East End Walks draws on the lives that wove their way through the capital’s streets and unsung heroes of the past come to life through David’s narrative of political and social history. He said: “It’s not about the famous people. People will hear stories about the lives of ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things to change their circumstances due to the challenges they faced.” He said that east London’s suffrage movement was particularly radical and militant, fighting not just for the vote but to improve working class women’s rights. David said: “Even with all the building going on at the moment, there are still indications of trade union activists, campaigners, health community development – it is not at all focusing on the domestic role. “In a way it’s optimistic. Also I will be able to show people the physical remnants of that history.” David was inspired by historian Professor Bill Fishman whose books showed how east London was portrayed in historical circles. He went on one of Bill’s walks and decided to continue spreading knowledge of the area. David, whose grandparents came from Poland and Ukraine as Jewish immigrants in the early 1900s, said: “I have been doing the walks in a serious systematic way for about seven years. “I have had a very long- standing connection with the East End through family, my work and studies.” He said: “About 30 years ago I went on Bill’s walk. When a lot of other historians were researching events that happened far away, he was saying to his colleagues that we have all this local history.” David’s next walk will be the Radical Jewish East End tour on Sunday, April 6.
