in Livingstone (Zambia)
By Sory Diallo
Objective 3: Enchance cowpea productivity and production in drought-prone areas of sub-Saharan Africa 2016
Global objectives Development of varieties resistant to biotics (diseases and pests) and abiotics(drought and heat) using conventional and biotechnoly breedig tools; Capacity building (human ressources and infrastructure); 2
Activity 3.2. NARS partneirs using improved cowpea breeding lines for developing better vareties
3.2.1. At least 30 drought tolerant breeding lines developed using MAGIC populations
3.2.2. At least 10 low-P tolerant breeding lines developed using MARS.
3.2.3. At least 30 breeding lines with aphid, Striga,
and bacterial blight resistance developed using MABC.
3.2.1. At least 30 drought tolerant breeding lines developed using MAGIC populations
On station Trial in 2016
10-15 Early maturing line resistant to Striga will be tested at Cinzana Research Station
10-15 Medium maturing lines résistant to Striga will be tested at Cinzana Research Station
Field experiment will be conducted at Cinzana Research Station in 2016. The randomized complete block experimental design with four replications will be used. The plot size for each variety of the experiment will be 4 lines of 4 m. The varieties will be planted in a distance of 0,75 m between row and 0,30m between plant.
3.2.2. At least 10 low-P tolerant breeding lines developed using MARS.
On station Trial in 2016
10-15 Early maturing line resistant to Striga will be tested at Cinzana Research Station
10-15 Medium maturing lines résistant to Striga will be tetsted at Cinzana Research Station
3.2.3.At least 30 breeding lines with Striga, resistance developed using MABC.
3.2.3.1. Identify contrasting pairs of parents (released susceptible line and source of resistance) for each trait for each country
Recurrent parent : Hawaba, Suvita2,
Resistant parent: IT97K- 499-35 (Hope)
3.2.3.2 Hybridization, advancement of segregating populations and selection. Generate F1, BC1-BC3 following MABC scheme for aphid, striga and bacterial blight resistance in IER
In 2016 off season
• On-station crossing in the screen house
Hawaba (Female Parent)
Suvita 2 (Female Parent)
IT89KD-499-35 (Male Parent)
This activity will be carried out in the screen house as follows: Pots for each parent will be
set up in two lines of ten pots each (one line of recurrent parent and one line of donor
parents). The plastic pots of diameter 14.5 cm and 17.5 cm deep were used. The pots were
filled with sand. The inoculated pots were watered for a week, after which the cowpea seeds
were sowed. Each recurrent parent has been sown beside his donor in order to facilitate the
crossing process. Only F1 plants exempt of Striga have been crossed to the recurrent
parents and also all pods from crosses with F1 plants susceptible will be systematically
eliminated.

Research Station
Activity 3.3. Testing for Release- NARS partners regularly releasing superior cowpea cultivars
On station Trial in 2016
10-15 Early maturing line resistant to Striga will be tested at Cinzana and Koporo research Station
10-15 Medium maturing lines résistant to Striga will be tetsted at Cinzana and Koporo research Station
10-15 dual purpose maturing lines résistant to Striga will be tested at Cinzana and Koporo research Station
Field experiment will be conducted at Segou and Mopti région in 2016. The randomized complete block experimental design with four replications will be used. The plot size for each variety of the experiment will be 4 lines of 4 m. The varieties will be planted in a distance of 0,75 m between row and 0,30m between plant.
FPVS trials conducted with 200 participants, and no
less than 60 women in 2016
10 Early maturing lines will be tested in FPVS trials at 5 locations in each region (Ségou and Mopti)
10 Medium maturing lines will be tested in FPVS trials at 5 locations in each region (Ségou and Mopti)
10 dual purpose maturing lines will will be tested in FPVS trials at 5 locations in each region (Ségou and Mopti)
Five to ten new varieties identified for promotion to on-farm evaluations.
On Farm trials in 2016
5 promising early maturing lines resistant to Striga will be tested in on farm trial at Cinzana and Koporo
5 promising medium maturing lines resistant to Striga will be tested in on farm trial at Cinzana and Koporo
The experimental design will be a complete bloc. Each farmer represents one replication. 10 farmers at Ségou and 10 farmers at Mopti will be chosen to conduct each On-farm trial. The plot size for each variety of the experiment will be 6 lines of 6m. These varieties will be planted in a distance of 0,75 m between row and 0,30 m between plant.
Nutrition profiling of all candidate release varieties by NARS to ensure nutritional status equal to or better than available standards
5 released varieties will be accessed for nutritional profiling.
Criteria
Protein content
Digestibility

This activity will be done by Processing Technology laboratory at Sotuba Research Station
Activity 3.4. Best Bet Varieties-Farmers using improved cowpea cultivars and ICM practices and realizing higher yields
On Farm tests in 2016
3 promising early maturing lines resistant to Striga will be tested at Ségou and Mopti region.
3 promising medium maturing lines resistant to Striga will be tested at Ségou and Mopti région.
The experimental design will be a complete bloc. Each farmer represents one replication. 20 farmers at Ségou and 20 at Mopti région will conducted each On-farm test. Seed multiplication of release varieties in 2016
2,000 kg breeder seed of released varieties will be produce in 2016.
Superficies: 3 Ha ( 1 ha at Koporo and 2 ha at Cinzana)
Varieties: Acar 1, CZ06-4-16, CZ06-1-12, CZ06-2-17 and CZ06-1-05
Capacity building (human ressources and infrastructure);
Mr. Youssouf DIARRA has been nominated for MASTER.
There is a great need to reinforce the capacity of irrigation of our station. The cost of the activities conducted during the Off-season in Niono Research Station is higher. The other possibility is to conduct all activities at Sotuba. The distance is great and the cost of local travel will be higher.
