Maui Preparatory Academy is fully accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of

Schools & Colleges (WASC).

‘OHANA GIVING REPORT 2012-20132012-2013 ‘OHANA GIVING REPORT

Aloha Maui Prep ‘Ohana,

What a privilege it is for me, as Maui Prep’s new Head of School, to join such

a remarkably gifted and dedicated group of Maui Prep supporters. Though we

have already begun to push ahead to address the needs of Maui Prep for

2013/2014, it is very important to me that I have this opportunity to thank each

of you for your efforts in support of our school’s mission enriching the lives of

our students and our West Maui community.

The incredible success of our fundraising efforts over the 2012/2013

school year were very much due to the outstanding leadership of our

own Cathi Minami, Stacy Casco, Michele Pupunu, and Board Trustee and

Development Committee Chair, Lisa Gibson. I want to thank the stellar leadership of our Maui Prep Fund

volunteer Chairpersons Paula Lair and Cliff Smith and their team of committed volunteer parent captains.

In its eighth year, the Maui Prep Fund continued to set new records in donor participation: 94% of our

Parents, 100% of our Faculty and Staff, and 100% of our Board of Trustees made gifts.

Under the leadership of volunteers Corie Bluh, Jingle Bell Ball Chair, and Kim Zeigler, Event

Coordinator, and their entire group of dedicated parent volunteers, the Jingle Bell Rock ’n’ Roll Ball

(December 2012) was our most fun school gala to date! Special thanks also goes to our outstanding

auctioneer, Maui Prep parent, Warren Gibson. For the hugely successful “Tom” Golf Scramble, thanks goes

to the leadership team of Board Trustees Volunteer Chairs Chuck Bergson and Tom Donovan as well as

Tournament Director Kim Zeigler.

All told, Maui Prep’s 2012/2013 fundraising efforts raised a total of $733,536. This is outstanding given

Maui’s still challenging economic climate. Congratulations to all!

Maui Prep celebrated several other achievements in 2012/2013. Maui Prep placed first in the Middle

School Science Olympiad Regional competition, winning the Mayor’s award for highest scoring team at

the competition (which was even better than any of the high school scores!), and placed fourth in the

State competition. In the State National History Day competition, 19 Maui Prep students submitted 12

entries of 30 possible for Maui; 3 of these entries were selected to advance in the national competition in

Washington, D.C. In the MIL (Maui’s interscholastic athletic league), Maui Prep sent student athletes to

State Championships in Cross Country, Swimming and Track & Field. Maui Prep students brought home a

school record 7 medals from the MIL Swimming Championships! Maui Prep continued its annual tradition

of outstanding drama productions with "Flat Stanley, JR," performed by the Lower School Drama Club,

and the Broadway musical "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown," performed by the Middle School Drama

class under the direction of Ms. Vania Jerome, our Director of Performing Arts.

Years from now, when we look back upon the accomplishments of the 2012/2013 school year, I think

our ‘ohana will recognize this moment as the time we secured our foundation in preparation for a major

leap into our future. In November 2012, the Board of Trustees approved and initiated the Strategic Plan

for 2013-2017. And, in the spring of 2013, Maui Prep took the first initial steps towards developing a master

campus plan that will help us define the parameters of our community for the next decade or more.

In my early immersive moments in the varied cultures of Hawaii, I have come to appreciate the value

of lokomaika‘i, to act always with generosity and kindness towards others. It seems to me this not only

permeates our ‘ohana, it helps to explain Maui Prep’s remarkable journey to date and the bright future in

front of us. On behalf of Maui Prep’s students and teachers, thank you again for all you have done, and

thank you in advance for all you will continue to do.

Mahalo,

Jonathan L. Silver, PhD Head of School

FROM THE HEADMASTER

SCHOOL MISS ION

Maui Preparatory Academy provides a

superior educational program in a safe,

nurturing, and stimulating environment.

We promote character development,

community service, and the values of

sustainability. We foster a love of

learning while instilling academic

excellence, artistic expression, athletic

achievement and the skills necessary for

success in the 21st century.

‘OHANA GIVING REPORT 2012-20132012-2013 ‘OHANA GIVING REPORT

May 31, 2013 marked the fourth

graduating class of Maui Preparatory

Academy. In front of family and friends,

16 graduates proudly walked across the

stage that showcased the picturesque

view that saw them through the many

years of their educational experience.

Friends and family were seated while

being entertained by the “7AM” Band

and former Head of School, George C.

Baker, proudly gave the welcome

address. The class invited Kahu David

Kapaku to give the Commencement

Address and while it was filled with

humor, it was also a very insightful and

challenging speech directed to the

graduates. Senior Class President, Slater

Trout, presented the Senior Class gift,

a refurbished podium with a dedication

plaque. Valedictorian, Troy Otto, and

Salutatorian, Mikayla Head, both gave

tremendous speeches that truly exemplified

the character of the class of 2013. The Faculty Merit Award, presented by Principal Ryan

Kirkham, was awarded to Chloe Schaefer. Senior Class advisors, Chris Border and Vania

Jerome, presented the diplomas. College Counselor Keenan Reader announced the

colleges 15 of the graduates would be attending and the over 1.4 million dollars of grant

and scholarship offers.

