8 Nurses’ Notes

Colegio de Dagupan College of Nursing hasonce again produced a new batch of registered nurseswith the release of the July 2010 Nurse LicensureExamination (NLE) result last August 25. With anoverwhelming 62.9% passing rate for the first timetakers and an overall average of 45.19%, CdD is oneof the 140 out of the 430 schools who made it abovethe 41.1% National Passing Percentage.

If you are a keen observer of the board examresults with the biannual passing percentage of theschool, you most likely noticed the gradual decline inthe past NLE results since the pioneer batch. Duringthe first two NLEs in 2007 wherein CdD produced itspioneer batch, the school consecutively ranked amongthe top performing schools not only in Pangasinan butin the whole region as well. But after these two, theNLE results of the succeeding batches were not aspromising and have been plummeting down. Eventhough they were still considered high compared toother schools and consistently remain above thenational passing percentage. For a while, it had lookedlike everything was going down the drain. Until recently, when the school seems like it has gotten its bearingand was back on track again.

You are probably wondering what happenedin this past academic year that changed the wholescenario. From the descending pattern, why the suddenturn about of this year’s result? Is this for long term?Or just like a spinning top when it will suddenly lose itsstability? Let us take a look at the events precedingthis.

Last school year, the administration, aware ofthe ongoing situation of the board exam results, made

some critical decisions which results in the need to bemore austere in providing the students quality educationto ensure that only those deserving will pass. This createdturmoil among the students since more than half of thegraduating population failed. Some of these students resortto staging a rally; others accepted the decision and justopted to transfer to other schools.

You may think that this is a thoughtless or even aharsh approach from the part of the administration. Butthen, maybe it is not. Come to think of it. In the face of apredicament like this, the administration must be able todo the most sensible way to prevent a disaster fromhappening. It is their responsibility to make sure thatwhatever their decision is, it will be done without bias andfor the betterment of the school and the whole academiccommunity.

In retrospect, Pres. Voltaire P. Arzadon believesthe whole episode and the subsequent buzz it generatedwas just a plain case of management oversight. Third yearand fourth year student transferees from other schoolswere accepted with the hope that they can be fullyintegrated and mainstreamed into the school’s culture ofacademic excellence through CdD nurturing. That throughthe collective efforts of the administration and instructors, something can be done to mold the students’ mind theCdD way in order to prepare them for a better future. Inthe end however, it became apparent that the whole effortwas turning out into an exercise in futility, as the envisionedtransformation among the transferees never materialized. This may be the compelling reason why the administrationopted to become rigid in screening not only the graduatingstudents but the entire nursing poplation as well. Theyhave decided not to accept 3rd year and 4th year

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announcesthat 29,711 out of 84,287 passed the Nurse

Licensure Examination given by the Board of Nursing inthe cities of Manila, Baguio, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu,Dagupan, Davao, Ilocos Sur, Iloilo, La Union, Legazpi, Lucena,Nueva Ecija, Pagadian, Pampanga, Tacloban, Tuguegaraoand Zamboanga last December 2010, earmarking a nationalpassing percentage of 35.25%, the lowest in the history ofthe NLE for ten years.

Leading the said examination is Weanne Estrada fromAdventist University of the Philippines, garnering a boardrating of 88.40%. Along with the roster of topnotchers isRoby Ann Prado of Colegio de Dagupan, who ranked 10th

place with a board rating of 85.20%, the only top notcherfrom the region.

The new 25 registered nurses of the college has registered51.85% passing percentage for the first takers and an overallpassing percentage of 36.76%, still above the nationalstatistics.

Colegio de Dagupan College of Nursing in its vision to createa community of nurses that is highly and technologicallyadvanced in training and education, has continue to slitherthrough the glare of publicity and recognition despite beingan amateur in the Nursing academe with its existence sinceJune 2003.

The college’s first batch of Nursing graduates has toppedthe Provincial and Regional ranking with its 64% passingpercentage last June 2007 Nursing Licensure Exam results. It has even bested out some of the reputable institutions inMetro Manila and the nearby regions and has excelled abovethe National Passing Percentage of 48%.

The college’s second batch of Nursing examinees has onceagain topped the Provincial ranking when it registered a

56% passing percentage lastDecember 2007 Nurse LicensureExam results and once again hasexceeded the national passingpercentage of 43%.

The college has produced its firstever board topnotcher shortly withits second batch of Nursinggraduates and third batch ofexaminees last June 2008 NLEresults. Among the 21 newregistered nurses from the collegeis the noteworthy,RizzaTamayowho ranked 6th place over all. She is only a meager 1%behind from the No. 1 over all topnotcher from University ofSanto Tomas in terms of board rating. And likewise, she isthe only topnotcher from Pangasinan and the entire Region1.

In July 2010 NLE, among the 91,008 examinees, only 37,679 passed registering a 41.4 % national passing percentage, and 47 of which came from the college and earned abewildering 62.9% for the first takers topping the entireprovince and second overall with a passing percentage of45.19%. And two of the passers, Melanie Grace Heng andVanessa Castro were tight-close with the 10th placer.

Indeed, these are the realizations of the college’s continuingvision and mission which is steadfast to serve its studentand the society in operation of its entire wherewithal. Despitebeing an amateur, it has surmounted the many colleges anduniversities who are considered pioneers in the Nursingacademe.

Colegio de Dagupan will continue to walk in the hall ofeminence as it also continues to embark on quality educationalong with its near-rich goal to become a university.

transferees so as to preserve the academic excellenceand especially the moral values the school hasinculcated in each of its students.

From others’ point of view, perhaps this policymay seem unfair. You may think that the school isprejudiced and the school has become a place fordiscrimination. But somehow, most of you will agreethat in order for the school to achieve its goal ofproducing competent human resources in the nursingfield and be a center of scholastic brilliance, it shouldfirst lay out a good foundation and ensure that onlythe best and worthy will stand out to make their dreamscome true and be the school’s source of pride.

At this point in time, it is not yet apparent thatthe misapprehension of the school has been remedied. This recent NLE result has been a small victory and it hasproven that the chosen action has worked. Not yet totally, but little by little through hard work, patience and faith it’sgetting there. As the saying goes, “It is not yet the endbut only the beginning,” a new start to prove to everyonethat it is better to admit a mistake and have the guts tocorrect it than to never admit it at all. We all make mistakesin life, either major or minor ones. The important thing isthat you learn from it and start to make a change.

