Guests learnt the history of Muriel through an amazing presentation that taught us what brave and life threatening acts women in the 1900s went through to give equality and votes for women. Muriel was born in 1877 in Bowden, South Australia and in 1905 moved to London. In 1907 Muriel joined the Women’s Freedom League as a paid representative who ran their first ‘caravan tour’ where she travelled the country promoting and marketing ‘votes for women’. In October 1908 Muriel lead the infamous ‘Grille Incident’ in the House of Commons where her and two other suffragettes chained themselves to the grill of the women’s seating in protest for votes for women. This act gave Muriel the recognition as the first woman in history to speak in the House of Commons, London. Frances Bedford is the founder of the Muriel Matters Society, an activist in her own right, her passion is to learn more about Muriel’s history, locate artefacts and make contact with living relatives. To learn more about Muriel and the Muriel Matters Society please visit www.murielmattersociety.com.au If you would like further information, contact details for the various groups or would like to let us know of your group or association, contact Beccy Partridge at [email protected] or 08 8943 6000. A key focus for this forum is to develop an industry networking and professional development platform for university students and property professionals to learn, network and socialise. Their change in direction is to create opportunities which challenge the traditional format of networking and traditional thoughts on property in the NT. Future Directions has several events planned for the remainder of 2012 including the comeback of our speed networking in September 2012, several casual networking events and a recap of the Year in Property at their Christmas Party in November 2012. They are always seeking new members and would be interested to hear from all interested parties. In August, the Property Council of Australia will host a forum to discuss Property Finance – Facts and Myths, with Colin Robertshaw, National Head of Property Finance, Commonwealth Bank.
