DOT REPORT

by Nancy Kay, DVM Some of us take the phrase, “dog days of summer” quite literally- we want to go everywhere accompanied by our beloved dogs! Know that the heat of summer has the potential to be hazardous to your dog’s health. Without significant forethought and planning to accommodate higher temperatures, it’s easy for even the healthiest of dogs to become dehydrated, and dehy-dration can be a precursor to deadly heatstroke.

What exactly is dehydration? Dehydration refers to a shortage of water within the body. Do you know that approximately 80% of your dog’s body mass is comprised of water? Given its ubiquitous nature, it’s easy to understand why having an ade-quate amount of water within the body is essential for maintaining normal blood pressure, circulation, and bodily functions. Causes of dehydration Dehydration results when too little water is consumed in relationship to the amount lost from the body. For example, a dog who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea and doesn’t feel good enough to drink lots of water to make up for these fluid losses can readily become dehydrated. Kidney failure can cause dehydration because the damaged kidneys produce abundant urine regardless of how little water is consumed. Summertime heat promotes dehydration, particularly when a dog isn’t in-terested in or doesn’t have access to drinking lots of water. Think about the tennis ball obsessed dog who doesn’t like to interrupt a good game of fetch in order to gulp down some water. Whereas this may not be a prob-lem in cooler temperatures, water loss associated with heavy summertime panting can quickly result in a fluid deficit. Detecting dehydration Dehydration causes a variety of symptoms and dogs may demonstrate from one to all of them. Symptoms include: lethargy, weakness, labored breathing, elevated heart rate, and dry and sticky feeling gums (normal gums are slick and smooth to the touch). If you suspect your dog may be suffering from dehydration, do your best to find some shade or an air con-ditioned environment and encourage drinking. If the symptoms don’t im-prove within a short time period (five minutes at most), it’s time to seek out emergency veterinary care. Preventing dehydration Here are some pointers to keep your favorite Fido well hydrated this sum-mer: Exercise your dog early in the early morning or evening hours to avoid the most intense heat of the day.. Be sure to take along water and a water bowl (one that is familiar to your dog) wherever you go. Don’t rely on natural water sources being available Allow for plenty of rest and wa-ter breaks during play activity and exercise. Your dog may not know his or her limits and will continue to enthusiastically chase the Frisbee long after it’s time to slow down. Provide water access frequently. When out in the heat, be sure to provide a water stop (for you and your dog) at least once every 15 to 20 minutes. If your dog is preoccupied with something else (other dogs, a tennis ball, etc) or too excited to drink, best to cut your out-ing short for the sake of preventing dehydration. As much as you love for your dog to go where you go, be reminded that, when temperatures are soaring, your dog’s well being may best served by being left at home.

MDTC ANNUAL CLUB PICNIC

Our annual Summer Picnic will be held on July 23rd beginning at 11:00 am, at

the outdoor Clubhouse for you and your families to enjoy. Humans only, please

leave your pups at home. The club will be providing the main dish, hamburgers,

along with soda and water. We are asking everyone to please bring a small dish

or dessert to pass. If anyone has fun outdoor games, please feel free to bring

them along. Hope to see everyone there!

What a successful show we had! Even with a large entry, the show ran super smooth thanks to our hard working stewards. Both judges gave compliments on how efficient and good they were. They were very happy. We also got compliments from several exhibitors who were pleased with the show (and the judges). Our judges were Dianne Allen and Barbara Wedekind Selton. I would like to thank a number of folks for their hard work. Without you, this show would not be possible. Big thank you’s to: Daryl Ann Stuppan, who did the bulk of the hard work for this show including getting all our workers, sponsorships, and hosting the raffle basket/award making party. Committee members Ellen Mack, Kathleen McNerney, Dale Eastman and Nancy Eastman. Thanks to Martha Ryan who picked up our judge on Friday from the airport and took her to her hotel. Set up workers Claude Szpot, Tori Baldwin, Mari Pavleje, Karen Michalski and my husband Jim (couldn’t have done it without him). Kitchen crew of Mari Pavleje, Karen Michalski, Dale Eastman and Chris Cowles. Raffle: Khoua Yang, Ellen Mack, Daryl Ann Stuppan, Dale Eastman and Nancy Eastman. Basket making: Daryl Ann, Kristina Stuppan, Kayla Terpstra, Ellen Mack, Kathleen McNerney, Kathy Szpot, Kim Rinzel, Tori Baldwin and Stephanie Bednar. Nancy Eastman made pens for our judges’ gifts and the judges were thrilled! Our show stewards: Barb Wilson, Chris Niver, Karen Michalski, Daryl Ann Stuppan, David and Martha Ryan, Kathleen McNerney, Charlie Mundt, Molly Hare, Ellen Mack, Jean Anderson, Dawn Butler, Kayla Terpstra and Diana Howland. Day of show coordinators: Linda Roman and Kathy Gibowski. Raffle workers: Nancy Eastman, Kathy Szpot, and Ginny Mundt. And our trial secretary Joan Kaml. Clean up: Daryl Ann, Ellen Mack, David and Martha Ryan, Chris Niver, Molly Hare, Nancy Eastman and Linda Ro-man. I hope I did not miss anyone. Without you folks taking the time to work at our show, this would not be possible. I saw folks stewarding for two days...Thank you. I hope you all had fun and learned a lot. We had two very nice judges to work with which makes the job easier. On a financial note, our show had a net profit of $2311.89. That is great news!!

