THE MARINE DETECTIVES RESEARCH. Eva, Ella, Adi, Matthew and Gurleen

1.How are sea creatures affected by rubbish?

Animals swallow plastic, which can suffocate them or give them an artificial sense of being full, leading eventually to starvation. Fish and birds get caught up in plastic can drown, or starve or become easy prey to bigger creatures. Plastic can break down into tiny particles which are eaten by smallest species and past up the food chain. Birds and many other creatures can mistaken plastic, cans, fishing nets and much more for a tasty treat.

2. How does trash affect plants in the ocean?

Coral needs clean clear water to survive. Algae is a big threat to plants because it covers the plants (in the ocean) is oil spills just a drop of oil can affect the plants major time. When sediment and other pollutants enter the water.

THE POLLUTION PREVENTERS Kiranpreet, Melinda,Arthur, Angel, Emmanuel,

Sebastian 1.How do fishing boats

and fisher men affect the ocean?

Lost fishing hooks can kill marine life. Overfishing can lead species of fish to extinction. Five out of eight tuna species are at risk of extinction. Many boats have under water exhaust that pollute the ocean. Sometimes the boat engine can spill oil or fuel. Tank cleaners throw away plastics etc over the side. Sometimes people dump oil and fuel over the side.

2.What is the the role of drains polluting the ocean?

Fertilizers, pesticides, street litter, sediment, automotive, fluids, and pet waste can pollute water hundreds of miles downstream from their source.

miFertilizers, pesticides, street litter, sediment, automotive, fluids, and pet waste can pollute water hundreds of miles downstream from their source. They drain rainwater and snowmelt off the streets to prevent flooding. Water entering storm drains is usually directly into the nearest waterway untreated sent. Most of the plastic usually reaches the ocean via stormwater drains. Rubbish that is thrown onto the rain and rubbish travels through the drains and ends up in the ocean. A single quart of oil can contaminate two million gallons of drinking water or create an oil slick that covers eight acres.

What can we do to prevent trash from reaching the ocean

1.Reduce your rubbish. Studies have shown that about 80 % of marine pollution comes from the land. One of the main ways to reduce marine pollution is to get rid of rubbish carefully wherever we are.2.It’s called a beach clean up. Beach clean – ups. Beach clean-ups are doing great things to reduce marine pollution.3.Make sure only rain goes down the drain. One way rubbish from the land makes it into our oceans is through storm water drain. Unfortunately anything collected by the rainwater as it travels across the road and down the gutters – like cigarette but oil from cars and other bits of rubbish – also goes into the storm water drains.

What programs have been put in place to stop our oceans from being polluted?

The beach clean up is a way to stop letting sea creatures eat plastic. Date for beach clean:16 July 2016 Every 3rd Saturday of each month 10.am to 10.30am is a beach clean up for people that want to save the ocean.Organizing a beach clean up, here are the steps.Where and when are you doing itInclude lots of people to clean up the beach.Get all the people and count them up and put them in groups.Get big rubbish bags and put rubbish in it instead of using little white plastic bags.

pacific garbage patch?

The bottom of the north pacific

ocean is filled of rubbish. It creates a little spin that travels from the west cost of north America to Japan. The great pacific garbage patch is a collection of marine debris in the north pacific ocean.

2.How does plastic (rubbish) get in the ocean?

Drains- The rain and rubbish travels through the drains and ends up into the ocean.Boats and Ships- During extreme storms at sea, contains on large shipping Vessels can fall over board and their content spill straight into the ocean.Land- The waves and the tides can then take the rubbish and sweep it into the ocean.Factory- The waste that escapes from the factories make an easy and very short journey to the ocean.