Do You Remember?By: Ma. Cyril C. Sto.Domingo

As we all know, those who have good memoryhave an advantage to easily pass quizzes and exams.Tests given to us by our instructors require us to memorizeloads of mind blowing terminologies and information. Itmakes us wonder how those who memorize easily keepin mind things that we think is impossible to remember. So as to be the same, we have to learn certain techniqueson how we could improve our memory and keep relevantinformation long enough for our chosen field. Thefollowing tips according to research may help us stackand stock memory:

1. Creating images in your mind that is very funnyor bizarre can help retain something veryimportant to remember. This is because the braineasily remembers unusual stuff while it easilyforgets things that do not stand out in any way.An example would be thinking of a microphoneto remember the name “Mike” or rose toremember “Rosie.” Making the images vivid, colorful and three-dimensional may also makethings easier to remember.

2. Our brain tends to get tired and full if we keepon trying to load it with so much informationincluding those that aren’t supposed to beprioritized. So, it may be more appropriate to geta piece of paper and a pen to jot down the leastimportant things. Through this, you can developvisual memory that you may be able to retrievelater. It also allows you to see the way it looks onpaper.

3. Sleep is also a significant factor in improvingmemory. It s necessary for memory consolidationsince the brain uses the hours of sleep to putnew information into long term storage. Certainsleep disorders like insomnia and apnea mayleave you tired and unable to concentrate duringthe day. So it is very important not to depriveour body of adequate sleep.

4. Another strategy is called the Funnel Approachwherein general concepts are learned prior tospecific details. By studying this manner, you willbe able to focus on the general framework andlater fill in the details. It helps process theinformation more deeply and relate smaller detailseventually.

5. We all heard that a sound body is due to havinga sound mind. This can be achieved by beingphysically active to enhance concentration.Without exercise, stress cannot be managed thusconcentration is badly affected. Stress is broughtabout by a hormone called cortisone that candamage the hippocampus which plays the largestrole in processing information into memory.Exercise helps manage stress and reduce the riskfor disorders that lead to memory loss.

6. Hydration can also improve mental performancesince the brain is made up of 85% water. Drinkingtoo much coffee and carbonated drinks can causedehydration instead of giving your brain thehydration it needs by drinking a fluid ounce ofwater for every pound of your body weight eachday.

7. Reciting the information aloud can help youencode the information and identify how well youhave learned it. it can also ensure that you havea true understanding of the information.

8. Certain brain exercise called “neurobic” exercisecan stimulate the brain in the formation andretention of memory. One way is to break usualroutines in challenging ways such as using yournondominant hand in performing activities dailyto activate little-used connections in the nondominant side of the brain.

As a nursing student, with all the anatomy, microbiology, medical-surgical, obstetric, pediatric, psychiatric, neurologic, oncologic and every other nursing subjects you have and all the nursing books youread every single day… Have you thought that you already know all the imaginable information pertainingto the human body? Well, it’s now time for you to think again. This may sound farfetched, but the reality issome of the most unusual information about our body cannot be found in our books. (What?!) Yes, it’s true.I’m not kidding!

So as not to make you feel left out, here is a collection of trivia ranging from anatomy to medicalfacts gathered from various sources that I bet you didn’t know before reading this article:

1. Though it makes up only two percent of ourtotal body weight, the brain demands 20percent of the body’s oxygen and calories.

2. Nerve impulses to and from the brain travelas fast as 170 miles per hour.

3. Fewer than five percent of cardiac arrestsufferers survive to hospital discharge. If avictim of cardiac arrest is given good CPR, getsshocked by a defibrillator within four minutes, and drugs are given within 60 minutes, thechance of survival can go up to 60 percent.

4. A pair of human feet contains 250,000 sweatglands. Each foot can sweat the equivalent ofhalf a glass of water per day.

5. Every 12 years, we humans have an entirelynew skeleton due to the body’s continualreplacement of its bone cells.

6. The skin of the armpits can harbor up to516,000 bacteria per square inch, while drierareas, such as the forearm, have only about13,000 bacteria per square inch.

7. A boy’s voice breaks during puberty becausehis vocal cords are lengthening. Up until thatpoint, girl’s and boy’s vocal cords are the samelength.

8. It’s totally impossible to sneeze with your eyesopen.

9. Your brain weighs about three pounds, butover two pounds of that is water.

10. If you were freeze dried, like coffee, 90% ofyour weight would be the real you, and 10%would be the little critters that call your bodytheir home.

11. Your stomach makes a new layer of mucusevery 2 weeks. Otherwise, it will digest itself.

12. If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6days, you would have produced enough soundenergy to heat one cup of coffee.

13. If you toot consistently for 6 years and 9months, enough gas is produced to create theenergy of an atomic bomb.

14. The human heart creates enough pressurewhen it pumps blood, that it could squirt blood30 feet.

15. Banging your head against a wall uses150 calories an hour.

16. Platelets are manufactured at the rate of 200billion a day.

17. The average human eyelash lives about 150days.

18. The thumbnail grows the slowest; the middlenail grows the fastest.

19.The strongest bone in the body, the thigh bone,is hollow. Ounce for ounce, it has a greaterpressure tolerance and bearing strength thana rod of equivalent size in cast steel.

20. By the time you turn 70, your heart will havebeat some two-and-a-half billion times(computing on an average of 70 beats perminute). Therefore, an average person hasthree billion heartbeats to spare. That is whysome doctors believe that drugs (called beta-blockers) that slow down the heart rate mayhelp prolong life. Generally, unhealthy peoplehave faster heart rates while athletic individualshave slower heart rates.

Nursing Diagnosis: Disturbed sleep pattern related to toxicity from clinical rotations and ward classes,

apprehensions of exams, tons of paperwork…

Student nurses, well students in general, have lots of complaints; one of which is being sleep-

deprived. Sleeping is a lap of luxury and unfortunately we can’t meet the expense of this indulgence.

How I wish after peppering our Facebook walls with all these moans, with just a click it will expire.

