Shriners Hospitals for Children. Available for free on the App Store and Google Play, 'SpineScreen' detects curves as the cell phone is moved along a child’s back, giving parents a quick, informal way to regularly monitor their child’s spine.

In determining how to provide effective and meaningful help to Shriners and Masons in the areas of Texas that suffered damage, Shriners International, Shrine leaders in Texas and the Grand Lodge of Texas have determined that the best and most effective way to provide financial assistance to Texas Masons and Shriners is to use the charitable arm of the Masonic Services Association of North America (“MSA”) which has been specifically established for the purpose of obtaining tax deductible donations and to effectively distribute and account for the funds provided to Masons and Shriners who receive assistance. You should know that the entire gross donation will be sent to the affected jurisdiction. MSA deducts nothing for administrative expenses or expenses of any kind. Therefore, when you give $100.00, $100.00 gets to Texas Masons!

We have many of our fellow nobles from Sioux City and the surrounding area going to head to Las Vegas for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, a Fed Ex PGA event. You can sign up to work the event as a volunteer and get VIP passes and privileges by working four shifts during the event.

The 2017 tournament will take place November 2–5 at TPC Summerlin. The final rounds will be televised live on The Golf Channel. For more information or to become a sponsor of this event, visit shrinershospitalsopen.com. Follow tournament updates on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook.

Who Packed Your Parachute Today

Charles Plumb, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, was a jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience.

One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, “I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said ‘Good morning,’ ‘how are you?’ or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor.” Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn’t know.

Now, Plumb asks his audience, “Who’s packing your parachute?” Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety.

Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you, congratulate someone on

Potentate’s Message

Dear nobles, ladies and friends, Another month has passed and we are now heavy into a new football season. The Morningside game was a great time as we had a great pregame tailgate set up by Dejay and assisted by Bernie, RC and Colin, among many others. Jeff Zook fired the shotgun off after each Mustang touchdown, and yes we did beat a Division II Truman State team. Morningside seems to be off to another great season.

From what I have heard, the Clay County Fair in Spencer was a great success. With hundreds of kids being served lunch by the Spencer Area Shrine Club, ATV’s and assisted by other units and the Divan. Another job well done by all, thank you.

Get your candidates ready for fall ceremonial on November 4th. We will have a 12:00 PM start with vendors and units setting up in the 2nd floor ballroom for the new candidate reception afterwards. We have many good men out there who would be a great addition to our fraternity. Please look at the new membership drive and enter the name of a potential candidate. The new theme is IM RU and it is a referral program that seems to be working very well. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.

Parents can now check their child’s spine for possible signs of scoliosis with the new app 'SpineScreen' developed by

something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachute.

Neil L. Peck, Chaplain

White Horse Patrol

Greeting from the White Horse Mounted Patrol.

WOW what a way to end the parade season, then to do it in Vial, IA. If you missed that Temple Movement you missed one of the best parades I’ve seen in a long time. Well over 150 entries, 7 of which were handing out free adult beverages. I wonder did our ILL. SR. know this before he booked one of his Temple Movements? Either way very good choice, and the food at the Oasis was just as good. We thank all the people from Vail for there great hospitality and I know the guys gave a lot of horse rides after the parade. I would like to thank Neal Peck for being my partner and clean up the exhaust left behind by the horses. Glad they were feed unleaded feed that week.

Unfortunately the horses did not make it to CSSA due to all the guys on the IR list, along with some cost issues for the horse association. But there were 7 riders along with their ladies who did attend to help support our Temple units who were in competition. We would like to congratulate the Rat Patrol on there 1st place and the Foot Patrol on there 2nd place trophies, you made us all proud. See Roger, told you to just threaten them with the lead ropes and they would stay in line. Even that new guy Noel something and even the old timer

Horst looked good. Oh ok, you too Colin and the rest of the group. So I learned a lesson at the CSSHP meeting. After you have agreed to take the 1st VP job, continue to pay attention and don’t be writing notes in your notebook, cause you wind up being voted in as President and 1st VP. According to the current President I voted 'Ya' on the motion (what was I thinking? Don’t think I was).

By the time this article comes out the annual WHMP Wayne Peterson Memorial trail ride will be history and we hope everyone had a great time.

