Oak Grove Mission Statement
Our mission is to glorify God through worship, bring people to faithful
discipleship in Christ, equip them for ministry in the church and the
world, and grow in our love for one another through fellowship.
From Your Pastor
We’ve had an exceptionally busy, but really great September at Oak
Grove! I want to thank everyone for all their hard work and support of all that we have accomplished this month.
Saturday, September 6 we hosted the Provincial Women’s Fall Cele-
bration with 81 women from 19 area Moravian churches participat-
ing. It was the largest such gathering they have had in many years. Our ladies were gracious hostesses and served a bountiful and deli-
cious lunch. I was the only gentleman here, but I enjoyed helping
and greeting all the ladies from the province. We received countless
accolades for our hospitality. Everyone was very impressed with
Oak Grove and we have certainly raised the bar for future events
like this. I am so proud of our church!
Sunday, September 7 we showed the movie “God’s Not Dead.” 22
were here to watch it and we had great discussion afterwards. Both
the adults and the youth are doing a study based on the movie
Wednesday nights.
Saturday, September 13 we had our first ever Community Market.
Again, a great success for our church! We had 12 vendors and a
steady stream of visitors all day. Everyone worked well together
and there was a good spirit of camaraderie. Everyone seemed well
pleased and consensus is we will do it again next year.
Saturday, September 20 our church had a tent at Apple Festival at
Bethabara. We had many folks to come by and see our displays
and get information about our church. Then at 5:30 we joined with
the other churches in our RCC for a covered dish picnic at Bethaba-ra. We were blessed by hearing the Forsyth Prison and Jail Choir
sing and give testimonies. Thanks to Oak Grove members who par-
ticipated and helped “man” the tent. And our band members, too.
The youth are enjoying their new room on Wednesday nights. Come
upstairs and see for yourselves. We still need a few items of furni-ture and some things to hang on the walls. If you can help with an-
ything, see me or Angie Renigar.
We still have Anniversary Sunday to look forward to on September
28! Please be in attendance on that special day.
I thank God for all He is doing at Oak Grove. Come and be a part of
all the excitement!
God bless and I’ll see you in church, Matthew

Our Archivist Daniel says farewell
The latest September 11 “Lunchtime Lecture” of the Moravian Archives and Moravian Music Foundation is now available on YouTube on the Internet. It’s Daniel Crews as he delivers “A Few Final Words” before retir-ing on September 30. With his unique brand of humor, Br. Crews gives a delightful summary of his 22 years as Archivist of the Moravian Church, Southern Province.
We all shall miss him. Here’s the link to YouTube:

Society relives Stoneman’s
Raid to Salem
The Wachovia Historical Society invites you to at-tend its 119th annual meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oc-tober 21, at the Old Salem Visitor Center. Historian Chris J. Hartley, author of Stoneman’s Raid, 1865, will speak on “Driving Old Dixie Down: Stoneman’s Raid Comes to Salem.”
The meeting is free and open to the public.
The Wachovia Historical Society was organized by Moravians in Salem in 1895. Its purpose then — and to-day — is “the collection, preservation, and dissemina-tion of everything relating to the history, antiquities, and literature of the Moravian Church in the South and the secular and religious development of North Carolina and the adjoining States.”
The Society welcomes new members. For more in-formation visit the Society’s web site at www.WachoviaHistoricalSociety.org.
Read about the Society’s organizing in the March 1895 issue of The Wachovia Moravian at http://MoravianArchives.org/history/the-wachovia-moravian/.
With special thanks to all of you, To know you is to know people who are kind, consider-ate, and thoughtful. To know you is to be grateful for the special things you do. For everything you’ve done...for being the special people that you are...thank you so very much. I want to thank each of you for your kind thoughts and most of all your prayers. Finally af-ter a summer of recuperation from my feet and legs I have now had a terrible bout with my Fall allergies and bronchitis. I miss seeing each of you and hope it won’t be long until I am finally on the mend. Love and prayers, Sally Barneycastle
On behalf of the Provincial Women’s Board, please accept my sincere thanks for a wonderful day at our Fall Celebration. The hospitality of your ladies was so warm and inviting. From the moment we entered, we felt wel-come. There was a pleasant atmosphere for the entire event. The salads were beautiful as well as delicious and those bountiful desserts were quite well received. Thank you again for the obvious thought and hard work that went into your planning and carrying out such an enjoyable event. Blessings to you all, Janet Doub
Newsletter Notes
From around the Southern Province
Report (many thanks!) on the Province-wide Children’s Festival held at Historic Bethabara Park on August 17, the an-niversary of the first Children’s Festival held in Herrnhut in 1727:
“The Children's Festival went very well. Probably 200 folks were there including the volunteers [and] all four Bish-ops. I heard one older adult comment after the lovefeast that it restored their faith in the future of the Church, as they watched the youth and children so actively participate in wor-ship. I think this is the type of event that brings the children together, and like being at Laurel Ridge for a week in the summer, reinforces the community many of us feel toward our Brothers and Sisters in other congregations. It may just be me, but I think Jesus looked down on Bethabara and had a very happy smile on his face.”
Now that it has fixed up its back entranceway and added an elevator, Friedberg is repaving the lower parking lot and repairing and restriping the upper parking lot. Assurances are given that all work will be completed in time for the big fall supper November 1.
With Water of Life Lutheran, which shares the building, Covenant held its first “blue jean service” September 7. Wor-shipers were encouraged to dress casual for the service before going to a nearby assisted living home for outdoor yard work and indoor hymn singing and visitation with residents. Richard W. OAK GROVE’S
TRUNK-OR-TREAT
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2014
5:00 p.m.
We need volunteers to open up their trunks and pass out
treats to our kids. Please put your name on the sign-up
sheet on the bulletin board if you can pass out treats!
After the kids have gone around to all the trunks, Pastor
Allen will share some stories with the younger children.
There will also be games, contests, prizes and supper!
Supper will be served in the Fellowship Hall.
The children of our church and community thank you for
your participation and donations!
Thank you...The Women’s Provincial Fall Celebration was a tremendous success for everyone involved. We were given lots of wonderful compliments and thanks for hosting the event. There were 19 different churches represented, and most of the ladies had never been to our church. I was so proud to be a member of Oak Grove, and to be a part of a special group of ladies (and gentle-man) to serve others and their Lord. You are a blessing. Thanks again, Louise Hester
Thank you...As president of the Women’s Fellowship I would like to thank everyone involved in our new “Community Market”. Many shared their cooking skills, a few their musical talent, and several their unique craftsmanship. It was a wonderful day of fellowship and a very successful fundraiser. A special thank you to the Willing Workers for organizing the event. Again, thanks to all who participated in any way. Louise Hester
Join in on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 for Oak Grove’s
Adult Bible study inspired by the movie,
“God’s Not Dead”. The King’s Teens & ‘Tweens are also studying this
in their new room from 6:00-7:30. You don’t want to miss it!
OCTOBEr IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH
It is a time to honor and say thank you to our pastor, Matthew, as
he inspires us to grow in our relationship with God through Jesus
Christ.
Here are some ideas for how you can let Matthew know he is
loved and appreciated.
Pray daily for Matthew.
Invite others to hear him preach.
Ask Matthew what you could do to assist him with his ministry
and to lighten his load of responsibility.
Invite him to a dinner or party with your family and friends.
Support him with your attendance, participation and financial
resources.
Remember him with a gift on his birthday, at Christmas or
other special occasions.
Just a brief note or phone call of gratitude for Matthew can
give him a lift and positive encouragement for his 24-7 job do-
ing whatever he can to make life better for you.
During this month, do something for our pastor to show apprecia-
tion for his ministry.

WE WALK BECAUSE THEY WALK
Over 1 billion of the world’s population is undernourished,
more than 1 of every 7 people on the planet. Everyday
16,000 children die worldwide from hunger. Hunger and
malnutrition kill more people than AIDS, tuberculosis, and
malaria combined.
Sunday, October 19, 2014
Children & Adults can be walkers. Enjoy a good
walk through Old Salem for a good cause. If you
would like to walk or make a monetary donation,
please see Robin or Hayley Wolfington.