But in contrary, the more we think of it, the harder it takes to end these complaints. Oftentimes, we

want to bite the dust and have a mental breather as bottling up these sentiments for long is a big

distress.

Clinical instructors often point out that Nursing is both a science and an art. So does it mean

we have to double up the sweat and amplify our willpower? Sigh! This solely may cause a student’s life

in the College of Nursing agonizing; tot up with hassles from fitting in classes, clinical rotations, loads

of paperwork plus our personal glitch and hitch. Beyond doubt, we can call it “torture!” A “torture” that

we must endure to grab that “license.”

Keeping on the trajectory of toxicity will surely steer Nursing students to a college of fire and

brimstone. Hyperbolic maybe, but this is what reality presents. At some point, we might joggle on our

shoes but having nerves of steel isn’t necessary to bear this misery. What it takes to quench this burnout

is an effective coping mechanism. Individuals vary in coping traits, discovering your own is your task

for now.

We can never totally eliminate stress in our school life but we can learn how to effectively

manage it and use it to help us. Surviving Nursing life is a matter of believing in thyself when no one

else does. One can easily get lost with this toxicity and better quit. But once successful, a barrel of

laughs isn’t enough to convey our outpouring bliss.

Endorsed…

I might get hurt but i must not give up...

Just live my LIFE..

LOVE the way I WANT , and the way I

understand it..

I never get tired ...

STAY ALIVE TO LOVE, AND STAY IN

LOVE TO LIVE…

Because I know, I am more than

an Ordinary Bestfriend…

Ord

inary

Bestfriend I Love someone,

I never hesitate to show what I feel,

I’m just following my heart..

I never waste my time, never fear nor

doubt;

Never quit nor stop..

But never expecT something in

return...

I’m not afraid to become STUPID..

Just LOVE, be REAL...

Life is too exhausting and as we all knowwe are living our lives with all forms ofhassles. Duties, reviews, paper works anda lot more are good paradigms of stressors.Stress makes us bothered, irritable and weakat times. But hey, here are certain ways onhow to deal with stress in our lives. I don’tstate it as “eliminate” them but “manage”them instead because we can’t freeourselves with pesters and stressors.

Here are some ways to manage the hasslesin our lives:

1. Be yourselfHow was it linked to managing stress?Simple. Be yourself by living your life as whoyou are. In other words, let us be as whowe really are and let us not live our life bybeing others. Most of us are great imitators. But isn’t it stressful for us if we always tryto dress like someone else? Dress like BarbieDoll or Lady Gaga where in fact you don’thave the cash to buy the clothes they have. And the reality is you are having a neck-deep debts in your account because ofbuying the clothes they have just to be likethem.

2. Be honestHonesty is the best policy. Yet, why is it sohard to be candid all the time? Sometimes, white lies are healthy but doing it all thetime is a hell of a stress in our lives. A perfectexample are students who ALWAYS tell liesto their parents especially when paying theirtuition fees(peace!). Aren’t we bothered byour conscience when we do this? Where infact our parents turn the night into day justto earn money and pay our fees? Aren’t wedisturbed of doing this? Try being honest atleast for an hour and see the difference.

3. Use your time wiselyTime management calls for this. To avoidcramming or sleeping late at night to finisha schoolwork, try to have an organizer athand for you to keep track of all youractivities and be reminded of your deadlines.Manage time by spending it with sensiblethings to do. Reduce the time for your “nightouts” or “gimmicks” if you know you will behaving your major, major exam the next day.

4. Avoid “Third Parties”Promises are meant to be kept and not tobe broken. Once you committed yourselfto someone, do not try putting up yourselfwith a new commitment. In almost everysituation, third parties should have nospace in our lives. Likened to our heartbeat, it only beats for “lub-dub” and anyextra sound following “lub-dub” isn’t reallyhealthy for us. Thus, third parties shouldbe avoided in our lives. Third parties canbe considered as a radical stress.

5. Anticipating is necessaryAlways be ready. Anticipate things becauseit would be less stressful for you if you areprepared in any situation. Stressfulsituations can always happen any time. Butif you are the type of person who alwaysanticipate what might happen, then restassured that no matter how knotty thesituation is, you will survive. Same thingas “ ALWAYS READ IN ADVANCE.”

6. Learn to “hold on” and “letgo”As early as the toddler age, we are alltrained by our parents on how to “holdon” and “let go”. It is very healthy for us ifwe both practice these two things togetheras we grow older. We are always stressedbecause we don’t know when is the righttime to hang on to something and whento let go of things. We don’t know when totighten our belts to our savings and savefor the rainy days. Most of the time we letgo of our money just to buy the latest pairof shoes in town. We don’t know how toascertain if the situation calls for “holdingon” or “letting go”. Hold on to your faithand let go all of the grudges in your heart.Hold on if it’s worth it and let go if thethings are rubbish. Do this hale and heartyand the stressors can be tapered.

7. Eat for your lifeWhat you eat makes you who you are. Eata well balanced diet. Health problems aresome of the stressors in so many people. An example is too much fat that makesyour heart unhealthy. Eat your breakfastlike a king, eat your lunch moderately and

eat your dinner like a poor. Do not skip mealsbecause an empty stomach leads to an emptybrain.

8. Love your enemies“The best way to be mean with mean people,is to kill them with your kindness,” a line fromthe book ‘Mean girls’ and I love it. We can’tplease everyone, but in the first place, weare not born to please them. Be kind toeveryone, less talk, less conflict, less stress.

9. Avoid “pimples”Same way as saying “have time for rest.”Rest. Do not kill yourself with those stressorsbecause it might lead you to some thingsyou don’t expect. Like pimples! Do we liketo have a pimple on our nose saying “hello”upon staring in front of the mirror onemorning? No, we don’t. Stress is one of thecommon causes of acnes. So have 8 hoursof sleep, read books, watch a movie or eatice cream if you don’t want craters on yourface.

10. LOLLaugh out loud. No matter how weary youare and how stressful the situation is, do notforget to laugh. Laughter is the bestmedicine, it might not be as effective as weexpect but it can allay ourselves from pain, problems and stressors for a second.

There maybe so many ways to manage stressin our lives. But I only wrote a few which willbe very essential for us students and peoplein line with the medical field. Indeed, theseare the most common ways to manage stressfor the most common stressors we have.