Our Ladies will be cooking those wonderful cashews on October 21st, so please get with one of them or any rider and get your order placed, these go fast and when there gone there gone till next year. Then the WHMP Fall pitchfork fondue will be held on November 11th at the WHMP Clubhouse.

Till next time and Happy TrailsRich Porter, Scribe

Foot PatrolAs the month of October has arrived

and our weather has cooled down considerably, I would like to convey a special “warm” greeting to all our Foot Patrol Membership and Ladies once again.

Allow be begin with the Vail, Iowa, temple movement parade. As the Foot Patrol was unable to get enough bodies together to march, Fast Eddie and I volunteered to drive the golf cart in the parade. But lo and behold the golf cart never showed. Fast Eddie then got recruited by the Horizontal Band to hold the gong while I took the more leisure activity by riding shotgun in the Hospital Van. For the small

town of Vail, they really knew how to roll out the red carpet. It was a first time parade for me to have been served adult beverages to the crowd, while the parade lasted over two and a half hours.

Well the CSSA convention had come and gone with everyone having had a great time. About five of us couples met at the Sgt. Bluff Rest Stop on I-29, Wednesday morning as we formed a convoy with yours truly being allowed to run the front door. We did quite well until Boss Judy decided that she needed an instant rest stop and I had to duck between several eighteen wheelers to get things accomplished. We lost Sheldon and Rita for a short while but were finally able to reconnect as we made our lunch stop at the Rock Port Exit. From there on things went quite smooth as we arrived at Overland Park, KS close to 3 PM. As soon as we were able to settle into the hotel we had to figure out on how to get to the KC Royals' Stadium. I don’t know whom to credit on the idea of getting the Uber taxies, but they were a life saver on everyone’s sanity. The ball park, as usual, was just spectacular, the weather was perfect and of course the tailgate party, headed up by President Dwight, was outstanding. Just getting to the stadium was a chore of its own and then preparing the dogs and having some cold refreshments was outstanding. Thanks Dwight with everyone else that was involved in this tremendous feat. The game did not have the greatest

outcome but it still had a good suspense that everyone stayed to the last out. At the same time we still had a great time getting those selfies for facebook. Thursday many of us loafed around while checking out the many bargains that we could come up with at the Convention Center. Hopefully the other half didn’t max out her card.

In the evening the majority of the Patrollers dined at the famous Q 39 BBQ

At the October meeting we will be electing officers for 2018, we will meet after the stated meeting.

Grill. What a treat that was. If anyone left that place hungry will be the shock of my life, so kudos to the people that picked it out. The majority of us cut the evening short since the next day was Competition Friday. The new uniforms and shoes were worn with pride while hopefully the inspecting judge will have had some compassion in the few flaws that we were not able to take care of in the short time span we had to work in. We had the competition right at the Convention Center and personally I think we did a very good job with our routine. The scores were quit close with all of the marching units and we ended up in second place. Therefore we did move up one notch from last year. That evening the Foot Patrol got together at Johnny Cascone’s Italian Restaurant to celebrate our doings. VP Patrick Jensen had everything planned out

to a T. He definitely has a knack on sniffing out those great eateries. The Foot Patrol thanks our Illustrious Potentate Kelly Conolly by gracing us with his presence and contribution.

With the parading competition we were jinxed right from the word go. Within the first one hundred yards of the start my partner Bob fought muscle cramps in his foot. Eddie Huster’s knee went out, while one of the marchers, I won’t mention him by name, was so enthused that he was waving at every lady that he passed. In competition it is a no-no to wave. This Pender gentleman is so reserved at our shrine center that he doesn’t even hug the ladies, but at the competition he was just an animal at waving at all of those ladies. What do you think about that, Shelley? Well at least we still got third place.

As September 9th, the Morningside College Shrine Game, came with the dry weather barely holding on. We were able to enjoy a great tailgate party with RC flipping those burgers. As we got close to game time five patrollers grabbed those flags while Fast Eddie operated that drum. Except for the Chanters getting slightly ahead of us, we got the job done. The game was very exciting as there was a lot of scoring on both sides, but we were able to stay ahead to the end of the game.

If you are bored and need some entertainment in your life, put this on your “To Do List”. Buy four pigs, paint numbers 1, 2, 3 & 5 on their backs. Release them in

Wal-Mart. Now sit back and watch security search for number 4.

