Macquarie University Roadshow comes to Kempsey High
Kempsey High recently hosted the Macquarie University’s LEAP roadshow and worked with year 10 students from Kempsey and Wauchope High.
The roadshow is an initiative out of Macquarie University’s (MQ) LEAP (Learning, Education, Aspiration, Participation) program, which aims to broaden aspirations, create possibilities and actively support students from backgrounds that are traditionally under-represented in higher education to successfully participate and succeed at university.
The team of 10 hosted taster sessions for students, teacher consultations, and after hours parent and community forums. The “taster” sessions included a range of disciplines including cognitive science, clinical science, and ancient history and archaeology.
The team also talked about other important issues including scholarships, accommodation and indigenous support.
Of particular importance was building an understanding that the ATAR is not the only pathway into university. At Macquarie University, there are 11 different admission pathways.

PARENTS/CARERS
If your child is leaving school during school hours, please provide your child with a note before he/she leaves
home for school. When your child arrives at school, he/she is to present the note at the front office, so a leave pass can be processed. This will greatly assist the office staff in ensuring your child can be ready for you to pick them up when you arrive.
Attendance Processes for all students Every morning all students are required to complete a two step process to ensure their attendance is recorded. The steps involved are outlined below: Step 1 fingerscan on arrival at school—there are three machines located at the front office, the canteen and in ’B’ block Step 2 attend Rollcall (RAK) at the beginning of the school day to confirm attendance Step 3 if absent parents/carers will be notified via a text message from the front office Step 4 explain the absence by either; 1. respond to text 2. make a phone call to the office 3. send a note in with your child

The school welcomes information about your child’s health and whilst this information is asked for when you enrol your child it is also important that you let the school know when/if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops.
Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes should be provided to the school by parents/carers.
Please provide this information in writing to the principal.
This will greatly assist our school in planning for your child’s health and wellbeing.

School News
High School starts for Year 7 All the preparations by primary teachers and the Kempsey High School Transition team came successfully together last Wednesday when another group of eager Year 7 students had a great start of high school.
The transition program involved extensive consultations with partner primary schools, primary school visits by the transition team of Jarryd Hensley (Coordinator), Deanne Hughes (Year 7 Adviser), Sue Ring (Head Teacher Special Education) and Georgie Murphy (Aboriginal Education Officer) and two full day visits to Kempsey High School.
It did not take long for many of the Year 7 students to find the farm, and in particular, Olivia the pig.
Ground Improvements The full extent of ground improvements made during 2018, particularly the finishing touches made
immediately before the holidays became apparent as students commenced the 2019 school year last
week.
Led by Ross Westerman, students
participating in the Grounds
Improvement program learnt a
range of construction skills as well
as employability skills in teamwork,
diligence and problem-solving.
They completed numerous
benches, garden beds and
platforms to make the playground a
more inviting and comfortable
place to relax and socialise. It looks
just great. Well done to all
involved and special thanks to Mr
Westerman.