Clinique Happyfor Men.. Bango!) Pero, don’t be deceived by the age,mas mature mag-isip ‘yan kaysa sa amin. Si Jayvee, angHarry Potter of Nursing. Si Jobelle, the beauty and brains ngBundat. Sila parating dalawa ni Jack ang hinaharap naminkapag may kailangan kami kasi with their combination,

Kungmay problema sa topic at 5 minutes na lang beforelecture, we don’t consult the book or the net. What dowe do in this situation? We look for JP (naks!).

College ofNursing presents “The Bundats.”

Noong summer ng 2009 actually unang nabuo angpangalan naming Bundat dahil sa romance namin sapagkain. Basta may food, go kami. Ito kasi yung panahonng Bangus Fest at Foodstrip (name it, shawarma, icecream...pinapatos namin!). Whenever we wereat the table, with plates full of sautéed beef with broccoliand cabbage (and additional fats for Ronnel), solved nakami. We had great times during those days. And westill continue this tradition (basta may _ _).

kami nalalagi. Chowking? Lahat ng nasa menu, na-orderna! KFC? Hello, walang tatalo sa Italian Roma at sa friedtalong! McDo? The siopao, themami, the arroz caldo (kahit kulang ng sabaw), thebreads...hay!

They listen, comfort youand tell you that everything will turn out fine (kahit kungminsan false reassurance, ang importante alam mongandiyan lang sila).

There were no fancy food or guests wearinggowns and tuxes made by famous designers orchampagne; but it was surely a night to be remembered. Grabe, parang may tournament nun. Everyone chipped-in; may nagdala ng cake, chicken,

I know our clan will stillbe there no matter where we are.

The story of the Bundat Clan will still live on. So “THEEND” will not be used in this article, rather, “See you onthe next episode of the College of Nursing presents, THEBUNDATS!”

Luv yah all! – Pamela Tiu Basto, CertifiedBundat)

Miss A: A Realization of Life

I never realized how time really flies. I only know my age increasesevery year when I am in Manila affiliation at the National Centerfor Mental Health (NCMH). Yes, my birthday falls at the end ofsummer where nursing schools from the provinces come to Manilafor affiliation at Specialty hospitals. I have the privilege to spendmy summers at the NCMH as a Clinical Instructor since 2006.And I also have the time not actually to celebrate my special daywith my dear students, but to reflect on life in every aspectwhen I communicate with mentally ill clients. So, as I ponderabout the major, major mistakes in my life and how I haveovercome them, I can’t help to compare my freely lived life outsidethe mental institution with my clients. Let me give you an ideahow clients are at NCMH so you’ll understand how it goes duringa psychiatric affiliation.

Meet Miss A. I’ve known her for four years now. Oneof the most popular clients from a women’s pavilionfor rehabilitation at NCMH. In her early forties, she’s the warmest “schiz” (pronounced as skitz)in the whole universe. Miss A welcomes me witha big hug every start of our summer duty ather pavilion. “Dito na ka Mommy? Lan linggoka dito amin? Kunin mo ko ha, usto kowapo.” Those are her standard remarks yearafter year. Every morning, she greetsme “Good morning Mommy EI!” (Instead ofCI, she has a speech defect) with a sheepishgrin and squeezes my arm as if we’re bestfriends when she’s in the mood. She can bevery friendly and makes an effort to get to knowmy students one by one. Nevertheless, like anyother schiz patients, Miss A cries and make sureher tears are visible to all students and clinicalinstructors when she’s depressed so she will bepampered with attention. Miss A would introduce meto other new clients as “EI namin, noon pa” because shehad always been a part of my group of clients since 2006. Miss Awould point to her fingers and recall my students who had heras a client in 2006, from Ara, Fairy Ann, Zsa-zsa etc. and smiles, feeling proud of her great memory. After that she would demandthat I include her in my group of clients, as if she does not knowthat the nursing attendant do distribute clients among studentsof affiliating schools. With pouting lips, she would come to meand shout,” di mo uha ko mommy,” as if I have done a big crime. After a couple of days however, euthymic, she would say “himommy” forgetting her frustration and again would remind meto include her in my group of clients for the coming week. Mystudents understand it simply as”nagpapareserve ng slot.” Butthe most endearing thing she can do is sing her heart out withher original composition of a love song, where she wouldmanifest neologism (pathological coining of new words) atits true nature. Miss A will sing her heart out to show hersinging prowess with her song that sounds like Chinese.I’ve been listening with this never ending rendition for fouryears now and her music remains the same. What’s evenamazing is even if you ask her to encore, her lyrics neverchange. She is cute and most of the time “pacute,” funny

and entertaining. But what’s so special about her anyway? Ittook me four years to realize that she can really be a great sourceof realization. Let’s have a closer look with our differences.

Miss A delights in a bottle of very cold orange juice and a LALAfish cracker. I delight in drinking a natural grape juice and apiece of New York cheesecake krispy kreme doughnut.

Miss A loves singing a capella with her “shawla-shawla.” I lovelistening to Lea Salonga’s “Two Words.”

Miss A longs to wear brown and blue undies regardless of brand.I fancy a pink sleeveless Benetton blouse.

Miss A does not want to go home. I lose weight wheneverI’m away from my comfort zone.

Miss A does not listen when she is not interested ingroup psychotherapies. I pretend to listen to afriend’s story even when I don’t feel like it so asnot to disappoint her.

Miss A does not want to join group games duringplay therapies. I believe you can enjoy the gamewhen you are one of the participants.

Miss A likes whattatops. I prefer chocotops.

Miss A remains to be skeptic on God. I’ma Christian who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ.

And so on and so forth. You might be wonderingwhy I am enumerating my differences with Miss A.

She is a “schiz” client and I am a clinical instructor, anormal individual. We don’t share likes and dislikes.

We just live in a single planet. But she had me realizedone vital fact last summer…We both long to be happy, worthyand loved. I may not fully understand why her coping mechanismbecame poor that she had give in to her world of insanity. But allof us have wants and needs that need to be pacified so we cancarry out our lives as expected by the society.