JUNE EXHIBITIONS

June was a very busy month for us. We had two demonstrations and two events where we had a booth to promote MDTC. The first event was West Allis A La Carte on June 4th where we had a booth to answer questions and hand out information. We also took along the Plinko game that Dale and Nancy Eastman made for the club. Thanks to the following people and their dogs who spent some in the booth during the course of the day: Dale and Nancy and Cassidy, Charlie and Ginny Mundt and Wally, Jennie and Verne Neumann and Archer and Lana, Nancy Wandersee and Boots, and Dale Zauskas and Tucker. Our first exhibition in June was a return trip to the Hales Corners Library on June 21st. We've been part of the library's summer reading program several times over the years, and it's been a popular demo for our members to do. This year, we had an audience of over 120 people for our demo. Thank you to Sue Bron-son and Chela, Dawn Butler and Sapphire, Evan Emmons and Maggie, Sam Emmons and Ember, Paul McGivern and Bree, Jennie Neumann and Archer, and Jackie Paisley and Riley for participating. As in the past, the library made a $75 donation to the club for the demo. We thank them for that! The next day we did a demo at Oak Park Place in Wauwatosa. We had already done one there this year, and the seniors liked it so much, they invited us back. Thank you to the following people for being part of the demo: Evan Emmons and Maggie, Sam Emmons and Ember, Kristina Kaszubowski and Rocky, Sagalle Sand and Riley, Dorothy Schmidt and Ellie and Thyme, Melissa Tempel and Frankie, Kayla Terp-stra and Strider, and Dale Zauskas and Tucker. It was great to see new people and dogs at these two demos: Paul and Bree, Jennie and Archer, Kristina and Rocky, Sagalle and Riley, Melissa and Frankie, and Dale and Tucker. Everybody did a good job and had a good time, I think. Hopefully, that can encourage more of you to join us for our next exhibition, whenever it is! Last but not least, Pet World in Menomonee Falls had a pet information day at the store on June 25th which we participated in. Thank you to Dale Eastman who joined me to answer questions and hand out brochures. Our next big event is the State Fair. On Friday, August 11th, MDTC will be the featured group at the K-9 Sports Arena. We'll be doing two demos, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We still need some more dogs for the demos and to spend time in the booth. There's a sign-up sheet in the clubhouse with more details or you can contact me in person at the club or by phone (414 -545-2733) if you have any questions.

MDTC AT FROMM PETFEST

Milwaukee’s four-legged festival will be back this fall for another barkin’ good time. The 4th Annual Fromm Petfest will be held on September 23rd, 2017 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at Henry Maier Festi-val Park. Fromm Family Foods, in partnership with Milwaukee World Festival, Inc., organization that produces Sum-merfest, will once again bring Petfest to Milwaukee’s lakefront at Henry Maier Festival Park. Last year’s event attracted over 10,000 people and their pets for a day of fur and frolic. Thanks to the success of Petfest and the enthusiastic families and pet owners who attend each year, 2017 will be even bigger with new vendors, attractions and activities to suit animal lovers of all ages. With even more event space this year, Fromm Petfest will be jam-packed with furry fun. Guests and their

pets can participate in a number of attractions, including dock diving, agility and lure courses, a doggie

dash, dog park and bier garden, and the popular pet costume contest. Other much-loved activities include

main stage pet entertainment, a shopping marketplace, food and Adoption Avenue, where dozens of non-

profits will showcase rescues looking for a forever home.
