Objective Understand what happens when a substance changes state. Summary A substance's state is dependent on its temperature. Water is a substance that can exist as a solid, a liquid or a gas. When a gas is cooled below its boiling point it condenses to form a liquid. When a liquid is cooled below its melting point it freezes to form a solid.
flash/flash6/XML/WATLCtx.xml
3 Q1. What is the melting point of water? A. 100 C B. -1 C C. 0 C Here is a hint: the boiling point of water is 100 C. Here is a hint: the boiling point of water is 100 C. Correct! This is also called its freezing point. Well done - now try Question 2. 1 Q2. What is the opposite of condensing? A. Evaporating B. Melting C. Freezing Correct! Condensing is when a gas changes into a liquid. Here is a hint: evaporating is when a liquid changes into a gas. Here is a hint: evaporating is when a liquid changes into a gas.
flash/flash6/XML/WATLCx.xml
Some substances exist naturally in all three states - solid, liquid and gas. Under normal conditions, whether something appears as a solid, liquid or a gas depends on its temperature. For example, water freezes when its temperature falls to, or below, 0 degrees Celsius. This temperature is the freezing point of water. Above 100 degrees Celsius, water exists as a gas, steam. This is its boiling point. Between these two temperatures water is a liquid. So water has a freezing point of zero degrees Celsius and a boiling point of one hundred degrees Celsius. Solid Liquid Gas Solid Liquid Gas Freezing point

Objective Understand what happens, in terms of energy and particle movement, when a substance changes state. Summary Melting is when a solid is heated and it changes into a liquid. The particles gain energy and vibrate faster until they can move out of their rigid structure. This occurs at a temperature called the melting point. Evaporation is when a liquid is heated and it turns into a gas. The particles gain enough energy to move apart completely. It occurs at a temperature called the boiling point.

3 Q1. Which type of particles have the most energy? A. Particles in a solid B. Particles in a liquid C. Particles in a gas Here is a hint: what would you do to change a solid to a liquid and a liquid to a gas? Here is a hint: what would you do to change a solid to a liquid and a liquid to a gas? Correct! Gas particles have lots of energy, that's why they can move around very fast. Well done - now try Question 2. 3 Q2. What happens to the particles in a solid when it is heated? A. They move around faster. B. They move more slowly. C. They vibrate faster. Here is a hint: particles in a solid can only vibrate, they can't move around freely. Here is a hint: particles in a solid can only vibrate, they can't move around freely. Correct! As they gain energy they vibrate faster.
flash/flash4/XML/MBPLCx.xml
When a solid is heated, the particles gain energy and vibrate faster and the temperature rises. The more the solid is heated, the more violently the particles vibrate. The temperature continues to rise. At the melting point, the temperature remains the same. This is because the energy being supplied is being used to overcome the forces holding the particles together, freeing them from their solid structure. If you continue to heat the liquid, the particles move around faster and faster and the temperature rises. Some particles gain enough energy to overcome attractive forces and escape from the liquid to become a gas. This is evaporation. When the temperature is higher, more particles have enough energy to escape so evaporation is faster. When the temperature is high enough, the liquid will boil. The temperature at which a liquid boils is called its boiling point. When the liquid is boiling the temperature stays the same even though heat energy is still being supplied. This energy is being used to separate the liquid particles from each other.