In my feeling reaction sessions (self-awareness), I have alwaysencouraged my students to focus on their positive attributes. Each of us has our share of joys and sorrows. However, all of usare given an ability or capability, knowledge or talent which canbe used to our advantage of a life worth travelling. We just haveto recognize this, work things out, feel blessed and be a blessingto others. Miss A and the other “schiz” missed this out.

Our God is not a God who would bless us when hefeels like it. He is a L-O-V-I-N-G God. We just haveto trust in his abiding love and hold on to his wordswhen we’re falling apart. He plans to prosper usand not to harm us, to give us hope and a future(Jeremiah 29:11).

If you are in someone’s company, it’s fun and great andall but sometimes, you just need some time alone. Time tothink. No one to bother you. It could be done while sitting ona bench staring blankly at passersby. Or lying down on ahammock tied on trees. Or do it like I have done, sitting onthe toilet and taking a dump.

Heavenly wisdom dawned on me in several occasionswhile defecating. Four walls, dripping water, a hum, and the“push” may in your favor, churn out a sudden realization of atruth. Join me in these truths I have discovered while on thethrone.

Thinking about death will make you appreciate the lifeyou have, may it be pathetic and mediocre. It will amplifythe value of your life (and given religious influences) thinkthat you have been blessed. Knowing that you could die willmake you prudent about decisions you could have maderashly. It will, in the cliché, make you live your life to thefullest.

There is a possibility that one could be obsessed withlove and there is always one question that “searchers” areasking and that is, “When will I meet the one?” Answer, WAIT.God will not create your soulmate and not allow you to meethim/her. Impatience will manifest itself as desperation.

Visiting the grocers is fun. It’s like stepping into adifferent world. With yourshopping list, you walkaisle per aisle looking atstuff you could possiblybuy.

Stepping into the noodlesand pasta aisle, picking up a pack of pancit

canton, you return to the late night puyatan at your boardinghouse eating this dish you can prepare in less than 5 minutes.Your nose buried in books trying to stuff the content in your head.To help you, you reach for a bowl filled with curly, salty strands ofenergy. This has been with you from your childhood and willprobably be with you for more years. You get several and putthem in your cart. You could add several more and invite some ofyour friends to come over. The canton will be complimented bythe Skyflakes you plan to buy from the bread and pastries aisle. The crisp from breaking the flat bread into bite-sized pieces andbiting into them reverberate in your room. The sound is enoughto muffle the radio playing your favorite radio station. You returnto your shopping list.

Moving on, coffee is next on the list. You reach for the old favorite, the instant coffee refill in a small pouch you plan to empty in ajar. You pair it with creamer and a hefty bag of sugar. To aid youin your struggle against the call of the bed, drowsiness and theneed for instant perk-me-up, you intend to mix the beverage

yourself using the unwritten recipe capable of being decipheredonly by the very tongue you use to taste the bitter blackness inthe cup. Coffee can be quite harsh on the stomach; you weighyour options on choosing the fruit juice you’d drink as analternative. The iced tea litro pack is cheaper and you decided tobuy a dozen. There is always ice available at the local sari-sari.

Canned goods are always essential. Having limited time to preparefor a proper meal, the convenience in a can is always helpful.Open it and reheat, a meal is served, hunger satiated, workcontinues. You choose the indispensable can of sardines in tomatosauce. You recollect that sayote can be sliced and added to modifythe pre-made recipe. If you want breakfast made faster, you tickthe corned beef and meat loaf on your shopping list. With theflame as the other ingredient, you can beat the clock and be full. You were happy with your decision and headed on.

You near the end of your shopping list, the clinking bottles ofbooze caught your attention and you thought of the nights spentwasted after a few bottles of fluid pleasure. Although, you hadyour fair share of headaches and emesis, you persist on drinking.Planning to reconnect and catch-up with friends, you take twosix-packs and the favorite gin. The litro pack would go perfectlywell with the gin.

The trip to the grocers is always fun. What you put in yourshopping cart reflects the lifestyle you’re living.

Epiphanies on the Toilet Seat

Praying to God and asking for patience, strength, wisdom, and even stuff is what people usually do. But I have learnedthat God wouldn’t give them to you immediately, what He doesis to present you with opportunities to be patient, strong, wiseand chances for you to get the things you want.

Complaining really does not solve anything but it can callattention to things which need a solution. Coping with a problemcan sometimes be in the form of denial, setting those problemsaside until you feel you can handle them. Complaining let’s youknow what you need to do.

There is some truth in the saying, “Whoever said moneycan’t buy happiness doesn’t know where to shop.” Trust me onthis one, things can be sources of happiness BUT it is onlytemporary. “Real happiness” is vague and hard to find, and itisn’t in one of your shopping bags.

God is so great with the human design; He made a pro-and recreational area near a waste disposal facility.

Think differently, there are things you can do on the toiletseat other than leaving your identifying mark. As a conclusion,as the tummy is for food, the brain is for thoughts. The moreyou put in, the more you haul out.

I suppose I were to ask you, “What makes people incommon?”

You’ll probably say, “A lot.”

Actually, you’re right. Human are made artisticallyunique and yet they share a common dimension, eitherin terms of the biological aspect or the emotional andmore so.

I have the chance to hear the lecture of Mr. LesterLintao, a nurse and a reviewer at a certain reviewcenter. He asked what the emotional center in man is.

Yes, you’re right if you say it’s the hypothalamus, thefifth lateral to be exact and not the heart.

But did you know the scientific reason why the hearthas been used to symbolize our feeling of affection?

Only in the heart that cells do not multiply or undergothe process called mitosis, thus cancer cannot occur. That is a sign of how FAITHFUL the heart’s cells are.The main function of the heart is to pump blood. That’show KIND and GENEROUS it is. When you unexpectedlysaw the apple of your eye, your blood volume increases, and your heart starts to compensate and it makes youBLUSH - these are the characteristics of the heart thatgives justice to its symbolism.

What I am probably talking here has been the topic ofmost conversations, printed articles and quotations.

But what makes it a smack?

Because at the end of the day, when you try tocontemplate, you’ll probably realize why you exist.

It’s because of the one great thing called LOVE.

Let us not be hypocrites. You have to admit it, it is afact not supported by science but by your ownacceptance indeed.