September 16th was Gary and Orline Herbst’s annual Foot Patrol’s breakfast, which has been one of our favorite activities and always well attended. I will report more of this in our next issue. At the same time the Foot Patrol thanks Gary and Orline for their extraordinary work they go to make it such a success.

Now if you have not realized it, Halloween will be upon us on the 31st. So don’t let those monsters get the best of you.

Now here is Kenny’s Korner! Actually Kenny was thinking that women need to put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans!

When people see his cat’s litter box, they always say ‘Oh, have you got a cat?’ Next time he will say, ‘No it’s for company!’

It seems extraordinary on how people are reading the Bible a lot more as they get older. Are they cramming for their finals?

Until next month, Horst Zittlau, Sec. / scribe

Hospital DadsSometimes I feel like submitting re-

run articles, but since it’s done on tv, and that gets old quickly. I’d better try harder and find something more credible and here’s hoping I did.

Through the eyes and mind of a child.A former President of Kiwanis

International tells the following story. He had been the special guest speaker to

a Kiwanis Club in a small town and was spending the night with a club member who was a farmer on the outskirts of the town. He and the farmer had just gotten comfortable when the newsboy delivered the evening paper. The boy noticed the sign, “Puppies for Sale!” He got off his bike and asked, “How much do you want for the pups, Mister?”

“Twenty-five dollars each, son.” The boy’s face dropped. “Well sir, could I at least see them anyway?” The farmer whistled and in a moment the mother dog came bounding around the corner of the house followed by four of the cutest puppies you had ever seen. Wagging their tails and yipping happily. Finally another pup, a straggler, came around the house, dragging one hind leg. “What’s the matter with that puppy, Mister?” the boy asked. “Well son, that puppy is crippled. We had the vet x-ray her. There’s no hip joint and that leg will never be right”.

To the amazement of both men, the boy dropped the bike, and reached for his collection bag and took out two quarters. “Please Mister”, the boy pleaded, “I want to buy that pup.” “I’ll pay to 50 cents every week until the $25 is paid. Honest, I will, Mister.”

The farmer replied, “But son, you don’t seem to understand. That pup will never be able to run or jump. She is going to be a crippled dog forever. Why in the world would you want such a useless pup as that? I’ll be glad to give her to you. She’s not

worth anything anyway.”The boy paused for a moment, then

reached down to pull up his pant leg, exposing a leg brace. The boy answered, “Mister that pup is going to need someone who understands her, to help her in life!”

And…don’t we all?! I don’t know of a person in this world who doesn’t need friends, and someone to understand, and to care, and to love! Do you? We all need to build our life on relationships and good times with good friends.

Many times we equate wisdom with age, overlooking what youngsters have to offer, if for a bit, we would listen.

If I have learned nothing else in the last 20 plus years, the resiliency of children who dwell and utilize their abilities rather than disabilities is something that awes me. Lord, forgive me when I complain!

Before I close, I saw the obituary column a short while back of Jim Mattison. He had a number of trips with Abu Bekr, before retiring in Crofton, Nebraska to his “retirement” home. After moving there, he made a number of trips from Yankton on behalf of El Riad in Sioux Falls. Our condolences to the family.

A short anecdote including kids. Ok?A teacher was telling her class little

stories in natural history and she asked if anyone could tell her what a groundhog was. A little hand went up waving frantically. “Well Carl, you may tell us what a groundhog is.” The boy replied, “It’s a sausage!”

Be the reason someone smiled today.Eternally & Sincerely,

Kan DuettesOK, Ladies. Time to relegate those

flip-flops to the rear of the closet and blow the dust off those black patent Mary Janes. It’s time for Kan Duettes to meet again. Wednesday, September 27th at Brookdale (formerly known as North Park). It has been a long, hot summer with lots of events...some good, some bad.

We lost faithful member Joyce McCormick. Since she joined I think the only Kan Duette Meeting she missed was because she was on one of her twenty three cruises. That’s right... twenty three cruises. Of course, it helped to have a son who is a travel agent... son, Rod. We send out Kan Duette condolences to both he and older brother, Scott, as well as the rest of the family. Joyce was a long time member of Daughters of the Nile, too, and served as Chaplin for many years. Daughters of the Nile performed their lovely ritual at her funeral. Her bright and bubbly personality will be missed.

