QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
Do you use qualitative methods for your
research?
How do you collect/analyze/use your
qualitative data?
What are you interested in learning today?
WHAT CAN NVIVO DO FOR YOU?
WHY USE SOFTWARE?
WHERE TO START?
See Adam Stone in the Technology Learning Center (Mashburn 102 or
501-450-3400) to reserve one of two nVivo laptops.
USING NVIVO: AN EXAMPLE
Ways NVIVO was used in
dissertation research
to aid in data analysis

Multiple-site Case Study
Purpose: To Explore the Role of University Leaders in Civic Engagement
Data Collection
25 interviews (semi-structured)
Strategic plans/documents at five HE institutions
Form 990s at five HE institutions
MULTIPLE-SITE CASE STUDY
Primarily interviews and strategic plans
Form 990s (numbers) not useful with NVIVO given qualitative focus
Charts, graphs, word frequency, and models used
NVIVO AIDED WITH ANALYSIS
REASONS TO USE NVIVO
Assists with viewing the data more holistically by helping the researcher
look word frequency and common linkages in data
Provides researchers for generating multiple graphics and charts that
tell the story more effectively
Allows researcher to use NVIVO throughout the research process…for
LEAD students I recommend using it in the QP process so all data is in
the system early. This allows a more thorough use of the software.
KEY ASPECTS THAT CAME OUT OF DATA
I used these graphics to look at the ideas arising
frequently in the data. By looking at these I was able to
develop the themes more thoroughly.
WORD CLOUD (FREQUENCY)
This is a word frequency cloud of the 50 most frequently
used words in one of my data sets. It is a creative way of
seeing which words appear most often.
WORD FREQUENCY (TABLE)
Word Count Weighted % Similar Words
community 189 2.55 communicate, communities, community
students 112 1.51 students
people 88 1.19 people
college 87 1.17 college, colleges
help 53 0.72 help, helped, helpful, helping
educational 51 0.69 educate, educated, educating, education, educational,

needs 49 0.66 need, needed, needing, needs
engagement 48 0.65 engage, engaged, engagement, engagements, engaging
civic 42 0.57 civic
place 40 0.54 place, placed, places

This is a word frequency chart of the 15 most frequently used words in one of my data sets. It is
a helpful way of delineating the common words. Through the software, you can filter out the “to,
the, and other words mentioned often but that are not significant.”
GRAPH OF CORRESPONDING DATA
Through NVIVO, you can create graphs that compare data in various ways.
OTHER GRAPHICS
This is another
way to look at
most frequently
used words.
To access NVIVO, see Adam Stone or Ashton Crabtree in the Technology
Learning Center within the College of Education, Mashburn 102. The
College of Education maintains two laptops with NVIVO on them. You can
check out the computers for use. Be sure to have a jump drive on hand so
you can save your data on it.
