Denver College of Nursing (DCN) constantly strives for greatness, and quality instructors is such a huge piece of that puzzle. This winter DCN recruited yet another great instructor for the SIM lab. Debbie Skeen is a new addition to DCN, and a vetran nurse with some serious experience and knowledge to guide students toward success. She has a professional background encompassing emergency nursing, flight nursing, critical care, shipboard nursing, labor & delivery, trauma research, home health, travel nursing, urgent care, school nursing and volunteering overseas for Operation Smile. The vast majority of her nursing experience lies in emergency nursing. She explained, " I find the field of emergency nursing to be interesting, challenging, and rewarding. The combination of being able to positively impact someone's life when they are at their most vulnerable, and work closely with a multidisciplinary team to meet unforeseen challenges, is an extraordinary experience." When asked about what drew her into nursing Debbie said, "I think there were a lot of reasons why I went into nursing. I enjoy working with people and helping those in need. I also found subjects such as biology fascinating, and had a couple aunts who were nurses. To be quite honest, I knew it would give me a path in which I could support myself, but I don’t think I realized the opportunities and personal growth it would bring into my life. I came to the Denver College of Nursing after completing my Master's in Nursing Education. In graduate school, my practicum and evidence-based practice project involved using simulation to improve the confidence of nurses new to emergency nursing, so I am very excited to be in the Sim Lab. I was also drawn to the supportive environment for students and the Global Health Program at DCN."
A memorable moment for Debbie was, "The first weekend I worked as a new diploma school graduate was in the emergency room at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. It was a Level 1 Trauma Center and there was a riot in the prison at Pontiac, Illinois, and a motorcycle rally at a nearby city. It was incredibly busy and the nurse who oriented me was amazingly calm and organized in her critical thinking and ability to set priorities, all the while treating each patient with kindness and empathy. She is one example of the great teachers I have benefited from throughout my career. For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to receive her instruction, hang in there, you are in for a treat. She exemplifies all that she says she loves about nursing, and the moments and people that inspired her. Thank you Debbie for your patience and positive attitude toward learning! Here's to a great first spring quarter for you, and all the students you teach.

Another break, another chance to serve internationally with Denver College of Nursing's Global Health Perspectives!
Over this last break DCN traveled to Peru to work with the Foundation for International Medical Relief for Children (FIMRC). This is an organization that focuses on sustainability, one of the pillars that comprise the foundations of Global Health Perspectives. With direction from FIMRC, GHP students focused care on health education and interaction. Sue Hammerton, the instructor on the trip excitedly esplained, "we had diarrhea bingo, flash card child development, healthy plate with velcro pictures, fruits representing gestational size of fetuses (from almonds to pineapples), just to name a few". She goes on to say, "now back home, when I think of the trip and the amazing DCN students- their energy, how well they worked together, their laughter, their observations- I smile".
Global Health Perspectives is a unique program that offers amazing opportunities. To join, just start coming to meetings and gain your service credits by volunteering. For questions please contact [email protected].
