NRMA Supports Riding Program

 

A $2500 grant from the 2013 NRMA Insurance Community Grants Program has supplied  bikes  and  safety  helmets  for  the  new  Wheels  Safety  and Maintenance program at Kempsey High School. The bikes had their first outing at the Year 11 Study Skills Camp in February and are now in constant demand for the school’s sports programs.

Merit Awards Presentation

NAPLAN Students  in  Years 7  and 9 will do  the National Assessment  Program  –  Literacy  and Numeracy (NAPLAN)  from  Tuesday  13th.  to  Thursday  15th.  May  2014.  The  results  of  the  tests  will  provide important  information about what each  student  can do, and will be used  to  support  teaching and learning  programs.  Parents will  receive  a  report  indicating  their  child’s  level  of  achievement.  Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.  

In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors.  In Years 7 and 9  there will be  two Numeracy  tests: one where a calculator  is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.  

Students who  are absent  at  the  time of  testing  can  complete missed  tests  at another  time during testing week. Individual students are not permitted to sit tests after Friday 16 May 2014. Additional information  about  NAPLAN  can  be  found  at www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent_Carer_support/index.html.

Y CARNIVAL 

Threatening skies were cast aside by a great Cross Country Carnival  last 

fortnight.  It  was  a  fantastic  day  for  running  and  walking  and  in  the 

afternoon  students  and  staff  enthusiastically  participated  in  fishing, 

surfing,  beach  soccer/touch,  lawn  bowls,  beach  volleyball,  beach 

cricket/frisbee/vortex, beach walking and sand modelling. Well done Mr 

Peisley, the organising staff and Year 12 (a great BBQ)!

University Roadshow Kempsey High  recently hosted  the Regional University Roadshow which brought  together 

representatives from the University of New England, Charles Sturt University and Southern 

Cross University to talk with HSC students. The presentation provided students with insights 

about  the  university  application  processes,  university  study,  living  costs,  early  entry, 

alternate entry programs, scholarships and what life is generally like at university.  Students 

had  the opportunity  to see how  regional universities provide  the personalised support  to 

their  students with  high  employment  outcomes  for  their  graduates.  Approximately  120 

students  from Kempsey High, Melville High and St Pauls College attended  the Roadshow.

Open Girls Soccer

 

The open girls soccer team travelled to Wauchope on 13th. March to play against Mellville 

High School. The day started with Demi Peirpoint the assistant coach (due to injury) running 

the girls through the warm ups and giving them some good advice. The team was captained 

by Antwinette Dunn who did an outstanding job at keeping the girls motivated, talking and 

playing in the Kempsey High spirit.  

Unfortunately, both our goalies were unable to make the game, so Bri Toby, Courtney Kelly‐

Scholes and Jaymie‐lea Thaidy, at the last minute stepped up to the challenge and all took 

turns in goal. They all did an outstanding job. Keeping the score down to 0‐2 at half time. 

Our girls  in the back worked extremely hard the whole game, with Suzie Griffen doing an 

outstanding job running the backs from the sweepers position. Suzie was awarded “woman 

of the match” and was also selected to trial for the Lower North Coast team.  Chloe Ennis, 

Megan  James  and  young  Sarah Honess  kept  up  the  pressure  on  the Melville  strikers  all 

game,  keeping  them  from  attempting  to  shoot  at  goal  until  the  last  10 minutes when 

Melville finally managed to score another 2 goals. 

Bec Shea and Jess Jones worked hard in the mids all day with the young girls Hayley Kesby, 

Katie Barnett and Kate McMillan stringing together a number of passes and scoring a goal 

for Kempsey High.   

Thanks girls for a fantastic day out. You did Kempsey High proud. 

 

Visiting from Louisiana 

 

Kempsey High School Agriculture and Marine Studies students came away totally enthralled from  lectures offered  to  them  last  fortnight  from visiting Rotarians  from Louisiana. Team Leader  of  the  vocational  visit,  Mark  Shirley  from  Louisiana  State  University  gave  an astonishing  account  of  his  work  as  a  commercial  alligator  harvester  and  farmer.  He conducts programs for crawfish, shrimp and crab farmers, alligator farmers and harvesters and fishermen. Mindy Hotard talked to an overflow audience about cattle reproduction and her research in using reproductive technology. She brought extensive experience from her family’s  crawfishing,  alligator  trapping,  commercial  cattle  and  abattoir  businesses.  The visiting  team  also  included  Keith  Normand  who  works  in  retirement  as  an  agricultural extension associate with Louisiana State University and Nick Simoneaux who worked at the Louisiana State University Rice Research Station.   Keith and Nick have extensive  industry experience – Keith  in working  in grain  cropping,  sugarcane,  cotton and  forage  crops and Nick  in  a  farm  supply  company  and  later  in  a  landscape  business  specialising  in construction, renovation and maintenance of athletic turf.
