PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
professionalism with data showing that our
students continue to grow academically. This is
reflected in the exciting news that both of our
2018 HSC students have been offered places in
university, continuing the trend of students
going onto university after completing their
HSC at Oaklands Central School.
The start of the year is always exciting with all
students involved in swim school as we move
towards the Swimming Carnival. Students have
already elected their House Leaders and the
excitement is building as the carnival
approaches. This year we will continue to run a
twilight carnival as this avoids having students
competing in the hottest part of the day, when
UV is at its worst and also allows for parents,
friends and community to join with us and enjoy
the competition. We would love to have all
parents and carers join us for the evening. The
carnival is being held on Thursday 14th
February @ 3pm.
Remember that we keep our website up-to-date
with what is happening at the school. Simply go
to https://oaklands-c.schools.nsw.gov.au/ and all
the upcoming events are listed on the front
page. By bookmarking the page and checking it
regularly you will be informed about events at
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It was great to see all our students arriving
last Wednesday for their first day of school
for 2019 looking so happy and relaxed. I would
like to give an especially warm welcome to all
our new kindergarten students and Year 7
students. This year will be both exciting and a
big change for them all. While it is still early,
all of our students have settled in really well
for the start of the year.
Our staff started the year off with a
Development Day on the Tuesday before our
students started. This was the first day at
Oaklands Central for Mr Jye McGuire, who is
joining our Secondary Department. During the
day staff undertook mandatory training as well
as participating in professional learning in the
Literacy and Numeracy Progressions. The
progressions are a new and important tool in
supporting students with Literacy and
Numeracy. We are very privileged to have such
dedicated and professional staff working at
Oaklands Central School. During the last few
years we have seen the impact of such
the school. We also post regularly on our
Facebook Page to encourage everyone to be
connected as part of our school community.
Finally, at the start of each school year there
are always worries or concerns along with high
hopes and expectations for every parent and
student. This is especially so for those starting
Kindergarten and Year 7. At Oaklands Central
School we work extremely hard to make school
a great experience and to allow every one of our
students to shine their light in their own way.
We work with our parents and community to
guide our students in their learning and growth.
The short poem “First Day of School” captures
all of this…
At Oaklands Central School we are looking
forward to a fantastic 2019!
Peter Craft
Principal
Welcome back to all parents, community
members, staff and students as we commence
our 2019 school year! We have settled straight
back into our learning and all students have
impressed us with their efforts as they start
their year of learning. We would like to share a
big welcome to our 2019 Kindergarten students
who have settled into life at ‘Big School’
seamlessly. Thank you to all the students who
have supported our new kinders in their smooth
transition to school.
PRIMARY NEWS
First Day of School
The first day of school can be hard
for Mom and Dad.
Part of you feels excited, the other
part feels sad.
For many years you've held their
hand, and have been their loving
guide.
Now you know the time has come to
leave them by my side.
But it is only for a little while, as
your child will learn and grow.
And at the end of every day, they
will share with you all they know.
So as you walk away don’t worry
anymore.
We'll take care of all those
precious gifts when you leave them at
our door.

NEW School Banking
We have had an extremely busy start to the year
as always, with the start of our Ten Day
Intensive Swimming Program. All students are
already showing great progress with their
swimming and should be proud of their efforts.
Keep working hard as we head towards our Whole
School Twilight Swimming Carnival to be held
next Thursday.
On Wednesday 13th February, we are having a
special visit from Life Education Van - Healthy
Harold. Notes about the Life Education Van visit
were sent home in Week 2, so please ensure they
are returned on time so your child doesn’t miss
out on this great learning opportunity and
experience.
Kind Regards,
Sally McRorie,
Assistant Principal
Welcome back to 2019. We are looking forward
to a productive year of learning ahead of us.
Reminding you all of our three strategic
directions. Firstly there is ‘Learning’. In
secondary we are working towards teachers
being leaders in their subject area and being up
to date with effective teaching methods. Across
secondary this year we will look at utilising the
literacy and numeracy progressions to help track
and grow students. We also work towards
individualised programs so students are working
towards their own learning goals.
Secondly, we have ‘Teaching’. In secondary this
is to ensure that students have access to
engaging and challenging learning experiences.
Teachers across secondary will be participating
in a number of professional learning
opportunities to continue to grow their practice.
Secondary staff will be using coaching to help
staff self-reflect and collaborate to ensure
students are getting access to high quality
learning experiences.
Finally we have ‘School Growth’. In secondary we
hold our connections with the local community
high on our priority list. It is important that we
all work together enabling individual students to
become successful and happy future citizens.
Students are encouraged to take on leadership
roles and build their confidence through various
opportunities as they progress through school
Over the last couple of weeks our Year 11 and
Year 7 students have had sharp learning curves
as they enter new chapters of their education.
Here are the thoughts from the Year 11

students about starting their Preliminary Higher
School Certificate.
Acacia Hayward - I've been scared all holidays,
but looking forward to the learning
Victoria Dehn - Feeling nervous about the hard
work starting all at once. I am looking forward to
having our own study space.
Britney Martin - Nervous and scared about the
video conferencing.
Liam Summons - I'm excited to learn about the
new subjects.
Over the next couple of weeks secondary
students will be participating in swim school as
they prepare for the swimming carnival and learn
a number of life-saving skills.
Students in Year 7 will be involved in BEST Start
this coming week and all students across years
7-10 will be involved in some activities to gain
baseline data for their current abilities in
literacy and numeracy.
May this year be productive for all involved.

Community Defibrillator News
In August 2018 the Oaklands Recreation Ground Committee realised that the
“use by” date on the pads for the community defibrillator was upon us. The
community defibrillator is located at the Oaklands Rural Fire Brigade shed for
many years.
The Committee realised the pads needed to be replaced immediately. The
pads cost $307.00. The Committee sought funding from a grant program
offered by Charles Sturt University. An application was made to Charles
Sturt University Community University partnerships (CUP) Head of Campus
(HOC) Small Grants Fund. The grant application was successful and the
funding received in December 2018. The pads in the defibrillator have been
replaced and the defibrillator is situated in its own box on the side of the
Oaklands Rural Fire Brigade building.
Please make yourself aware of its location as you never know when you may
need to access it. (Note: no key required). It is well documented that early
defibrillation in the event of a cardiac arrest can improve the chances of
surviving a heart attack.
The Oaklands Recreation Ground Committee would sincerely like to thank
Charles Sturt University CUP HOC Grants Program for supporting rural and
regional communities such as ours, so we may continue to have access to
programs and assets vital for our growth, health and sustainability.
