Oak Grove Mission Statement
Our mission is to glorify God through worship, bring people to faithful
discipleship in Christ, equip them for ministry in the church and the
world, and grow in our love for one another through fellowship.
FROM YOUR PASTOR
What a glorious day God gave us for our 125th anniversary cele-
bration! There was rain the night before, but the wet grass and
pavement quickly dried up, and we were greeted with a beautiful
sunny day. Beautiful fall wreaths were on the front doors to greet
worshippers and the altar was adorned with a magnificent flower
arrangement. The band played a lovely prelude of triumphant
hymns before the service began. A large crowd was assembled in
the sanctuary. The congregational singing accompanied by the
organ and trumpets was exceptional. The dieners did a wonderful
job serving the congregation. Former pastor, Rev. Christian We-
ber, brought greetings and commended the congregation on its
faithfulness through the years. The anthems sung by the choir
were absolutely beautiful. Bishop Graham Rights gave an inspir-
ing message about “Our Reason For Being” which is to be a
church engaged in missions. He gave a short history of the early
Moravian mission movement and shared how much mission work
was done in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since the 1980’s the Mo-
ravian Church has entered into another active period of mission
work. Graham reminded the congregation of all the mission and
outreach we are involved in (quite a long and impressive list) and
the amount of money ($6,300) we gave away to missions last
year. After singing our Moravian National Anthem, “Sing Hallelujah
Praise the Lord” we processed outside for the dedication of our
new Prayer Garden. Then we gathered on, around, and in front of the church steps to
the sanctuary for a group picture. We enjoyed a delicious covered dish lunch with an abundant
spread of food. The crowd was so large we couldn’t seat everyone
in the fellowship hall and some had to eat in classrooms. (That’s a
good problem to have.) It was a truly wonderful day and there was a great spirit of Chris-
tian love, warmth, and fellowship experienced by all of us. God bless and I’ll see you in church!

BOARD OF ELDERS REPORT
The Elders met Tuesday, September 11 after the Joint Board meet-ing. Everyone prayed for the needs of our church and members. An update was given on the Pictorial Directory. Picture sign-ups are underway. Church Council was discussed and appointments were made for sec-retary, parliamentarian, and tellers. A Clothes Drive was approved for Sunday, October 7 with all dona-tions going to Sunnyside Ministry. Mission Sunday was approved for October 14 and members from a Friedberg mission team who went to Peru this summer will speak. Pastor Allen will speak at the RCC Revival to be held at Fairview on Sunday, October 14.
New Pictorial Directory
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, October 1, 2 and 3 photo-
graphs for the new pictorial directory will be made on those
afternoons and into the evenings. If you have yet to make your
appointment, please call the church office. Pictorial directories
are so helpful in placing names with faces. Make sure YOUR
face is in it! You must have your picture made in order to re-
ceive a directory.
Youth Fellowship Events During Vacation Bible School’s Amazing
Desert Journey, we learned about how
many places in the world do not have
clean water and how it causes death and
illness. Clean water is a blessing we of-
ten take for granted. Empty water bot-
tles were given to the young people and
they were asked to collect coins. By the
end of the week the bottles were emp-
tied and the money filled up a gallon
pickle jar! The grand total collected
was $233.55! That collection was do-
nated to PROJECT CLEAN WATER
through the Lutheran Church Missouri
Synod in St. Louis. To learn more about
this mission, go to www.cph.org/vbs .
THANK YOU FOR
SHARING GOD’S LOVE
BY COLLECTING THOSE DONATIONS!
May God bless each young person and work in eve-ry heart in this delightful ministry!
John 15:12 This is my commandment, that
you love one another as I have loved you.
Newsletter Notes
From around the Southern Province
A huge “thank you” goes to all who worked to make the second Moravi-an Festival September 8 at New Philadelphia such a tremendous suc-cess. From food to displays to educational exhibits and outreach oppor-tunities to Moravian arts and crafts for sale — all of it was wonderful and proved that, yes, we Moravians can put on a big show. Now let’s take all that enthusiasm and step forward into the future in our service to the Lord.
Big news from Moravia: The not yet Olympic status “watermelon seed spitting contest” took place August 12. We quote: “The competition was fierce, people dodging errant watermelon seeds. The survivors, that is, the winners, were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals.” Best of all was the “truck load of watermelons, enough to make a downright mess of things.”
In the “when it rains, it pours” department: Mayodan’s fellowship hall suffered a small flood. The culprit, a gutter overflow, has been fixed. And then the heat pump “gave up the battle and just died.” Fellowship hall now has a new heat pump. It’s “little” things like this that keep trustees busy.
We don’t often have a gleaning of ministerial trivia, but September’s newsletters had several:
Kernersville hanged Br. Don Winters, not for any high or low crime, but because on his last Sunday before retirement his picture was hung with all the other ministers of Kernersville going back to the church’s beginning in 1868.
Point 7. Or seven-tenths of a point. Or .7. That is the basketball scoring average of Konnoak Hills’ Br. John D. Rights back in 1977 at West Forsyth High School. That might seem “pidley,” but it spawned a friend-ship with teammates that spanned racial differences and in reunion 35 years later shows how God can work immeasurable good from such a small contribution.
Friedberg planned to pack the church with 525 worshipers on “Back to Church Sunday,” September 23, and the ministers boldly offered “incentives” to inspire the congregation to meet the goal. Br. Jim New-some promised to have his head shaved in public that day. And Br. Tom Shelton said he would ride the “Intimidator” mega-coater at Carowinds. An update on this next month.

