Kempsey High Hosts First Lego League Challenge
KHS hosted a number of students from across the region on Friday 22 March for the First Lego League Challenge. Year 7 STEM robotics students represented KHS in the challenge and were judged on their core values, research project and robot design. It was fantastic to see so many students engaging in the challenge and putting their skills to the test, fostering innovative thinking for future careers.
The challenge is part of the STEM Share program coordinated for the Macleay Public Schools by Kath Lollback. Kath has been collaborating with STEM teachers and working with our students for several weeks, on computer programming and building all the Lego pieces used in the competition. A big thank you goes to all the students who competed on the day, the teachers who ran the programme and also all the students who helped build the Lego pieces and the competition tables and those who ran the Red Onion Café on the day. It was a
great joint effort and a very positive experience for all of our students. Thank you also to the many partners involved: CSU, Kempsey Shire Council, First Australia, NSW Cyber Security and STEM Share Community.

Ilford Photo Competition
Congratulations to Paige Willis Bourne who won a Certificate of Merit in the recent Ilford Secondary Schools Photographic competition. Paige won her certificate in the Digital Category with an image called “Tone” (shown right). The photo was an entry in last year’s Sculpture in the Gaol competition.
The students dressed up in theatrical costumes as the German internees did in Trial Bay Gaol during World War I for their weekly plays held on Saturday and Sunday nights.
The Theatre Company had 60 historical costumes and a considerable amount of clothing for men and women, all of which was made by the internees. There was also an orchestra. All women's’ roles were played by men.
Girls Academy - Harmony Day Celebrations The Girls Academy celebrated Harmony Day with a number of activities that celebrated that we are all different but we really are the same. Harmony Day was renamed Harmony Week to recognise diversity and inclusion activities that take place during the entire week.
Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Since 1999, more than 77,000 Harmony Week events have been held in schools, community groups, childcare centres and numerous local government agencies across Australia.

Girls Can Too! This is a written piece by some of the girls who attended the Girls Can Too workshop hosted by TAFE. When we arrived we sat down and were introduced to the activities for the day and enjoyed some morning tea. First up was construction. We were shown how to properly use power tools safely before we started to make a box, which we had to construct ourselves with a little help. We got to experience welding using a simulator in construction. The headset that we used allowed us to see what it would be like in a welding booth and what it would be like to weld in a straight line. Horticulture was up next. We walked through the greenhouse and got to inspect the irrigation system. After the walk through we got to plant our own plant and take it home in a cup. Our last class was automotive. We were shown how to change tyres with machinery and we were shown engines from cars that were being repaired. After our classes were finished we all gathered in the library for a panel discussion. The panel was made up of five incredible women from all different trades. They talked about their journey and the different struggles they have faced to become who they are today. Today reinforced the idea that women can do a job in a trade that a man usually does.

Kempsey High Girls Football NSW CHS Knockout On Thursday 7th March the Open’s Girls Football team competed in the NSW CHS Knockout competition which was held at Port Macquarie, with seven teams from Wauchope, Macksville and Port Macquarie competing on the day. From all the games we were lucky to have so many girls considered for the Lower North Coast Representative team, and in such a tight selection process this year Maddison Kerr was selected in the team, with the other girls getting an honourable mention. Congratulations to Maddison. We are looking forward to this team going places in the future with such a young group being able to mix it with the seniors from all the other schools. They stand in good stead for the future where, with a bit more practice as a team, the girls will make stronger links and be able to take it beyond the next level.
