Our Congratulations goes to Carmel Seaman and the wonderful staff at Pingelly health Service for being our front cover winners again. The happy snap captures the wonderful staff getting into the spirit of things for Pink Ribbon Day!

Here’s what Carmel had to say about their efforts for Breast Cancer fundraising: “We raised over $1000 having a morning tea, staff were involved in performing in a concert and staff donated prizes for the raffle. We had a fabulous time, looked really silly most of the time but we didn’t mind as it went to a great cause.”

Well they certainly looked like they enjoyed themselves, as well as raising some well needed funds for the fight against breast cancer, a great effort for a great cause...well done to all involved!

Well, we here at the Nursing Post realise the importance of ongoing education for nurses and health professionals to keep up to date with current advancements in patient care and treatment, as well as maintaining a sound knowledge base.

Hi everyone,

Nurses often ask why I am so enthusiastic about the Arabian Gulf. Well, that’s an easy one - I had such a fantastic time working there as a nurse that I want other nurses to have a similar experience. But there are really two main reasons. The incredible number and variety of opportunities means that we can find just about the perfect job for all our nurses. Secondly, it really can change your life.

The demand for healthcare services in the Gulf is growing rapidly due to population growth, a more affluent population seeking better healthcare and increasing rates of ‘lifestyle’ diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Fortunately the Arabian Gulf states have the financial resources to invest in building and expanding their hospitals.

In Saudi Arabia, the rate of development of new hospitals is staggering - around 50 are currently on the go as well as major expansions of existing top class facilities. Saudi generally develops and runs its own hospitals, the best of which are world-class institutions.

The UAE has established operating partnerships with some of the world’s finest healthcare institutions. From the USA, Johns Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic and from Europe, Vienna Medical University each have contracts with key hospitals.

In smaller Qatar, plans are well developed for a fabulous new hospital complex that aims to meld the best US healthcare practice with home grown Qatari expertise. These different operating philosophies can provide invaluable experience with different nursing practice systems.

A major impediment to further hospital growth in the Gulf is the shortage of good nurses.This means there are loads of great opportunities (see inside back cover for examples.) Because the number of specialties and grades of jobs in nursing is so large, it’s often quite difficult to find a vacant position that matches your skills and experience, let alone your aspirations for promotion. But in the Gulf, finding your perfect job is so much easier.

Many of our own nurses have done very well in terms of promotions and career development, at top rating hospitals offering world class nursing practice. It’s really gratifying to see them developing their high level clinical or managerial skills, which benefits them over their entire career.

But it’s not just about high flyers and great promotions. Many of the nurses we are most proud of are those who have achieved important personal goals or undergone a real personal transformation. One of our rather shy younger nurses had a great desire to travel. Seeing her after her Gulf experience

was a revelation - she had become a charming, worldly woman full of enthusiasm and warmth, with a network of friends that stretched across the globe and travel stories from places we’d hardly heard of.

I get a real kick when I see one of our nurses stride into our offices while on holidays, looking like a new person, refreshed and confident and often dripping in gold – what is it about nurses and gold from the Gulf’s souks?

Working in Arabia is all about a chance to spread your wings while helping your finances and doing something really useful for people who really need your expertise. For many nurses this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we’re proud to help nurses take it up and savour it.

Working in the Gulf is not for everyone. It can be quite difficult at first; you need grit to see you through the early days of your placement. But many nurses grow to love it and to embrace the warm Arab hospitality. Nurses with an amazing variety of motivations and aspirations can and do have positively rewarding experiences there.

So, my mission is simple – to find for each of our nurses their particular place in the sun.

Preceptors of the year use their own experiences to guide graduate nurses

Registered Nurses, Zelda Herbst and Brooke Greay were recently recognised

as St John of God Hospital Murdoch’s joint 2009 Preceptor of the Year for outstanding support and guidance to graduate nurses.

Brooke said her first-hand experience of the program as a graduate nurse at Murdoch four years ago helped her to be a positive influence as a preceptor.

She said, “I completed the 3 year graduate nurse program at Murdoch and felt being a preceptor was a great way to use my knowledge and experience to help our new graduates.

We provide support and guidance for graduates and students, but more importantly, we show them a model of nursing based on our values and culture that goes beyond technical nursing skills.”

She said, “There is a great vibe on the second floor and we have a great team – being a preceptor gives me the opportunity to pass on that culture to new nurses.”

Brooke’s manager Leonie McNeill said Brooke was the epitome of the ideal preceptor.

“She is enthusiastic and passionate with a great leadership style, and strong work ethic – these are the ideal characteristics to pass on to new nurses,” said Leonie.

Zelda Herbst has worked at the hospital for two and a half years and said she used her own experience to remember what would make it a comfortable and easy experience for the graduate nurse assigned to her.

“Having not been here long myself, I simply remembered what it was like for me to fit in and I just did my best to help the graduate feel like part of the team,” said Zelda.

“This is a lovely place to work, and we have a great team – I would stay here forever if I could!” she said.

Director of Nursing, Robyn Sutherland said graduate nurses at Murdoch started their career in a very supportive, nurturing and professional environment because of nurses like Zelda and Brooke.

“We have an outstanding team environment with highly skilled doctors, nurse managers, nurses and midwives who support each other and those new to nursing,” said Mrs Sutherland.

“In addition to this caring approach, Murdoch also promotes nursing as being a career with many pathways rather than being just a job,” she said.

Murdoch’s nurses and midwives are provided with a range of opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills to meet their career aspirations.

A New Qualification for Nurses in Cosmetic Medicine and Dermal Therapies Australia’s leading educators in dermal therapies have now expanded to offer Australia’s first postgraduate qualification in Cosmetic Nursing. Manish Shah from the Nursing Post talks to the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science about this much needed and highly sought after qualification.

The Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science (AACDS) has been delivering education in the field of cosmetic medicine and dermal therapies to nurses and beauty therapists since 2004. The college and its qualifications have gained significant recognition from the key societies/organisations in cosmetic medicine and beauty.

Originally, nurses undertook the same course as the beauty therapists, being the Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science. Nurses enrolling in the course, in particular RNs, often achieved recognition of prior learning for core units such as human biology and psychology. This, plus industry feedback, lead AACDS to develop and accredit a new course specifically for Registered and Enrolled Nurses.

The Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing is a government-accredited course, which focuses on the role of the RN and EN within a cosmetic medical practice and/or day hospital. AACDS Medical Director, Dr Jayson Oates reports, “Although Nurses have the foundation skills as a health care professional, they lack the specific skills and knowledge to apply to the field of cosmetic medicine and surgery”. I’ve found that in-office training requires considerable time and resources.

The main goal of the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing is to provide cosmetic physicians and cosmetic/plastic surgeons with qualified, trained and work-ready staff. As regulatory requirements become more stringent and consumers more aware, a formal graduate certificate in cosmetic nursing is highly sought after both by Nurses and their employers. Dr Sharon Phillipson says, As president of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Medicine, I look forward to informing our members of the availability and benefits of this course and it’s graduates.

Principles of Cosmetic Nursing - This unit is specifically developed for Nurses as an introduction to the their role in cosmetic medicine, especially in a day hospital and theatre environment. Lectures focus on the roles and responsibilities of the practice nurse, skin science, pre and post-operative care, theatre dynamics, infection control, day hospital accreditation standards and advanced resuscitation. This unit also provides foundation knowledge for students wishing to complete practical competencies in injectable procedures.

Cosmetic Science Surgical andNon-SurgicalEssential for the Nurse wishing

to work in a cosmetic medical practice, this unit provides an in-depth knowledge of each cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedure. Lectures examine the indications, techniques, complications and recovery involved in common cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures and will also discuss the analysis of facial and body assessment.

Lectures are presented by Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons and incorporate DVD presentations of live surgery.

Dermal Science TheoryDermal Science Theory provides comprehensive learning in relation to the most commonly performed dermal therapies. This unit is comprised of 2 modules;

Course Content and Duration After conducting a comprehensive industry consultation, AACDS selected specific units from the Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science and developed new units to make up the six core units in the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing. The following core units cover the key performance areas for Nurses working within the cosmetic medical practice and/or day hospital:

Module 1: Epidermal Resurfacing Techniques - covers chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, skin needling, litigation and insurance issues and written/photo documentation.

Module 2: Light-Based Therapies - focused on the clinical practice of IPL, though lecture topics also encompass laser, radiofrequency, infrared and LED technology. In addition to the essential underpinning knowledge of laser and light physics, this module includes an IPL/Laser Safety Officers Certificate approved by QLD Radiation Health and the Radiological Council of WA.

The learning in Dermal Science Theory is further reinforced with a DVD pack demonstrating skills development in all dermal therapies.

Dermal Science PracticalDermal Science Practical is a hands-on unit in which students transfer their theoretical knowledge into clinical practice. Comprised of three competency units, student achieve competency through performing a required number of treatments (case studies) in the 3 grades of microdermabrasion, AHA peels, Jessner’s Peels, superficial TCA peels, IPL photo rejuvenation and IPL permanent hair reduction.

These competencies ensure

students develop a high standard of technique whilst maintaining a strong focus on hygiene and safety. All practical workshops take place with only two students per trainer/assessor, ensuring a quality-learning environment and exclusivity to equipment.

Cosmeceutical Science (Elective unit)Cosmeceutical science will significantly enhance the Nurse’s knowledge of over-the-counter cosmeceuticals and prescription pharmaceuticals used in dermatology. This knowledge is beneficial in order to effectively treat common skin concerns and complement cosmetic surgery and/or dermal therapy procedures.

This unit provides an evidence-based approach to specific cosmeceutical ingredients as opposed to branded formulas.

Practice Management and Administration (Elective unit) Managerial and administration skills are an important asset to have in any small business environment and is a skill highly sought after by potential employers.

This unit cluster is comprised of two competency units, which have been customised

to the medispa concept - Manage a Practice and Ensure Team Effectiveness. Students will be able to apply these skills to the management and administration of a cosmetic medical practice, beauty salon, day spa or the establishment of their own clinic. Introduction to Injectables (Optional unit for RNs only)This optional unit will provide Doctors and RNs with an opportunity to learn the theoretical and hands-on skills required to inject BOTOX( and dermal fillers within the appropriate doctor supervised setting. The two-day training course is conducted and sponsored by industry leaders Allergan. Students will be required to perform BOTOX( and JUVERDERM( injections to obtain an internationally recognised industry certificate.

The course runs for a six-month period on a full-time basis or twelve months on a part-time basis. Course coordinator April Jorgensen comments, “We’ve found the course duration allows us to deliver a comprehensive and relevant curriculum whilst providing a realistic time-frame and study schedule for most Nurses”.

Flexible Online Training AACDS specialises in online education for all their qualifications. As a postgraduate course, all students are either working, raising a family or both. Therefore, course delivery must be highly flexible. All theoretical units are delivered via online audio and visual lectures, with the practical units available as a 10 to 14-day block (depending on past experience), which is delivered in Perth or Sydney.

In addition to convenient online lectures, students can nominate the number of units they wish to study per 16-week semester. Busy Mums and/or those working full-time can chose to study only 1 or 2 units per semester. Whereas, those more eager to complete their studies in a shortest timeframe, can study up to 5 units concurrently.