“I was born out of love and I should start living by itsdoctrine. That’s the greatest thing I can do.”

I have realized that if you love life, life will love youback.

Start saying and doing it. It’s better off this way. I’mfed up of the negative stuffs.

I am not trying to be relentless about the issue, I justthought of saying something GOOD, BETTER and mostof all IMPERATIVE.

We love because it’s the only TRUE adventure.

Love, love, love, love, love, love and love. That’s allwe need to do.

9. Mnemonics (the initial “m” is silent) are clues ofany kind that helps us remember something bycausing us to associate the information we needto remember a visual sentence or word. Forexample, acronyms which are initials that createpronounceable words or in vice versa such asusing sentences in which the first letter of eachword is a part of or represents the initial of whatyou want to remember.

10. Research has also found out that blueberries andberry juice are potential memory antioxidants thatcan help reverse memory loss. An experimentconducted has shown that aging rats fed with adiet high in blue berries had their memory lossreversed and eventually grew new brain cells.

Memory is subjective they say. Thus, only thethings we want to remember are the only ones wecould possibly store in our memory. It is also importantto motivate yourself and keep a positive attitude totell yourself that you can remember and learn whatyou need to remember. Telling yourself that you havea bad memory actually hampers the ability of yourbrain to remember while positive mental feedback setsup your expectation of success.

Once I was a carpenter. And as everybody knew, Iwas the one who built those superb houses. I was theman who used to bring that tattered toolbox-withhammer, my rules and other compulsory things forbuilding homes. Everyone seemed to like my buildingsuntil now.

It was then time for me to establish my own house. And I started, first by drafting the design. Then Iplanned how to put it up. I gathered the resourcesand soon I was able to construct it.

What a magnificent dwelling place, a broad auburnroof glittered to greet the morning sun and shimmeredin the gleam of the pale moon at night. There werehigh wooden pillars reaching towards the enchantedchandelier ceiling, it supported the house fromcollapsing. A three-step marbled stair in front of thehouse provided a sense of welcoming to anyone whoenters not to destroy my home but to admire it. Thewindows were opened to welcome the placid breezecoming from the bare sea and were curtained withenticing colors. The floor was well scrubbed enablingit to flicker every time light grinned on it. Inside, thehouse was opulently emblazoned at night; the lightsshown brightly and sparked lustrously giving stilldarkness the profound life. Everywhere in that minute, the house was crammed with rhythm and harmony. Itwas a simple serene abode.

It was one of the most splendid days of my life, one of the most glorious. It was pleasing to the eyethat what I have attained and fulfilled was a greatsuccess. Of course there were obstacles that I hadencountered, but all those were nothing compared tothe gladness that overwhelmed my warm bosom.

Time passed by when closest comrades of minearrived and offered me to join them – I did. We had

such a fine time, having fun, straying toand fro. We wandered, roamed and wentastray afar. It was a long flight, where Isaw and experienced the beauties of life

that were long been hidden from my sightfor I was held prisoner at my house. I

roved and meandered but mylonely house, which I strivedhard to erect, was then

forsaken. Not only did I desertmy house, I abandoned my living,

too.

There were times I came across at the once-brilliant-house. I spotted that its pillars were nearlyruined. Termites raced up in it, feeding on its once-smooth-surface. But I did not dare patch it up becauseI was too busy wondering about my next journey. Ialso noticed its wrecked crown, rusty and full ofdisrepair – once bay, now gray. The rooms were filledwith cobwebs, dust and dirt. The floor was no longerglistening. The breeze from the sea was unbearablesince it brought a gust not a gentle breeze. At nightthe light did not shine as before leaving the night withquavering chillness and dreary calmness. The onceharmonious home was a disaster. But I was in haste;there were loads of much remarkable things outsidewaiting. I journeyed and carried even more fun andmerry-making. Still the poor house lay in disrepair.

Long enough, I finally got exhausted. I went homeand was afoot when I saw… there it was – the housewas standing wasn’t it? There it was lying on theground. It was like a sand castle that was easilywrecked by the flowing waves.

What happened? I did not know. All I knew wasthat I was out and having fun while my poor housewas nearing its end. Once I was a carpenter and along time ago I used to build houses and structures. But why would I be anxious about it? I could rebuild it!But it was intricate! Restoring what was destroyed wasa woeful punishment.

All of a sudden, as if a lightning struck me, I realizedthat it was my entire fault. I neglected the pitiablehouse. I repented but it was too late. I mourned andlamented yet I could do nothing. I should have notdestroyed my dwelling. Deep inside my suffering heart,I could hear its grief. Its torment pierced through myvery vein. I hoped that was a dream. I hoped that wasonly a ghostly nightmare. I have the power to create;yet I have the capacity to destroy. I could not bear theblame on my shoulders forever. I could not for I wasthe creator, the warden and the pillar, the carpenter ofthat home.

Who are you that haunt my soul?In the middle of the night I’m a lonely fool

What do you have in me you take control?

In my restless night you overrule

You’re like a shadow lurking in a holeStrong I am now, I know, I won’t fall

I smile, I laugh with pride, I stand tall

Who are you who hit me like a bore?

What ghost are you? I want to assaultTo kill you in my head. I’d like you orb

Remove your face in the heart of my soul

Instead you kill me little by little I can’t ignore

My MorpheusBy: Sarah Jane M. Edejer

I was weaker than I used to be,

And in my nerves ran a haste of agony,

Devoured my flesh cautiously,

But impended my soul rapidly.

Scarred me, tortured me,

Educed a rash of my adrenaline,

This reality has indeed battered me.

All I need is my sanity.

You came to me like a rush of breeze,

Pilfering the night with just a kiss

You fitted me like a second skin,

And in my life, you’re my morphine.

You raged the monster in my head

Awakened the spirits that once were dead

You’re all I need in this life of mine

My God, my Savior, I am thine.

EclipseBy: Sarah Jane M. Edejer

Maybe I am the revelation of a grieving soul

the dwelling of animosity and destruction,

the shadow of the world’s dying future,

the mirror of the morbid reality,

the refuge of every wicked man.

Maybe I have covered the light of my eternity,

I have resided my ultimate flesh into darkness,

I have ended the dawn of my reverie,And now there is nothing left for you to see

For I have built the tomb of our rhapsody.

