ABOUT THE FRONTIER CONFERENCE

The Frontier Conference was organized in 1935 with four of the eight existing teams as charter members (Montana Tech, Montana Western, MSU-Northern and Rocky Mountain College). Carroll College joined in 1938. For a 10-year peri-od, from 1974 - 1984, the University of Great Falls competed in the conference and rejoined in 1999.

The conference added Lewis-Clark State College of Lewiston, Idaho, and Westminster College of Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1998. Eastern Oregon University of La Grande, Ore., joined in 2008 as an associate member for football only. In 2012, the league welcomed Dickinson State University as a full member. Dickinson left after the 2013-14 season to join the North Star Conference. Southern Oregon University joined as an associate member for football only in 2012. College of Idaho joined the conference in the Fall of 2014 as an associate member in football only. Westminster College moved to NCAA Division II status and left the conference after the 2014-15 season.

The purpose of the Frontier Conference is to encourage, promote, sponsor and control athletic competition among participating colleges as an integral part of the total educational process. With their motto, “Promoting Academic & Athletic Excellence,” members compete for conference championships in: men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s cross country, football, men’s & women’s golf, men’s & women’s indoor/outdoor track & field, women’s soccer & volleyball.

Any contest between two Frontier Conference schools will always provide specta-tors with the excitement and thrills that can be experienced through intercollegiate athletic conference. Many of our games are broadcast through local radio and via school webcasts.

ABOUT THE NAIA

NAIA FACTS• 65,000 student-athletes• 25 national championships• More than 250 colleges and universities

and 21 conferences• $500 million in athletic scholarships

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., is a governing body of small athletics programs that are dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall college educa-tional experience. The student-athlete is the center of all NAIA experiences. Each year more than 60,000 student-ath-letes have the opportunity to play college sports at NAIA member institutions.

The seed of the NAIA began 76 years ago with the tipoff of a men’s basketball tournament in Kansas City that has become the longest running event in college basketball. Out of the tournament grew the NAIA, an association that has been an innovative leader. The NAIA was the first collegiate athletics association to invite historically black institutions into membership and the first to sponsor both men’s and women’s national championships.

In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is com-mitted to the true spirit of competition through five core values.

In 2010, the association opened the doors to the NAIA Eligibility Center, where prospective student-athletes are evaluat-ed for academic and athletic eligibility. It delivers on the NAIA’s prom-ise of integrity by leveling the playing field, guiding student-athlete success, and ensuring fair competition.

In 2014, the NAIA became the first college athletics association to offer official events, the NAIA Sports Showcases, for prospective student-athletes with professional athletic assessments and NAIA coaches on-site.

In 2001, former EOU Director of Athletics Rob Cashell over-saw over $3 million worth of renovation projects at EOU, which included an expanded fitness center and private team locker rooms, a new football practice field, newly con-structed press boxes, a booster suite, and restrooms and concessions at Community Stadium.

On Sept. 13, 2003, the Mountaineers hit the gridiron against Menlo College in the newly-refurbished stadium and ulti-mately fell by a 24-21 margin. Since the stadium’s renova-tion, EOU has held a 36-32 (.529) record at home.

GAME ONE: COLLEGE OF IDAHO AT EOU (8/25/18)

MOUNTAINEERS WIN THRILLING HOME OPENER 24-21 OVER C OF I

LA GRANDE, Ore. – On a night that started with a ribbon cutting ceremony to signify the first football game on the new artificial turf at Community Stadium, the Eastern Oregon football team defeated rival College of Idaho 24-21.

“This is what we have been working for since last year,” said head coach Tim Camp. “I am very proud of the coaches who work extremely hard and who love this great university. The players believed and we were able to fight back and make plays when we needed it.”

This game had it all. Big plays from both sides on special teams, offense, and defense sparked an entertaining matchup to open up the Mounties 2018 campaign.

“There was no other option but to win,” said Camp. “The administration and this community has done so much for our program with the best field in the Pacific Northwest and we wanted to thank them with a win and show all the fans that we are resilient as a program.”

The Mountaineers struck first with a one-yard touchdown run by running back Victor Dias. The drive started on the College of Idaho’s 40-yard line after a punt was partially blocked by the special teams unit.

College of Idaho responded with a TD drive of their own, which would ultimately account for all scoring in the first half that featured two stout defenses.

The second half started fast with an electric drive by EOU ending in six points. Dias recorded his second TD of the game with a 22-yard sprint up the middle of the field. Quarterback Kai Quinn continued to work efficiently, hitting his targets on multiple plays to set up the Dias run.

On the next drive, a key roughing the passer penalty erased what would have been a third down stop for the EOU defense, and C of I capitalized with a TD a few plays later to tie the game at 14-14.

The Mountaineers offense was clicking all night, and they orchestrated a field goal drive at the end of the 3rd quarter highlighted by an incredible one-handed catch by wide receiver TJ Hancock that took them to the red zone. Soon after, Quinn produced a gritty TD run, absorbing and fighting through contact on third and goal on the three-yard line, putting the score at 24-14.

