    ABOUT

    ISVRUniversity ofSouthampton,UKwww.isvr.soton.ac.uk

The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) was founded in 1963 and is one of theleading research centres for acoustics worldwide. Two of its principal functions are graduate-levelteaching, and research in sound, vibration and related areas. ISVR works to improve understandingof acoustic and vibrational phenomena as they affect the well-being of the community and thequality of engineering products, and to train students to apply their expertise to the solution ofpractical problems. The Institute is unusual as a University Department (School) in that externalresearch contracts and grants provide over two-thirds of its financial support. This comes fromindustry, research councils, Government departments, health authorities and from overseas. TheISVR has grown over the years so that there are now 30 academic staff as well as a large number

of research staff and students working in four research groups:

Dynamics Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Human Sciences Signal Processing and Control

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSEThis course is designed for Engineers who are faced with noise and vibration control problemsto solve. The basic principles behind the subject will be introduced and then various advancedtopics will be discussed. All these topics will be underpinned with basic theory, with a focus on

the underlying physical principles. This should ensure that the course delegates will be able totackle their problems by applying first principles rather than trial and error. There will beadequate time in the course schedule for the delegates to interact with each other and theinstructors to gain maximum benefit in the time available.(Course Certificates from ISVR, University of Southampton)

    ABOUT THE FACULTIESMIKE BRENNANPROFESSOR

Mike is a Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of

Sao Paulo (UNESP), Ilha Solteira, Brazil. He joined UNESP in 2010 from the Institute of Sound andVibration Research, University of Southampton, UK, where he had worked since 1995. MichaelBrennan has a wide-range of interests in acoustics and vibration including the vibrations of rotatingmachinery, non-linear vibrations, vibro-acoustics, active and passive control of sound and vibration, energy harvesting and biomimetics. Additionally he has been a consultant for several companies in theUK and overseas, advising on vibration and acoustic testing methods, control measures and design. Hehas published over 150 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and has supervised 30 PhDstudents to completion. He graduated from the Open University with first class honours in 1987,received his MSc in Sound and Vibration Studies in 1991 and his PhD in 1995, both from the Instituteof Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton.

    PHIL JOSEPHPROFESSOR

Phil is a Professor of Engineering Acoustics at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR),University of Southampton, UK. From 1990 to 1994 he worked in Australia on low frequency activesonar. He returned to the ISVR in1994 and worked on the active control of fan tones from aircraftturbofan engines, and then on shallow water acoustics. His main current research area is in Gas TurbineNoise, but he has broader interests in many areas of acoustics. He has published over 50 papers ininternational peer-reviewed journals and has supervised 20 PhD students to completion.

    Dr. MANIVASAGAM

Dr. S. Manivasagam is the Chief Delivery Officer for Onward Technologies Limited, Pune. For the past

24 years, he has been working on New Product Design and Development with an integrated SimulationDriven Design approach. His vast product design and development experience includes power train, automotive, compressor, HVAC & off-highway domains. He has worked on various noise reductionprograms for compressors, engines of automotive & industrial exhaust systems. He regularly visitsvarious engineering institutions & shares his experiences on systematic New Product Developmentprocesses, Noise and Vibration Control and Computer Aided Engineering with the faculty and students.