Our love and congratulations will go with the members of the class of 2013.

We will miss you!

Maui Prep Students Present Discoveries toLeading Astronomers in California

Davyana San Miguel, graduating class of 2013, and

Sydney Gilbert, graduating class of 2015, dedicated a year

to the “Classification of Compact Submillimeter Sources in

the Planck Archive.” Collaborating with students from

around the country for several months, Sydney and

Davyana worked to use archived data from cutting edge

space based telescopes to locate and identify a

variety of astronomical objects including distant

dusty galaxies, super massive black holes, and

nebula. Together with faculty member Chris Border, Davyana and Sydney presented

a research poster to the 3,000+ astronomers at the 221st meeting of the American

Astronomical Society in Long Beach, California. In addition, they were able to attend

several talks and workshops on current research in various areas of astronomy.

What a fabulous opportunity for these two Maui Prep students!

Pueo Athletes Finish StrongOne of the hurdles a small school faces

is fielding athletic teams. While the school is

continuing to grow in this area, Maui Prep

produces some exceptional individual athletes.

In the 2012-2013 school year, both

Skylar Hirsch (jr.) and Danielle Jefferies (so.)

were MIL champions in swimming; Sky

Hirsch ended the season with a 3rd place

win at States and Sebastian Buenrostro

Gallimore was a MIL Bronze medalist in

swimming. Xavier Damo (sr.) Caleb

Bermudez (so.) and Danielle Jefferies (so.)

all qualified for States in Cross-Country.

The Cross-Country team finished fifth in the

MIL as well. Senior, Troy Otto, also qualified

for States in the High Jump in Track & Field.

These are just a few of our outstanding

athletes. Many students from the Lower

School to the Upper School are also involved

in community sports, and we are excited to

see some of the up and coming athletes

bring their skills and knowledge to athletics at Maui Prep. Fans are always welcome at our

many sporting events, so come and cheer on a Pueo!

‘OHANA GIVING REPORT 2012-20132012-2013 ‘OHANA GIVING REPORT

Your Gift Impacts the Lives of Our Students! Thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers, the 2012-2013 Maui Prep Annual Fund was a

complete success. With 94% of our parents giving, 100% of our faculty & staff, and 100% of

our Board of Trustees, we were able to raise $169,467! The Maui Prep Annual Fund is

one of Maui Prep’s most important fundraisers and one that requires participation from

everyone who cares about the success of Maui Prep. This is one time during the year that

the entire ‘Ohana comes together and is reminded that the quality of educational programs

and faculty is dependent on bridging the gap between tuition and the actual cost of

operating Maui Prep.

This accomplishment would not have been possible without the help of volunteers

Paula Lair and Cliff Smith, who took on the task as Maui Prep Fund Chairs; the leadership

of Michele Pupunu as the Faculty and Staff Chair; and Ray Chin as the Board of Trustees

Chair. We thank grandparent volunteers Margaret Cawley and Tom Best who accepted the

position of Grandparent Chairs.

Maui Prep relies on Ohana volunteers, and we thank Sarah Burns (mom of Leah &

Cameron) who will lead the charge and chair the Maui Prep Annual Fund 2013-2014.

Pueo Playhouse Presents: You're A GoodMan, Charlie Brown

Maui Preparatory Academy was thrilled to bring a

two-time Tony Award-winning musical, You’re A Good Man,

Charlie Brown, to its Pueo Playhouse. Under the big tent on

the Maui Prep campus, the Middle School Drama class

entertained audiences with songs like “My New Philosophy”

and “Suppertime,” with music and lyricswritten by Clark M.

Gesner. Based on the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M.

Schultz, the musical brought Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy

and the rest of the gang to life. Sound and lights were

designed and engineered by Maui Prep Middle and Upper

School students. Parent volunteers designed and

constructed props, sets, and costumes. This production

was directed by Maui Prep Director of Performing Arts,

Vania Jerome.

THE ALLIANCE TO IMPROVE MAUIFormed in 2005, the objective of the Alliance to Improve Maui (AIM) is to build and

maintain a premier Realtor network that provides financial support for targeted West

Maui community nonprofit organizations that focus on addressing critical community

enhancements. Maui Prep is a beneficiary of AIM’s financial support. For the real estate

community, Maui Prep has become an essential source for agents to address their clients’

needs in education and community socialization in West Maui.

The AIM program has also become a vehicle for the real estate community to exercise

its philanthropic commitment to the community. Upon the successful purchase or sale of

a property, AIM agents have made gift donations to Maui Prep in the name of their clients.

In some cases, this generous overture has resulted in Realtor clients matching these

donations. To date, over $1,000,000 has been raised from this charitable program.

Warren & Annabelle’s Magic!

Each year in April, Maui Prep honors a man who inspired us

all. Tom Rosenquist had a dream of a school for the children of

West Maui, and he made it a reality. In just four years, Tom

Rosenquist gave more than $1 million in gifts to Maui Prep and

inspired others to give. Each year we honor Tom Rosenquist’s

legacy at the annual Tom Rosenquist Legacy Golf Tournament.

Thank you to Tournament Chairs Tom Donovan, Chuck Bergson

and Tournament Director Kim Zeigler.
