• MM IL measurement is highly sensitive to the source launching conditions

• Example: IL of a connector varies greatly depending on whether a VCSEL or LED is used to perform the measurement

Source Launching Conditions Measured Connector IL

Overfilled (ex: surface emitted LED)

Over evaluated (IL = 1dB to1.5dB)

Slightly under filled (targeted conditions)

On target (IL = 0.5dB)

Under filled (ex: VCSEL or

edge emitting LED)

Under evaluated (IL = 0.02dB)

The Real Problem

TThe Real Problem

Image Source: Olivier Bouchard, AIRBUS Operations

There is a risk fiber defects such as connector misalignment and dirt may not be detected, if the MM light source used to perform the dB loss has “under filled” launching conditions

Page 7: NT Testing Times–Changes Ahead EVE G - FIA...©2015 Fibreoptic Industry Association The Manor House, BUNTINGFORD, Hertfordshire, SG9 9AB, United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)1763 273039 Fax:

• Before

– Previous launching conditions (requirements or definitions) didn’t provide repeatable launching conditions

– Variations of IL measurements were common and tolerated

• Tolerated because:

– Multimode networks were transmitting at relatively slow speeds and optical loss budgets were large (ex: Fast Ethernet had > 12dB for loss budget )

Why should anyone care?

Page 8: NT Testing Times–Changes Ahead EVE G - FIA...©2015 Fibreoptic Industry Association The Manor House, BUNTINGFORD, Hertfordshire, SG9 9AB, United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)1763 273039 Fax:

TNetwork Standards

The deployment of 40/100 Gig E is a major driver for EF compliance testing, where the link total link loss budget is only 1.5 dB at 850 nm on OM4 (50 µm) MM fiber

Page 9: NT Testing Times–Changes Ahead EVE G - FIA...©2015 Fibreoptic Industry Association The Manor House, BUNTINGFORD, Hertfordshire, SG9 9AB, United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)1763 273039 Fax:

TWhy should anyone change?

• Today

– Channel insertion loss requirements for modern high speed systems are much tighter.

• 1.9 dB for 40/100 Gig E (OM3 fibre - 100m)

• 1.5 dB for 40/100 Gig E (OM4 fibre – 150m)

• Therefore

– IL must now be measured precisely to ensure system performance

– The industry now needs repeatable and consistent IL measurements

– The response to this new need is the Encircled Flux Encircled Flux template for attenuation and loss measurements (IEC-61280-4-1/TIA-526-14B)

TWhat is EF?

• It is a new method to define the launch conditions of a light source

• EF measurement is based on the power distribution measurement on the connector end face of the light source, reference jumper or conditioner

TMM Wavelength Proposals

VCSEL-based EF is really useful for 50/125 at 850 nm

EF is not particularly useful 1300 nm

Small market for 62,5/125 at 850 nm

Conformance tests restricted to 850 nm

Use EF products

Test at 1300 nm only where required, EF irrelevant

• Multimode Testing– Most work likely to be on 50um fibre– Test at 850nm – use EF products– Only test at 1300nm when required (EF not critical)

• LSPM– Use the correct reference– Uni or bidirectional test– Treatment of results.