Sheryl Brosamle’s pet project, the Preservation of Latham Park, held their annual fund raiser this past weekend. The Park looked good and and there was lots to do. Hope you made lots of money, Sheryl.

Attended the 32nd Annual Chamber of Commerce Dinner. The speaker was Robert O’Neill, the Navy Seal who wrote the book, “The Operator: Firing the Shots That Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior.” Friend Barb Maxon, Realtor Extraordinaire, buys my ticket as my Birthday present. We tried to figure out how many years we have attended the event and we think it is nineteen years.

When you are retired you don’t see all the people that you saw on a day to day basis so this is a real treat for me.

Norma and Don Severide’s daughter, Diane Cox, longtime teacher, passed away recently. Don was a Realtor in Morningside for years and Norma closed loans for Security National Bank. Their other daughter, Linda, has been gone for some time. Condolences to the family. Don was my first Broker and I worked for him for several years.

Til we meet again...Your Scribe,

Mary Ann Davidson

Kossuth Shrine Club

Dr. Tom Gruis, K. Y. G. C. H.The Kossuth County Shrine Club’s car

cruises to various town in the county have been very successful in raising money for Shrine Hospitals. I think I have this right: the last one had 27 cars and 47 people participating. There is a $10.00 charge or each car and all of that goes to the hospital!

By the way, neither of the proposed legislative items passed at Grand Lodge.

I used to have many Masonic emblems on my car including Blue Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Shrine, Grotto, Eastern Star, High Twelve, etc.

Now I have just two. The most important one to me is Past Master and the other one is York Rite where I have been very active including Past Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Iowa. It is from that group that the K. Y. G. C. H comes.

But the most important to me, again is Past Master. The Brothers who elect you are the ones you see most often and know

you the best. Now the leaves are turning and school

has been in session for a while and some hunting seasons are imminent. For one of the biggest catches of all weapons and lassos are not allowed nor bows and arrows either.

So, what is the proverbial big game? Masonic Officers. I have noticed that Secretary and Chaplain are usually the hardest to fill when an opening does come up.

Back in the Des Moines area I have had contact with several organizations in the Masonic family and the yearly hunt is on. I speak of two Lodges and three appendant groups – so far.

I have slowed down due to antiquity and a bit of a mobility concern since falling last December on north Iowa ice in Algona. Slowed down but still doing what I feel I responsibly can. It is enjoyable and rewarding – besides being of service to Brothers! Be slow to say no unless it is for a substantial reason, and there are indeed those.

years back. We had been married about 33-1/2 years at that time and many times we have looked at Jeeps. She always had wanted one. Finally we found what seemed to be a good one up in Minnesota and drove up and she bought it.

On one of the evenings when the temperature dropped down we took a ride in it, and the top was in the garage, and there was a wind chill factor. I had a jacket in the car and put it on and noticed that it was really warmer when it was used more as a cloak with my arms enclosed.

In the whole family of Masonic orders when we assume an office we have to put on a particular jacket or uniform as a symbol of more responsibility than anything else. In these roles sometimes issues and problems arise and sometimes the fellowship factor drifts a bit away from us for a time.

But Masonry, in whatever form, finally comes to feel more like the nice warm cloak when we can be totally surrounded by it! There can be the “wind chill” in the regular day to day world but in the order there is always the high probability of the warmth and caring of friendship. This is when we stop and view the whole picture of the practices and purposes of Masonry and whatever our order of concentration may be and the welcome warmth comes in around us.

Travel safe and God Bless.Tom “Doc” Gruis

Wrecking CrewHello from the Crew and welcome to

fall.It is the season for high school football,

pumpkin patches and harvesting the crops. The parade season is over and the units would normally be put to bed. But not this year, as the bell is going in for a major update and refurbishing. We are having a new scimitar built by Avery Brothers and the carriage rebuilt by our own RC. We can’t wait to see how they look next spring at the circus. Aaron is working on another surprise unit and Jeff Z and Brian are going to be getting the Wonder Wheel a major overhaul. It is an exciting time to be in the Crew.

