Dangerous situation

Back in the streets, theclashes raged for nearlyeight hours, with

numerous reports of teargas, flash-banggrenades, rubber bulletsand bean bag projectiles.Al Jazeera cannotindependently verify thepolice use of all of theseweapons. Oakland PoliceDepartmentʼs crowdcontrol policy says thatthe type of bean bags

activists say were used onTuesday "shall not be used for crowd management, crowd control or crowd dispersalduring demonstrations".

One video from Tuesday evening, from a local Fox news affiliate, shows a group ofprotesters being hit by what appears to be tear gas. As people began to regroup and tryto carry away a woman who appeared to have been knocked unconscious, police fireda concussion grenade into the group. An activist who was at the scene explained whathappened: “She was already lying on the ground bleeding, and I watched a flash-banggrenade land right next to her head and explode right next to her face."

Kristin, a protester and graduate student who asked to be identified only by her firstname, told Al Jazeera that the situation in Oaklandʼs streets became increasinglydangerous.

"At one point, the police cut all of the city lights on that intersection and then startedlaunching tear gas canisters and concussion grenades and shooting rubber bullets,” shesaid.

Soon after, she said, "A group of people were being treated by medics for woundsinflicted by police. It hadnʼt been long since the last round of tear gas, and then the copslaunched another round and people started running and tripping over each other and

the people who were getting treated."

According to Lily Haskell, the protest that had planned to create a permanentencampment in the city centre has now evolved: “The protest, more broadly speaking, isabout showing that this is a peaceful movement of people and that weʼre not going totolerate police repression in our city."

Protesters reportedly left the city centre by about midnight, but Occupy Oaklandorganisers put an online social networking call for further protests “tomorrow at 6pm forround three. and four. and five. and six. We will not be moved.”

As the city's air clears of tear gas, unless police drastically change their tact, there is

reason to expect at least another heated night in the city of 400,000.
