The Queen’s 90th Birthday Picnic

We celebrated the Queen’s 90th Birthday in style! We were blessed with one of the few dry, fine days and we all enjoyed a ‘Magic Show’ and ‘Circus Skills Demonstration’. We had a great morning ending with a picnic for the whole school on the field and ice cream treats for everyone. Once again we are grateful to the OPA for funding the entertainment and ice creams!

Transition’s Trip to Tropical Wings

Transition classes went to Tropical Wings Farm in Chelmsford on the 24 May. The excited children got to look around the farm at exotic birds and many farm animals. They even got up close to free roaming wallabies. During our visit we had a talk from the mini beast experts about different types of mini beasts and the brave even got to touch some. After our talk we were able to go into the Tropical Wings hot house. Full of amazing and colourful butterflies the children were able to walk through observing the different stages of a life cycle of a butterfly. Some children stood so still that the butterflies actually landed on their heads.

Years 4 and 5—Young Mariners Base Trip

Years 4 and 5 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Young Mariners Base. They were involved in a range of water sports including sailing, canoeing, kayaking and bell boating. Team building skills were further reinforced in other activities including raft building, caving and archery. This was a wonderful experience for the children of Oaklands School.

Year 6—Crucial Crew Trip

‘On the 8 June Year 6 went to Crucial Crew. We really enjoyed it and learnt so much.

It was disconcerting learning how abundant sugar was in drinks. One had 15 cubes of sugar! Which is twice the amount you’re meant to have.

My second favourite part was examining the crash scene involving the bikes and the driver. We learnt that if you’re using your phone it takes 80% of your concentration and you are 4 times more likely to be seen when wearing bright clothing. We concluded that it was the biker’s fault as his chain was rusty, he was listening to music, had no helmet and dark clothing.

We also learnt how to deal with bullies, about social media, fires, alcohol and smoking. We learnt lots and it was extremely good fun.’

Sameer (Year 6)

Transition—Baking

After Sports Day most of the Transition children went home for the afternoon however the remaining children had the treat of baking and decorating fairy cakes – yum yum!!

OPA Summer Fete

What a brilliant afternoon! The sun almost shone and there were many exciting activities for the children to enjoy. The ‘Pimms’ tent seemed to be popular with many parents and visitors! There was a BBQ lunch, cooked by Ian our chef, and music to listen to courtesy of the Paul Bartels Jazz Band. Our thanks to the OPA committee and class reps who organised the event and those of you who helped man the stalls. Well done and we look forward to hearing how much money was raised for the children of Oaklands School.

Year 6—Epping Forest District Museum Trip

‘Year 6 visited Epping Forest District Museum for the morning. First they completed a sheet about Anglo Saxon town names in modern times. Next they saw real Anglo Saxon artefacts and investigated replicas to see which one was real. Then they explored the museum compering modern bikes, cameras and chocolate wrappers to older bikes, cameras and wrappers. They also saw a skeleton of a monk. Afterwards they went to the shop.’ Raffi (Year 6)

Father’s Day in Transition

To celebrate Father’s Day we invited our Transition daddies in for some artistic fun. They thoroughly enjoyed having their portraits painted by their child then they had an even greater time painting their child’s portrait. The daddies all went home with a delicious cup cake each as a ‘Thank you’.

Year 2—Instrumental Concert

On Tuesday 7 June instrumentalists from Year 2 gave a Concert to Parents after School at 3.45pm. Everyone performed extremely well, particularly as this was the very first performance on their instruments for most of the children. We heard recorder, piano, guitar and violin and it was encouraging to see some many pupils playing. Thank you to all who listen and encourage these young musicians.

RNLI The Lifeboat collection box is in the school office until the

27 June. A small donation would be appreciated.

Thank you for helping save lives at sea.

Year 4—Suntrap Forest Education Centre Trip

Year 4 had a wonderful time at Suntrap Forest Education Centre. As part of their geography topic on mapping skills, pupils were able to develop their skills in compass navigation and orienteering. They were able to use compasses and ordnance survey maps to locate different landmarks in the centre and the surrounding forest. The children were enthusiastic, well organised and thoroughly enjoyed their day out.

Garden Room visit Paradise Park

Garden Room children enjoyed their visit to Paradise Park, in spite of the torrential down pour! They got to look at many animals including lions, tigers and meerkats. All of the children were a credit to Oaklands, their behaviour was excellent. Riya said “I liked the Zebras, they threw hay at us”. Ben said “I liked the Red Panda. He was hiding in the tree”. Jack said “I liked feeding the farm animals”.

Transition to Year 6—Dance Display

At last the weather was kind to us so we were able to hold the Dance Display on Tuesday 21 June. We were entertained by dances based on ‘Jack in the Boxes’, ‘Snow White’, ‘Thunder Birds’, ‘Aladdin’, ‘Mission Impossible’, ‘Starlight Express’, ‘Bones’, ‘Dancing Shadow’, ‘The Cleaning Gang’ and ‘Uptown Funk’. The KS2 Dance Club performed two well rehearsed routines to an ‘Abba Medley’ and ‘Hold my Hand’ by Jess Glynn. Congratulations to all the children from Transitions to Year 6 for performing so superbly!
