Think about it!

• Reflect on what we learnt last lesson about justified War.

• Can A Nuclear War ever be “Just”?

• Explain your answer carefully.

The Cold War (1945-1990)

• The development of nuclear weapons caused a Nuclear Arms Race to develop between the Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States. Despite being allies during the Second World War, their differences over political systems meant that for over forty years, the human race was faced with the possibility of extinction through Nuclear War.

The Cuban Missile Crisis 1963

• In 1963, the Cold War almost transformed into all out Nuclear War.

• The USA photographed Soviet Missiles being placed in Cuba, on the doorstep of the USA.

• The U.S.A ordered a blockade of Cuba.

• After the Missile Crisis, the USA and USSR began talks to begin multi-lateral disarmament.

• Albert Einstein

• "I don't know what kind of weapons will be used

in the third world war, assuming there will be a

third world war. But I can tell you what the fourth

world war will be fought with -- stone clubs."

A More Dangerous World?

• Although many sighed with relief when the Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soivet Union, some believe the world is more dangerous than ever before. The existence of Nuclear weapons and MAD, actually prevented their being a Nuclear War. However, some people do not care about the consequences of their actions, and if a Nuclear bomb was to fall into their hands, they would not be reluctant to use it.

• Who do you think these people are?

2) How can Nuclear War be unjustified?

3) Why are some people MORE worried about Nuclear war now, even though the Soviet Union collapsed?

4) Why do you think that countries are not willing to unilaterally disarm?