October 4th is our annual Steak Fry. $20 for a steak, potato and all the fixings. This is once again this year a Wed night in place of burgers see our ad in elsewhere in this edition. Also coming right up is the Fall Ceremonial on November 4th. There will once again be a meet and greet on the second floor mezzanine. We will have a new signature drink, no doubt created by our very own Jarrod the boozy bartender. We will be meeting prior to clean and taste test his test batches. Quality control is always important to insure a product equal to our lofty reputation, I mean come on it’s not like we are a fly by night outfit.

We need to remember to visit your home lodges as we have several Crew

members in the chairs including at least one Master and several Wardens, plus various other places and stations. We need to take pride in our lodges and stay active to help grow Masonry and the Shrine. It should be our privilege to help with the conferral of degrees and the monthly meetings. Think back to the early teachings of the degrees to help guide your life and dealings with mankind. I know that this author is nowhere near as good as he could be, but I try and get better every day.

Now on to what you have all been waiting for.

THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF BILLYBIGRIGGER

BillyBigRigger and Russell the Love Muscle decided to go ice fishing one day. As they were drilling a hole, they heard a voice from on high say “There are no fish under the ice.” So they moved over 25 feet and were just getting ready to start a new hole when the voice said louder “There are no fish under the ice.” BillyBigRigger looked up and asked “Are you God?” The voice spoke back and said “No you idiots I’m the ice rink attendant!”

Twin Cities Shrine Hospital

The Human Resources Committee of your Twin Cities SHC held an employee appreciation ice cream social in conjunction with our September Board of Governors meeting. As a member of the HR Committee we were looking for a nice way to say thank you to the staff. I made a phone call to the Governor of the Ice Cream Capital of the World, Noble Fred Wells. What better way to say thank you to the staff, patients and family members at the hospital than with Blue Bunny Ice Cream. On behalf of the Twin Cities SHC, I would like to thank Noble Fred Wells for his generosity in donating the delicious Blue Bunny ice cream novelty treats.

10 October 2017 Abu Bekr Newscontinued from previous pagedone a fantastic job in streamlining our patient intake process. This is reflected in our new patient scheduling report that shows a 22% increase in the number of new patients referred and an 11% increase in the number of new referrals accepted. All this shows the hard work that is being done by our Patient Recruitment/Physician Recruitment staff and our Marketing & Public Relations staff.

We learned that Sophia Jones has left the TC-SHC Physician Recruitment Team and we are currently conducting interviews for her replacement. Sophia did a fine job representing the Twin Cities SHC and working with Shriners across our territory. Ms. Jones has taken a new position that will enable her to work from home and spend more time with her family. We all wish her the very best.

medical conferences and professional associations to network and present the Twin Cities SHC Physicians and medical service lines. If you know of a professional conference that would welcome our staff, please contact me or Erin Jurkovich at the TC-SHC. Erin’s number is 612-986-7207.

The FY 2018 budget was ratified by the Board of Governors and is being sent to Tampa for final approval by the Joint Boards. For 2018 our annual operating budget is $14,834,000. The budget is up just over $200,000 from the FY 2017 budget. The Board approved a Capital Budget for equipment of $500K with items that can be purchased if additional donor funding is raised. One of the main items is new radiology equipment that will replace our current 20 year old equipment for $365K. If you know of potential donors that we can meet with that would like to support our TC-SHC, contact me to schedule a donor meeting.

Our conversations with the Mayo Clinic continue at the Executive level between Tampa and the leadership in Rochester. As I have told all of you before, this will be a long and deliberate

process as the two organizations discuss future collaboration that will benefit both organizations.

I had the pleasure to meet with a group of Shrine Ladies, Nobles, and their friends in Le Mars to share about the mission and programs of Shriners Hospitals for Children and our Twin Cities unit. I’m always glad to hit the road and meet with civic, church groups, and potential donors to educate and enlighten the public about what we do as Shriners and why we all work so hard to support the World’s Greatest Philanthropy. Give me a call if you have a group where you would like me to present.

Again, it’s all about finding new patients for our TC-SHC. We need more patient volume and you are our greatest referral source. Don’t be shy if you see a child whose family Shriners Hospital for Children can help. It takes all of us working hard, together!

Yours in the Faith,David G. Krogh, P.P.,
