M a t t h e w W e s t , a 38-year-old Frenchtown Township resident, has a long history with scouting programs.

An Eagle Scout, he also is the leader of Pack 597 in Newport. His son also is involved in the organiza-tion – he is transitioning from a Cub Scout pack to Scout troop.

He said the money used to fund local groups’ activities is generated through area volunteers and families.

“Our funding is through our volunteers and par-ents,” West said. “We retain our own treasury and operate our own budget.”

His group has about 40 kids who are fairly active

in the local organization. He’s seen shifting trends in membership, though he points to athletic programs being scouting programs’ main competitor, par-ticularly during warmer months.

“Membership ebbs and flows,” West said. “Sporting programs are something we try to live in harmony with.”

As for the future, West doesn’t anticipate the need for scouting programs to diminish. While BSA reorganizes and regains its footing, he still looks to the positive impact he’s seen in youths who’ve gone through the program.

“(Scouting) can take youths that are fairly timid … and try to give that con-fidence to them that they might not get from other places in life,” West said. “It’s a confidence builder; it’s a program that high-lights character.”