But do you conceive the sign of my anguish?

The dark hole that hides my hollow being? You showed me nothing but obscurity and

deceits,

That I am an unending flawed premonition,

Though I am just a morsel of tormented tears.

And so I am – the opaque rays of vivid isolation,

Viewing the savage destiny of mortality

Would deflect the lasting revenge of my ire,

For you have not accepted my weeps and

agony,Until the last breath of my unraveled mystery.

Burn for me,

Grow wild for me,

Take me in, indulge and see

What bittersweet madness reside in me,What imagery of blissful ecstasy

Dream of lies and dwell in it,

Truths will never set thee free.Drink of me and thou will taste

Life’s make-believe meaning in sugar haste.

Turn to me and I’ll soothe thee,

I’ll breathe thee life from eternity.

Be grateful afterwards and do not regretThat I left thee along, in pain and threat

For I’m only a fleeting fortress of thy soul

And I’ve come to prepare thee for sorrowSo walk the scorching inferno solely

For I am sin, and I have poisoned thee…

Another hour has gone by

Without you nearby

Seems like I’ve been waiting forever

To have just another day for us

Asking for a chance to hold you so tight

Just to feel your embrace that I would

again miss tonight

Feeling your warm skin touching mine

Relieves all the pain and makes me

Waiting for our eyes to meet each other

The poem of anunborn child

By: Jelly Anne C. Cuison

Two is better than one,Love is powerful yet simple as well,It makes one sightless of the reality,Worst of it, it makes anyone egoistic…

They loved each other so much,They never heeded to what people would say,They stayed stalwart to keep the tie unbreakable,They love, they love and that is all that matters…

They left the whole world and created their own,Did everything, and anything that would bring themto the seventh heaven,They were in each other’s pocket,And no one could ever shatter them…

A passionate kiss and fiery embrace makes themblooming,And even in a cold forlorn night,They never felt it was even lonely…

One day, things went off the beam,I came and they both cursed each other,They both wanted to recede to the world theyabandonedAnd simply forget the whim they have,Evil ruled their wits and they both made up theirmind granting the evil’s appeal…

How did it happen? That the wicked vanquished the kindness,The compassion of love you had, where was it?Was it only intended for the both of you?Am I not the fruit of your boundless love?

I was expecting to catch a glimpse of the stars andthe moon,Hear the sound of the birds singing,Gaze at the flowers blooming,And take pleasure in to the laughter of the childrenaround,All I wanted is be cared and loved…

But…Everything was just a castle in the sky…I was wrecked and lived into hell…

When DarknessFalls…

By: Jelly Anne C. Cuison

I was lost and wasAlone in the dark,I was helpless and weedy,Screaming for help yet no one could hear me…

I am to be blamed. For I followed the wrong way,The route which I believed was right,For I was selfish and sightless of reality…

I assumed I was in the right company,I was certain I won’t be regretful in the end,But everything turned to be other way around,I was dead and in hell…

I was left in misery,And thought that I was in the dead end,I was pleading for help,But everyone refused to give me a hand…

I cursed the whole world and all the peoplearound me,I asked Him where was He and why is thishappening to me,I was waiting for His reply but nothing came,I end up thinking that I really ought to have thistorture…

One day I had the answer,I had it from the very beginning but it washidden,The answer was with me,And I wasn’t aware of it…

I was given the choices,And the choices I opted made me who I am,I was blinded and selfish,And I deserved everything…

I should have reckoned for the things I made,I should have listened to the people who reallycared for me,I shouldn’t be vulnerable and should not let myemotions rule my life,And I should have been very keen in times whenthe darkness falls…

Reality of LifeBy: Liezl M. Legaspi

Streaming blood runs through my head,Confused and lost in the world of misleadLife has made its reason of being cruelTo be thrown on the pit of suffering and slavery.

No one understands this feeling of mine,The feeling of being hated and left behind. Why does this have to happenTo a man whose life has been condemned?

It is easy to get hurt yet so hard to be happy,It is easy to fall yet so hard to fly.I just wish for understanding and companionship,But hate and discrimination is all I get.

Sometimes it feels like I don’t belong to this world,Where people around you, stab you in the back.Is this really the meaning of life?I guess it’s not, it’s the reality of life.

I’ve been blessed like everybody else,But I know my life is for somebody else.

The Person who watches us from up highHe gives me strength. That’s not a lie.

Through me, He works his miracle,In our hearts, there is His temple.

Although I’m also a sinner,He chose me to be his worker

Through my hands, He touches those in needIt’s as if He planted something in me, like a seed.

I’m a nurse through my actionsWith His guidance, I make things better.

When Only HopeMakes Me Hold On

By: Shi San

True love, people say, comes when you do not wait and hope for it; and the person who would makeyou fall in love need not possess the charms you dreamed he has.

I can still remember the first time I saw you. It was a cold evening in December. A friend, whohappened to be your classmate, and I went to your place. We went to the rooftop and I found you there staringat the star-filled sky with some chips in your hands. You looked so manly and adoring when you half-smile forevery falling star you saw. My friend introduced us to each other; we shook hands and exchanged smiles. Youoffered your chips; I took some and just like that, without us knowing it, our story begun.

We then started going out. We went to the mall, watched the latest movies and then dine togetherwhile we share stories of friendship, dreams and hopes, of passion and romance.

It may sound too fast; but I can not control my feelings. Every time we parted ways after hours ofbeing together, I feel my heart being torn apart; I can’t help it, I begin to miss you. By then, I know I was fallingdeep in love with you. I wanted so much to let you know how I feel, but I’m reminded about what mygrandmother always say to me; a girl should wait for the boy to profess his love before the girl could say I loveyou too. And so, I waited patiently for you to finally say those three words, those words that, I know form thestart, would give me pure bliss.

Then there came the night when the heavens finally granted my wish. I was feeling uneasy; and Icould not sleep. I did not know what those signs were for or why I was acting and feeling so unnatural. Ineeded to talk to someone whom I know could let me feel safe; so I called the one person who can comfortme. I called you. The moment I heard your loving voice, I just listened to your eerie disclosure of your feelingsfor me, though it was not like you. You have always been very silent and timid but at that very moment youseemed like you were so used with being glib as you say, “I want to be the man who would wake you up in themorning, kiss your lips and tell you how much more lovable your smile is compared to the sunshine. You are theshiniest treasure I ever found. I love you, Yumie.”

