a gardening club we have had a very good year with lot of really nice produce, flowers, cookery and children’s entries

17

The Players contribution to this service was a lovely ren-

dition of 'Keep the Home Fires Burning...' then this was

followed by an emotional solo performance by Sophia

Lyons of 'Smile'.

The afternoon continued with

some energetic singing and

entertainment by four Pearly

Kings and Queens while the

audience indulged in light

refreshments including 'Trench' cake.......delicious!

To acknowledge the historical Christmas truce foot-

ball match, two energetic teams, manned by local

guys, played a very competitive game with the

teams Yellow and

Pink drawing 8 - 8.

Well done to the

Pink team who won

on Penalties!

The afternoon was very memorable and moving

and both services were appropriately sensitively

and respectfully conducted. Members of The

British Legion lowered the Colour in salute and

played The Last Post and then the Reveille. Just

what was required in rememberance of such a cat-

astrophic event in our country's history.

RUBBISH

If you are like me then an email intake tends to build up because it is not regular-

ly attended to. I am not sure of the capacity before it blows a fuse.

All aspects of our lives involve rubbish as is witnessed by the hordes of us at the

Whitfield disposal site. It is very therapeutic when we throw the worn out and dis-

carded into the skip.

We all have a rubbish intake into our inner lives and this also needs disposal or

its build up can cause damage to our well being. There is a verse in the Bible

which says "Cast all your cares on Jesus because he cares for you".

We met in September after our summer break. Our speaker, Judi

Knight, talked about 'Eking out the Ration', an amusing and thought-provoking

insight into the hardships suffered during WW 2, when lots of foodstuffs were hard

to obtain and women had to stretch their budgets and imaginations to feed their

families. Judi accompanied her talk with a demonstration of two dishes which

would have been served; they were not very appealing at all!

Next meeting October 9th.

KCC and DDC CouncillorKCC and DDC Councillor

Vehicle excise duty was first introduced into the United Kingdomduring 1889, but it was not until 32 years later from the 1stJanuary 1921, did it become compulsory to display a tax disc ona vehicle. These tax discs, also known correctly as vehicle exciselicences, were issued either quarterly or annually and were madeof a paper disc that was unperforated and printed in black on awhite background. In 1923 Britain was introduced to the first of

the coloured tax discs, which were also perforated.

There have been approximately twelve subtly different designs of the disc from1921 to the present day, the most striking change occurring from 1961, when thedesign was radically altered to start a style that is still vaguely similar today. Overthose years many owners of vehicles have been either arrested or summonsedbefore a criminal court for the offences theft of a tax disc, fraudulent use of a taxdisc, which was when a stolen tax disc was exhibited on another vehicle to givethe impression to a passing police officer that that particular vehicle was taxed, when infact it was not, due to it displaying a stolen disc, or when the owner of twoor more vehicles used a tax disc from one vehicle to display on another to evadebuying a disc for the second vehicle.

Many serious crimes have been detected as a result of a stolen or different tax discbeing fraudulently displayed on a vehicle, from an IRA bomber, I believe TheYorkshire Ripper was detained initially due to a different tax disc being displayedon the vehicle he was driving and not that long ago in Lincolnshire, a gang ofLithuanian car thieves, who were stealing good quality cars then 'ringing' them(altering the cars identity). The gang had gone to great lengths to alter engine, chassis and registration plate numbers, carrying out a convincingly professionaljob, only to get caught out by the police because they forgot to alter the registra-tion number displayed on the tax disc. So 93 years after the issue and display ofthe first tax discs, from this October, we will be seeing the final issue of the discthat has been a part of our motoring history.

Oh no, before you start celebrating, you will still have to pay vehicle excise duty, but the perforated disc that has become part of our lives, will not be issued any-more for display on the vehicle.

So how do you know if someone has or has not paid their road tax? You won't. Butif they have not paid, they will, for they will receive a fine through the post. For allvehicle documentation is recorded against individual vehicle files. As you drivearound a town, travel along a motorway, visit a supermarket car park, go to a Port, visit a petrol station or travel through the Dartford Crossing, you will probably notrealise, but your vehicle registration plate will be monitored many times over onyour long or sshort journey by ANPR (automatic number plate reader). Many policecars carry them too. The ANPRs will flag to the authorities automatically if yourvehicle is checked by one of these cameras and your vehicle file held at DVLA

Temple Ewell Bike ClubTemple Ewell Bike Club

On Sunday 13th July (having recovered from a fabulous evening at Lounge on the

Lawn) three of us from the Temple Ewell Bike Club, David Gavin, Chris Barnett and

I, joined Channel Rotary for their annual Romney Marsh Cycle Challenge. Money

was being raised for Kent Air Ambulance and once again over 500 riders took part.