With the Mounties up by 10 and about six minutes left in the game, C of I’s Bell Russo blocked Nathan Harden’s punt, and the Coyotes recovered it and returned it for a TD to make it a three-point game.

C of I got the ball back with two minutes left after Harden pinned them deep on their own nine-yard line. The Yotes connected on a few passes downfield, however the drive ended in a turnover on downs at the EOU 43-yard line. One QB kneel from Quinn iced it.

This game was characterized by momentum changes and big plays, but the third down defense of the Mountain-eers shined brightest, holding the Coyotes’ offense to 5-14, or about a 35% conversion rate.

Another bright spot came from defensive back Zackary Jacobs, who picked off two passes in the game, both coming within about three minutes from each other. Linebacker Gunnar Blix also impressed, leading the game with 10 tackles.

Penalties hurt the defensive unit, but other than that it was an impressive performance holding the Coyote of-fense to 14 points, with seven coming from the punt block return. The Coyote TD in the third quarter happened due to a roughing the passer penalty on third down extending the drive.

Quinn had a great showing going 26-for-47 for 326 yards, leading the EOU attack that totaled 452 yards of offense. The ground game finished with 126 yards and all 3 TDs. The unit as a whole tallied 157 more yards than C of I, and went 9-for-18 on third down.

GAME TWO: SOUTHERN OREGON AT EOU (9/1/18)

EOU FOOTBALL FALLS TO NO. 4 SOU 32-13

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon football team battled the No. 4-ranked Southern Oregon Raiders Saturday afternoon at Community Stadium, falling 32-13.

After the Mountaineers took a 10-0 lead early on, the Raiders scored 29 unanswered points. The biggest differ-ence in the game was the disparity in rushing yards. Southern Oregon out-rushed EOU 236-39, averaging 4.8 yards per carry and finding the end zone on the ground three times. SOU also won the turnover battle 3-0, one of them being a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception that led to a TD the next play. The first quarter started as a defensive battle with punts on the first few drives for each team. Punter Nathan Harden switched the field in a big way with a 79-yard punt in the first quarter. The next drive for EOU, a facemask penalty by the Raiders kept the chains moving on 3rd and 14 that ended in a missed FG by Harden 19 yards out.

The SOU rushing attack was working in the first quarter, gaining 71 yards on 13 rushes. They would go on to run for 95 yards on 23 carries in the half.

The Mountaineers first drive in the second quarter started with a first down on a scramble from quarterback Kai Quinn, and was extended on a defensive holding call on third down. Running back Victor Dias sprinted up the middle for 12 yards on the following play. Quinn then fired a 32-yard strike down to the 2-yard line, and followed that up with a fade pass to wide receiver Brenden Kelly for a touchdown.

Next drive, an SOU offside penalty negated a missed field goal from Harden. Harden did not squander his second chance, and hit a 34-yard field goal the next play. Both scoring drives by EOU in the first half stemmed from Raider penalties; a defensive holding and an offside. Southern Oregon finished the first half with eight penalties for 86 yards.

SOU had their most impressive first half drive right at the end of the second quarter. With one minute left in the half, they drove the field for a touchdown. As time expired, quarterback Wyatt Hutchinson scrambled into the end zone to get the Raiders on the board. The Mounties went into the half holding onto a three-point lead, 10-7.

The Raiders came out determined to run the football in the third quarter and got down to the EOU 27-yard line on nine runs. Kicker Marcus Montano converted a 44-yard FG to tie the game at 10 apiece.

The next possession for the Mountaineers ended in an interception by SOU defensive back Tyler Dean. The Raid-ers capitalized off the turnover, with running back Ray Vega rushing for a 53-yard touchdown. Montano would miss the PAT, as SOU took a 16-10 lead.

The Mountaineer offense was out of sorts the entire third quarter. The Raider pass rush forced Quinn out of the pocket multiple times, and the Mounties only converted two first downs in the quarter.

Southern Oregon could not be stopped on the ground in the second half. They drove right down the field on their next possession for a TD to make it 23-10. Hutchinson ran for his second TD of the game, a scramble from 18 yards out. SOU gained 135 yards via the run in the third quarter alone.

On the next drive, Quinn took a shot at the Southern Oregon 45 and lost the football, which was recovered by Raider linebacker Devvon Gage who took it 55 yards for another touchdown. The lead increased to 29-10 after a failed 2-point conversion attempt from SOU.

The offense regained some of its composure to start the fourth quarter, driving all the way down to the SOU 11 yard line. The drive would stall there, but Harden converted his second FG of the game, this time from 28 yards out.

Right when it looked like the offense was finding its rhythm, a pass from Quinn tipped off the intended receiver’s hands, and was intercepted by SOU defensive back AJ Cooper. The turnover was converted into a 42-yard FG by Montano, putting the score at 32-13, where it would ultimately stay.

Quinn connected with Kelly again for 83 yards late in the fourth quarter, however the Harden FG attempt was blocked by the Raiders.

An injury to starting quarterback Kai Quinn completely flipped the script of the night. The Mountaineers led Tech 17-7 when Quinn left the game, but the Orediggers jumped on the opportunity to score 17 unanswered points after the injury.