OCTOBEr IS
PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH
It is a time to honor and say thank you to our pastor, Matthew, as he
inspires us to grow in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Here are some ideas for how you can let Matthew know he is loved and
appreciated.
Pray daily for Matthew.
Invite others to hear him preach.
Ask Matthew what you could do to assist him with his ministry and to
lighten his load of responsibility.
Invite him to a dinner or party with your family and friends.
Support him with your attendance, participation and financial re-
sources.
Remember him with a gift on his birthday, at Christmas or other spe-
cial occasions.
Just a brief note or phone call of gratitude for Matthew can give him
a lift and positive encouragement for his 24-7 job doing whatever he
can to make life better for you.
During this month, do something nice for Matthew to show appreciation
for his ministry.

A clothing drive will be held Sunday, Oct. 7 for Sunny Side Ministries. Please clean out your closets and bring "gently used" clothing to the fellowship hall on Sunday, Oct. 7 and it will be taken to Sunny Side the next day. This plan worked well last year and gives you a month to clean out the closets for unused items as well as things you just don't need anymore! All donations are appreciated and remember that Sunny Side can also use sheets, towels, etc.

God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. OCTOBER 2012
“Money is deeply and significantly symbolic.
It isn’t just a silver coin or a piece of en-
graved paper; it represents our time and our
talents as well. It is symbolic because when
we give of our money, we are giving of our-
selves. And the contrary is also true; when
we withhold our money, we are withholding
of ourselves.”
Real stewardship means more than giving money for
God’s work on earth. It involves offering all that we are
and all that we have to serve our Creator who is the Giver
of all in the first place: body, mind, spirit, talent and ener-
gy. Stewardship is fulfilling God’s plan for us as we live,
serve, and give our all for the one who made us and keeps
us here on earth.
There is a story about a man who understood the re-
quirements of being a faithful steward. Another man ob-
served his seemingly tireless work on behalf of his church
and the community asked the man why he did so much to
serve God and needy people in the town where he lived.
The worthy steward replied by saying that he believed God
was Lord and King over all the earth. He believed it was a
privilege to serve as a servant and use his life to work on
behalf of the kingdom of God. He might also have said that
we Christians often pray for God’s Kingdom to come and
for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in Heaven. If that
is so, why shouldn’t we try to help make the prayer come
true by being worthy servants of the Lord here and now?
Prayer: Lord of us all, make us restless until we find rest
by loving and serving you. Help us to remember daily that
Jesus lived on earth as one who served. Guide us so that we
may do the same. In his name. Amen

A Stewardship Moment
Dear Oak Grove family, Thank you for the flowers, cards, visits and prayers while I have been in the hospital and the rehab. Love, Willie Disher
Dear Oak Grove Moravian Church, On behalf of our students, teachers and parents, I want to thank you for your donation of school supplies to Middle Fork Elementary School. The supplies will be given to students and used in the classroom as well as to enrich the general deliv-ery of instruction in all subject areas. Our school system, while adequately providing us with resources, still struggles to allocate funds to individual schools to buy items needed at the school. Again, thank you for putting your love of children into action with your generous and heartfelt donation to our school. Sincerely, Donald Hampton, Principal