If you only knew how those words made me sleepless and smiling all night long; you might have takenthem back if you were there with me, for I looked so high school with all the bliss I felt. And please blame menot. I never cared how childish I looked, there’s just too much love in me and I knew it was all that I want tocare about.

But being officially lovers did not stop our romance from growing. Rather, I began to love you more. You then became the center of my universe. And just like the others, we adopted an endearment. My dateswith you were the most romantic of all.

And then, months passed. I started to give you 95% of what I have, and only 5% was left for me. Igave room for your immaturity; learned to patiently wait for two days before you make a reply to my message;I taught myself to understand your anger when you caught me looking at other boys when we go out or everytime they want to make friends with me. And yet, you’ve grown cold.

I guess, all I want to tell you now is I miss the old you. I miss your morning and midnight texts of “Ilove you,” “I miss you” and “I can’t wait to see you.” I miss the scent of your perfume, your corny “banats,” Imiss our dinner dates, I miss your smile, your teases, your touch… I really miss the old you, Lance.

Yes, I love you like I’ve never loved anyone before and will never love anyone else like this again.A lot of people believe that too much love can kill a person. But I hope that you can still breathe every

time I become so possessive of you. I hope you would never grow tired of me; I hope you would never thinkof replacing me; I hope you would never tell me that you need space; I hope you still can sweetly say whilelooking into my eyes that you love me.

Please remember this… I’ll never stop hoping. I won’t. I just can not.

TURN ON THE BRIGHTER SIDE& FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

Reflecting on my past, I am so blessed that I made the decision to pursue a nursingeducation, which allowed me to finally fulfill the dreams I had so long ago.

Colegio de Dagupan College of Nursing became my second home during my school daysway back 2003 up to 2007, as one of the Pioneer Batch. It was about four years in themaking of being a Registered Nurse and IV Therapist. It was in my own will to reallyachieve this dream I have started. From those head-bursting lectures and exams, withthose toxic hospital and community affiliations, it was never a regret and a reason forme to give up despite all the hardships I had especially in supporting my financial expenses.

My dad’s death in the middle of my nursing education made me depressed. But this islife’s offer. Bearing with it, I became stronger and dedicated to succeed. I just smilewhen I reminisce and remember those things I did to support my study. I took all thescholarship exams I knew, worked in a hotel as a host and even became a helper in arestaurant. Life is unpredictable. We don’t know what lies in the future. Without thesesacrifices, everything now wouldn’t be in its right place.

The most remarkable side of it are those moments when you wholeheartedly feel thepassion of giving your tender loving care to the patients. It was very satisfying thatbefore you leave from your duty, you will be receiving smiles from your patients. Thatwas when I was touched by nursing, then totally fell in love with it. It wasn’t an easyjourney to achieve my lifelong dream. But my experience proves that if you follow yourdreams and never give up, you will be rewarded with the career of your choice. I havenot regret for a moment the choices I have made, and as a result, I continue to have afascinating, enriching and exciting life as a nurse.

Be thankful to all the people around you, good or bad. Everything has its own purpose.Never forget to live with GOD. Make HIM the center of your life. Be inspired. Take all thechallenges in life, love your teachers and mentors because behind those hardships andwords from them is a LICENSE waiting for you. They are there to guide you. Withoutthem, your nursing path wouldn’t be smooth. They provide everything, it’s your duty toabsorb and use them accordingly.

Nursing is something that I do to live and to love. It is a privilege for me to work here inSingapore with people from all walks of life and provide them with care. After more than2 years of service here, I recently received my promotion last August 13 to become aSingapore Nursing Board Enrolled Nurse. It was a great gift I had for my mom during herbirthday on the same day as my promotion.

As a nurse, you do things for people that affect them in ways that they remember for alifetime. When people enter into the healthcare arena, they have certain expectations. And during the most intimate, challenging and frightening moments in their lives, nursesare right by their side. It’s an incredible and noble job. Being a nurse says somethingabout who you are as a person. As a nurse, there is an implication that you arecompassionate, caring, hardworking, ethical, and trustworthy – all are incredible attributesto be known for. If you exhibit these characteristics, they are part of your identity.Nursing as an identity means that you see yourself possessing the qualities of a nurseregardless of what job you are doing. I am a nurse and am proud to be one. It is a partof who I am and the values that I hold dear to me – integrity, lifelong learning, excellence, mastery and compassion.

Turn on the brighter side and follow your dreams!

HOUSE, M.D. A TV Series Wonder for Nurses

By: Jayvee V. De Guzman, RN

I have been watching the medical drama series House M.D. for 5 years in a row now. Forthose who haven’t watched the series, this TV program offers a great deal of information that

nurses can infer on. The teledrama is led by the witty and maverick actor Hugh Laurie whoalready has won an Emmy and Golden Globe award for an outstanding actor in a drama series.

It is the lead character Dr. Gregory House that leads his group of cunning diagnosticiansthat help diagnose almost-impossible diseases. The series also offers a few laughs from the toddler-

ish antics of Dr. House. He plays with his PlayStation Portable (PSP) while attending to patients, spits on the sterile field in the operating room, mocks patients with self-curable diseases, plays

pranks with other doctors and every other immature and childish thing you can think of. Even thoughHouse is loathed by his workmates and is also a Vicodin addict, I do love his portrayal of an antisocial

yet childish doctor. The real catch for nurses is that, they can unswervingly watch every sign and symptom of each

rare disease presented in every episode. The sign or symptom may be in eye-catching computer-generatedform or an actual simulated sequence by the patient themselves. The doctors will describe in full detail the progress of the diseaseand show how to treat it. But in the end it will still, almost always, be Dr. House to diagnose the enigmatic disease presented by thepatient.

In a nutshell, the series has offered me loads of information I haven’t read from nursing books. In a way it helped me bea better nurse by asking the health history of the patient meticulously, by being empathetic to them, and achieving a main goal ofboth nurses and doctors, the betterment of the patient.
