also well attended last night The number of people in town who feel like they cant get along without the open air theater is increasing Mrs W H Dodge has returned home from Davinson College where she went to be present nt the grad- uation ¬ of her two sons Witnerspoon and Richard The Messrs Dodge will visit relatives in South Caroline and Jacksonville before returning home i j j I THE EAGLES MINSTRELS I Recently the Ocala Eagles decided I to go into the amateur minstrelsy for pleasure and profit They commenced in a businesslike way and ordered I uch paraphernalia as they would I need including some very handsome costumes An organization was then formed and much of the very best musical and minstrel talent of the city was taken into the organization- and the personnel of the Eagles Min- strel ¬ I is musical to a man The minstrels then began to re- hearse ¬ I and practice frequently and when it was definitely decided to op3n the tour that they propose to make of Central Florida with a performance in Uunnellon last night daily rehearsals were put on j It takes much time and a mountain of patience to knock a minstrel show into presentable shape and no matter Low much practice and rehearsing it tnk s the first night to tell what the show really isto cut out its bad I features and improve on and better- its good ones after which few re- marks j We will take up the first night Dunnellon The Eagles thought they had made I arrangements for a special train on the A C L to DunnelFon to leave 1 here at 6 oclock and return last nleht j after the shows but after the regular j tnin hall gone they learned that the price of such special would be 100 i instead of 67 as they understood j Finally however when it was found I there was no other recourse the boys paid thf money and took their train and with outside persons to the num I Ur of Cl altogether went lawn mak- ing ¬ I the run in an hour Among the I la div who accompanied the boys I were Mrs AVellie Mrs Deveneau Mrs Walter Pedrick anti stetor Miss Mll- dred I Sunnier and her guest Mrs Will Moore and Miss Morris Those outside- the I members of the minstrel were i charged the regular round trip fare and on the return trip there were a I dozen other p Iasngcr and this theI ¬ I ed a little on the expense of the train I The boys ntsembled at the opera I house to god the lay of the land though I no attempt was made at a rehearsal They soon saw that there was scarce- ly ¬ room for them all to turn aroun- dn the little stage and that it would- be suffocating work as the evening was uncomfortably warm I Mr Will Goher the city clerk met I tho boys and stayed with them and gave them much valuable assistance I and Mr Harry Peter was a host with- in ¬ himself and greatly added in mak- ing ¬ i the show a success I The crowd began to arrive at S30 I antI the curtain went up at 9 and from I that time to the close that curtain I was always doing stunts to worry the I boys or crack their heads and add to the other inconveniences of the little cubby of a stage The h6use was packed all the chairs were brought In that the hat would hold and in the I I rear the ciowd Wood up clear back to I the dovr- TIi i i > opening chorus was simply tiny I t and made as good an impression as most of time professional minstrel en- sembles ¬ I The boys looked welt in their costumes antI makeup and j the singing was firstclass The first half of the show ran as smooth as could have been wished for without a hitch and the songs jokes and black I faced end mens work was right up lo I now We do not mean by this that I I time balance of the how was not good for it was it was all good There ifre I a few little places in the latter half whore impiovements can be made and will be remedied and strengthened at once The quartet Mcsjrs Simpson cur- ler Morris and Barnes cant be beat and were heartily applauded having I to respond to the second encore The j solos by Messrs Darnes Simpson I Morris Schrieber and Cordero were all well rendered numbers and elicited much applause Mr H W Tuckers cornet solo accompanied by Miss Sumner on tilt piano was beautifully ndered and most highly appreciated by till audience I The blackfaee or end men Messrs Martinet Moore Strowman McWili 1 jams Devenau antI Morris all did well and kept the audience highly amused with their rich makeups new jokes antI lively ba dinage- Mr All Owen the interlocuter un- derstands ¬ the business and handled- his part admirably It is hard to ruf lie Alf or disturb the even tenor of his way but both were effectively done last night when an usher rushed up- I to the stage with a bunch of collards as long as a mule and tied with ellow cheesecloth for ribbon From the rear of the house one could see the blush on Alfs cheeks rise supreme to time paint but he accepted the boka gracefully and sat down till one if the bones relieved him of his bu den The token was one of esteem from M George MacKay who veu down on the afternoon train and av- iansed for the joke on Alf while at itthe depot Mr Owen said he know Mr MacKay had something up his sleeve but he did not know in what guise until the surprise was sprung The bokay is on exhibition at Mc her MacKays today The boys have no fault to find with their opening house The place wouid not have held any more and it is very doubtful if an amateur minstrel troupe could ever put on a better show with TF 4 wt 5 I A di 496 The Proof is in the BREAD- If you are not using it now its a good time to begin We sell it exclusively in Ocala MARTIN CARN V d n i b r A- TTEAPOT t GROCERY the stage they were to show from Given a good opera house with room and ventilation so that they will not be roasted the Eagles minstrels will give a show that will be a credit- to themselves and most highly pleas ¬ ing to the audience The minstrels are going to Gaines- ville ¬ Monday where they will show- in the new Baird opera house and tho show will be in many respects better i and stronger than on the first appear ¬ ance and we predict they will make a big hit in our sister city One Improvement that will be made which will be of vast benefit to the minstrel will be the placing of the entire management of the organization under one head who will appoint as ¬ I sistants to do certain tHings and his orders and instructions will be Im j plicitly obeyed ho being held respon- sible j for the THE EAGLES MINSTRELSI

Recently the Ocala Eagles decidedI to go into the amateur minstrelsy forpleasure and profit They commencedin a businesslike way and orderedI

uch paraphernalia as they wouldI need including some very handsomecostumes An organization was thenformed and much of the very bestmusical and minstrel talent of thecity was taken into the organization-and the personnel of the Eagles Min-strel

¬

I is musical to a manThe minstrels then began to re-

hearse¬

I and practice frequently andwhen it was definitely decided to op3nthe tour that they propose to make ofCentral Florida with a performance inUunnellon last night daily rehearsalswere put onj

It takes much time and a mountainof patience to knock a minstrel showinto presentable shape and no matterLow much practice and rehearsing ittnk s the first night to tell whatthe show really isto cut out its bad

marksj We will take up the first nightDunnellon

The Eagles thought they had madeI arrangements for a special train onthe A C L to DunnelFon to leave

1 here at 6 oclock and return last nlehtj after the shows but after the regularj tnin hall gone they learned that the

price of such special would be 100i instead of 67 as they understoodj Finally however when it was foundI there was no other recourse the boys

paid thf money and took their trainand with outside persons to the num

house to god the lay of the land though I

no attempt was made at a rehearsalThey soon saw that there was scarce-ly

¬

room for them all to turn aroun-dn the little stage and that it would-be suffocating work as the eveningwas uncomfortably warm

I

Mr Will Goher the city clerk metI tho boys and stayed with them andgave them much valuable assistance

I and Mr Harry Peter was a host with-in

¬

himself and greatly added in mak-ing

was always doing stunts to worry theI
