OASD—Oconomowoc Area School District
March 2016
Dear Parents,
We are so thrilled that March is Nation-al Reading Month. At Ixonia, reading is our top priority each day -- this month we get to celebrate it as an entire school! National Reading Month ties in very well with our March PBIS theme teaching and reminding our students that their most important job at Ixonia School is to learn. “Read, Learn, Grow” is a lifelong mission we hope to instill in our students. The teachers at Ixonia School are continually reading, learn-ing, and growing in their understanding about different ways to excite, moti-vate, and connect with all types of learners.
In my 7 months at Ixonia School, these are ways I have seen reading as a top priority:
Teachers make uninterrupted time for students to read and share about their reading.
There is abundant access to text around our school, both in the school library, but also in their classroom libraries, making all types of books ac-cessible all day long.
We discuss the power that read-ing has in their lives .
Staff model the joy of reading eve-ry day. Our teachers LOVE BOOKS -- KNOW BOOKS -- SHARE BOOKS.
Though standardized test scores are one way we assess reading progress, the ex-citement of reading is a beautiful testa-ment to the growth of students as read-ers. That’s what inspires us each day!
In the spirit of March madness, we strongly encourage all students in grades 4K-4th grade to just READ as much as they can. Any minutes can count to-ward reaching our collective goal of 18,000 minutes for the month of March. Help support our excitement of National Reading Month at home with our weekly reading challenge. Your kids are most inspired by their loved ones who care about them every day -- experience the power of reading in your house!

Being Kind in Words and Actions
In February, students worked very hard to fill
up the giant heart on our school bulletin board.
Each “feather” earned represents a student who
was caught “being kind in words and actions.”
Congratulations Ixonia Falcons—who
collected a grand total of 1,198 feathers!
March PBIS Focus: Read, Learn, Grow!

Feed The Dream Food Drive
Thank you Ixonia 1st graders for organizing this year’s very successful
food drive to support the Ixonia Food Pantry.—and thank you to every
family who donated food items. More than $400 worth of food was
donated! Just take a look at all the good we’re doing!

Feedback Requested!
Sodexo would love the opportunity to improve its food service program. As im-provement is driven by customer feedback, we are asking that you complete this short survey on how the district can improve the food service experience for your student. Please click here to take the short survey.
We would appreciate your response by March 11, 2016.
Future Chef’s Competition Finalist!
CONGRATULATIONS SOPHIA FOSS
On being selected to represent
Ixonia Elementary School In the future chef’s recipe
competition presented by Sodexo.
More than 100 students from across the school
district entered a recipe for their favorite breakfast
food. Sophia from Mrs. Theisen’s 4th grade was selected to participate in a
culinary competition cook off—coming up in March at OHS.

Jump Rope For Heart
Congratulations to all of the students who participated in Ixonia’s
Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser! In total, our school raised a whopping
$5,859.89 for the American Heart Association!
Our top earners were:
Aralyn Hagie in 5K
Colson Bresnehan in 1st grade
Hunter Mentch in 2nd grade
Jacob Smith in 3rd grade
Anna Seefeldt in 4th grade
Jacob was our school’s top earner—and his reward?
Smashing a pie into Mrs. Yearling’s face!
Creative Arts Workshop
Four Ixonia 4th graders and two Ixonia 3rd graders have
been selected to Represent the school at Oconomowoc’s
first ever Creative Arts Workshop. The event takes places at OHS on
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016.
Eva Halaska, Luella Pasternak, Elias Dietmeyer, Maycee Rodenkirch,
Connor Scaff and Laurel Fox will take part in a gallery walk of the IB art
show, where they will be inspired to produce a written piece that will be
published in book form. Each will receive a copy of the published book!
Congratulations to Ixonia’s creative writers!

Birthdays!
At Ixonia, we love to celebrate birthdays! On your child’s birth-
day—or half birthday—we announce their name on the loud speak-
er and give them a little gift. If you bring in a treat, please make
sure it is peanut/tree nut free. Thank you!
Snack time!
Ixonia students have the
opportunity to enjoy a healthy
snack at least once every
school day.
Please make sure you are
sending snacks with your
child.
It seems many of our
students, especially our 4th
graders, are not bringing
snacks from home and are
instead, relying on the
classroom supply.
Fruits, vegetables, crackers
and other peanut free items
make excellent snack choices.
Thank you!
Notes for the office:
If your child will be leaving school before
3:40 it is important to let both their teacher
and the office know about your plans.
Informing both the classroom teacher and
Mrs. Hunter in the office will help make
sure your student is ready to go when you
need them. You can send two notes—one
for the teacher, one for the office or add
the office to your email…

Ixonia Post Office Meet and Greet
A very special Thank You to the Millers
for generously donating a popcorn snack
for our meet and greet… it was delicious!
Ixonia students had a great time writing letters
to their pen pals, loved ones and school staff!
Every day they spent time learning to write let-
ters, address envelopes and deliver the inter-
school mail.
Thank you to all of the
families who participat-
ed and made this time
at Ixonia so special!
It’s fun to receive and
send mail!
