ATTACHEMENTS

LESSON 1

Lessonplanform Based on the lessonplan on OnzeLes.nl

To lower the treshhold for pupils to give feedback. To experience how valuable pupil-teacher feedback can be.To hear from pupils what they think are characteristics of a good lesson. To serve as a starting point of a structural feedbackprocess.

Goals

Pupils often know exactly how a lesson could be better.Pupils need to know the importance of feedback, before you make pupils capable of giving feedback.Asking pupils to give feedback and involving them in the designing of the lessons, improves their learningachievements.Pupils will take it more seriously when they experience ownership over the feedbackmethod.

Why

The teacher introduces OnzeLes to his class and has a conversation about possible improvements. How

Register an account with OnzeLes via app.onzeless.nl Make a new group.Go through the introductory statements.Prepare green and red post-its (one of both for each pupil).

Prep

50 minutesTime

Pupils need a smartphone (or other device) with internet access. If a few pupils don't have this, don't worry. To pupils can vote on the same device. Be clear on when pupils can and cannot use their phone.Stress throughout the entire process that you do this to improve the lessons together.

Tips

THE LESSON:

Time Sub aims teacher activities learner activities lesson organization:- indiv./pair/group work- learning tools and media- special circumstances

5 min Welcome Pupils The teacher stands at the door and welcomes the pupils into the classroom.

The pupils enter the classroom and take their seats.

PowerPoint: Slide 1

3 min Introduce the Goals/Programme The teacher explains that today’s session is about the pupils giving feedback about the English lessons so far.

Stress why the opinion of pupils matter (they themselves know best how they prefer to learn).

The teacher then explains the programme:

- Statements- Characteristics of a good

The pupils listen. PowerPoint: Slide 2 + 3

lesson- Feedback time

7 min Statements The teacher explains that they will be looking at 3 statements now.

The teacher asks the pupils to stand up. During each statement each pupil has to decide if they agree (stay standing) or disagree (sit down). The teacher shows a statement and makes sure that pupils have time to think.

The teacher makes sure that everyone answers at the same time so all the pupils give their own answer (if you don’t agree, sit down in 3.. 2.. 1)

The teacher asks pupils who agree with the statement to explain why. The statements have been formulated in such a way that it turns out that:

1) Pupils know what feedback is.2) Pupils want things to be

different.3) But that Pupils rarely give

feedback.

The teacher addresses this issue and explains that this is the reason why

The pupils follow the instructions of the teacher.

they’ll be using OnzeLes.

5 min Let pupils think about the important characteristics of a lesson

The teacher hands out green and red post-its. On the green ones pupils write (at least) three characteristics of a good lesson, on the red one at least 3 characterises of a bad lesson. Goal: Get pupils to think about the topic and involve them.

The pupils write down the characteristics.

PowerPoint: Slide 9

10 min Choosing the 10 most important characteristics of a good lesson.

Goal: The group decides on 5 – 10 important characteristics of a good lesson.

The teacher writes ‘positive characteristics’ on the board with enough space to write around.

The teacher fills the board by asking pupils what they’ve written down.Positive characteristics can be written down immediately.

Negative characteristics should be formulated in a positive way. (You don’t like it when the explanation is long, so what would you like? … A short, clear explanation. Great, we’ll write that down!)

Do not argue with the pupils about the characteristics they name, this step is solely meant for collecting.

The pupils share their characteristics and vote on the 10 most important characteristics.

Asking a question for clarity is fine.

It is probable that more than 10 positive characteristics will appear on the board. When that happens, try to make a selection. For example by giving each pupil two votes.

5 min Fill App The teacher adds the 5 – 10 most important positive characteristics as feedback topics to the group which they have made during the preperations in the OnzeLes web-app.

The web-app can be found via app.onzeless.nl (find further instructions in the app).

The pupils chat while the teacher fills in the app.

5 min Pupils vote The teachers creates a new poll and if necessary adds open questions (see instructions in the Onzeless app).

The teacher then asks pupils to be careful while voting (slide 12). The pupils need to fill in the same amount of tips as tops. This time the teacher asks them to fill in two tops and two tips.

The teacher asks pupils to get out their smartphone (or other device), to go to app.onzeles.nl, to fill in the poll-

The pupils listen to the instructions of the teacher about the voting. They then get out their phone and vote following the instructions in the app.

pin and to give feedback (pupils receive further instructions in the app).

7 min Poll resultsThe teacher shows the poll-results on the screen.

Ask pupils to split up into pairs and think of what the teacher could do to improve for the most important characteristics.

Have an open conversation with the pupils:

- Ask pupils what they think is going well.

- Ask what you and the pupils could do differently.

The pupils look at the poll results, split up into pairs and talk to the teacher.

PowerPoint: Slides 14 and 15

3 min Rounding off The teacher asks the pupils what they think about giving feedback this way. Make sure you keep up the pace.Optional: the teacher tells the pupils when they are planning on using the app again.

The teacher thanks the pupils for their open attitudee and constructive feedback.

The pupils listen to the teacher and share their opinion. They leave the room.
