Challenges Are Enormous but We Take it One Day at a Time

Whenever I am preparing to travel home to Nigeria, I always tell myself this time around I will travel light with only my carryon bag because I know how difficult it is to travel with a lot of valuable loads. Not only that a lot of loads are heavy and slows one down, but I would have the rugged roads and security challenges to think about. However, when the time draws near for me to make the trip, I always receive requests from family members and friends that is hard to turn down. Requests like, “Father, could you get this or that for me when you are coming,” or “Please Father, take this to my grandmother in the village in Nigeria because she really needs it…” etc. To make a long story short, I end up taking more luggage than I had intended for my trip. My last trip I had four check-in bags and I must confess that it was inconveniencing but those gifts put a lot of smiles on many faces when they were received.

On our journey of faith, we want to try as much as we can to travel light, to let go of worldly possessions, and to live simply in the footsteps of our master and savior, Jesus Christ. He said to the rich man, “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasures in heaven; then come, follow me.” It is a clear and succinct message from the master, but does that mean Jesus had disdain for worldly possessions? Obviously not, because we know how much his ministry benefited from the generosity of people especially Mary Magdalene, Mary Joseph and Salome. They provided financial support for Jesus and the twelve which allowed them the freedom to go forth and spread the good news. These generous women were able to help build the Kingdom of God with the possessions that they had.

Clearly, the problem is not so much in the possessing of these material goods but how they were gotten and the attitude we have towards these goods. The aim is to make sure these goods don’t

become gods for us and that they don’t stand in our way of having a good and loving relationship with God and neighbor. We ought therefore, to develop an attitude of gratitude towards God for blessing us with little or abundance and how we can use his blessings to build his kingdom here in our parish and beyond.

We are living in dark times in the history of humanity, and this is in no way the end of times, but it is truly a difficult and strange time in our history. The good news is, it is no mistake that God has put each and everyone of us in these dark times. You and I are here at this time in history for a special reason. He knows we can be the difference that the world so desperately needs to tackle the challenges of an epidemic, poverty, hunger, homelessness, natural disasters, and war.

All these issues I have highlighted are quite a heavy load to carry. For example,it is not easy to alleviate world hunger and I do understand how difficult it is to carry a lot of loads. However, the joy that comes from sacrificing for the good of others is nothing compared to the discomfort we may feel for a time. Jesus invites us all today to make use of our blessings, material or spiritual, and to tackle some of the challenges in our local communities one day at a time.

Lord, supply us your grace to do what needs to be done especially when our strength and ability fail us… Amen.

God bless, Fr. Theodore Agba

Dear St. Teresa,I asked my mother about this, and she said to write a letter to you. I want to know why God made the sky blue. Can you answer this for me?

Wondering 6 year old

Dear Wondering,What an intriguing question and thank you for writing! I suppose I could give you all of the scientific reasons for the sky’s color, but you’ll be learning that inschool in the next year or so, and I’m sure that will be exciting!I also like to wonder why God created the laws of science to make the light molecules scatter the way they do. We know that the entire universe, including the beautiful blue sky, was made for the Glory of God, so I think it has something to do with that.We tend to imagine blue as a peaceful color. Think of things in nature that are also blue - a robin’s egg, spring hydrangeas, bluebirds, the ocean. For years, artists have painted our Holy Mother with blue clothing. When I think of these beautiful blue things, I become happy.Perhaps when God was creating the earth, He knew that the color blue would make us feel peaceful and happy, and He wanted another way to remind us that He loved us. As He created the sky, He made the laws of nature work the way they do just so that every time we looked up, we would be reminded to be happy because God loves us.

Sincerely,Teresa

Why was the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary instituted?

This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful.

ACIPRENSA.COM