Rides were 10, 30 or 50 miles which ensured that everyone could enjoy a flat ride

through the lanes of South West Kent.

We took the 50 Mile challenge, which was pretty gruelling as there were no hills to

give us any respite from pedalling! However, we three completed in good time with

the most excellent hot dogs at the pub at St Mary's-in-the-Marsh as a welcome

reward! The Military Wives from Shorncliffe Camp were there to entertain the tired

and exhausted throng on what turned out to be excellent weather conditions.

Next on our agenda will hopefully be the annual Kent Churches Bike Ride 13

September.............our highest achieve-

ment being me and Bob Potts visiting 23

churches about 4 years ago...... Now

there's a challenge!!!

Jenny Olpin

discloses you have failed to pay road tax on your car, or your car is declaredSORNed when the camera views/ records of it on a road. Further if you fail to payyour road tax or sorn your vehicle, the DVLA will fine you by post.

You can not transfer road tax upon selling your vehicle, so you may need to con-sider selling your car close to when you car road tax is about to fall due for renew-al.

A final word of advice for those who may live in their holiday home abroad, for afew months of the year and may keep a second car out there permanently, still reg-istered on Uk plates. Some countries, example France, the Police Nationale/Gendarmerie determine whether your car is insured, incorrectly by looking to seeif your tax disc is valid and if not displayed, or, out of date will often impound thevehicle never to be seen again. So if you have a UK registered car that remainspermanently at your holiday home abroad, get it re-registered on the plates for thatcountry so you do not fall foul of the local police and risk losing your vehicle.

Hello Everyone

I am delighted to announce that we

raised a record-breaking £126,500

from this year’s Pilgrims Hospice Cycle

Challenge! This is over £39,500 more

than last year. Thank you so much to

everyone who took part and who

raised sponsorship money for Pilgrims

Hospices.

The weeks following the ride were

often turbulent and I know that many of

you were disappointed with the original

news, so quickly after the ride, that our

beds in the Canterbury Hospice were

being withdrawn. This decision has

been reversed and this huge amount of

money that you have raised is testa-

ment to the strength of your support

and belief in the work that we do.

The team trophy was awarded to a

team duo – Mike Howland and Sam

Giles who raised £4651.

The costs for the Cycle Challenge

were defrayed because of the very

generous support of our sponsors:

Barretts Group (Headline sponsor),

London Array, Kent Construction

Focus Group, Argentis Financial

Services, Ovenden, Move-it Channel

Moving, Noel Tatt and Biketart. We

The date for our 2015 ride has been set

for Sunday 3rd May, so make a note in

your cycling calendar for next year!

Thank you so much to those who sup-

ported Pilgrims Hospices by taking part

in this year’s ride and for making it the

best ever in terms of participant numbers

(nearly 1500) and definitely the best

fundraiser.

I am leaving Pilgrims Hospices to pursue

another fundraising role in a local chari-

ty, but my colleagues,

[email protected] and

[email protected] are

your points of contact in the Canterbury

Fundraising Office going forward.

Very best wishes

Deborah Kellond

Well done all who took part - including

our very own Temple Ewell Bike Club.

Part 1. The Professional Side of You

(Taken from the diary ‘Taking a Complement’ 2002)

What makes a good Complementary Therapist?

I was often asked how could I sit and touch peoples’ feet? and this remark was

usually followed by a grimace.

Or what would I do if a client came with less than clean feet with or without an

odour?

My initial and stock reply to the first question was ‘Why not? Feet are part of one’s

anatomy so what is the difference between touching feet or touching someone’s

shoulder to comfort?’ The second question? Well, I never experienced this situa-

tion. My guess would have to be to dig deep into the bag of diplomacy and tact.

Then did the situation you faced depend on whether the client drew attention to it?

You couldn’t, either way, put on a mask and/or gloves, the latter because a reflex-

ologist needs their finger-tips to read the presented feet and how would you feel if

a reflexologist did that to you?

There may be a valid reason for the odour,

the type of smell could depend on a dia-

betic condition, therefore a client with that

condition may feel unwell on that day and

certainly not feel well enough to wash feet.

Depression also has a part to play –

depression equals lethargy and lassitude –

it can mean not bothering to wash generally as energy levels are too low to carry

out the very act of washing. The spiral begins.

A lot of questions to ask yourself in a matter of minutes before making the decision

whether to kindly suggest to the client they wash their feet whilst you washed your

hands (how much easier and tactful then to have in your equipment box , a nice

pack of cleaning wipes and tea tree oil?) whilst gently massaging their feet prior to

and during the treatment. Comfort and sparing the

client embarrassment. The odour could be due to

Athletes Foot. A fungal, skin or nail, infection?

Professionalism dictates your suggesting the treat-

ment being delayed until this client had consulted their

GP or Chiropodist.
