The NPPA is “the leading voice advocating for the work of visual journalists today,” according to its website and, after almost two years of communication, proposals and some competition, Grady welcomed the organization Jan. 10 to its official new headquarters. Mark Johnson, a photojournalism professor, was the leader of the initiative to bring the NPPA to UGA, knowing what the move could mean for both the university and the organization. The President of the NPPA, Mark Dolan, also said at the forefront of their decision to move were the immense opportunities that came along with being located in a university setting. “One of the reasons we wanted to come to the university was the opportunity to collaborate,” Dolan said. He said being at UGA would allow the NPPA to “reach out to many of the great minds,” make partnerships and work with other organizations, nonprofits, advocacy and law groups. Johnson initially proposed the move to the NPPA almost two years ago, and although the proposition was well received, the organization let other schools send in proposals as well. “So I was very excited one night back in August when President Dolan called and said we got the [nomination],” said Johnson at the welcoming reception on Friday. The  University  of  Georgia’s  Grady  College  of  Journalismand  Mass  Communication  has  long  had  a  reputation  ofexcellence,  proven  recently  by  stealing  the  No.2  spot  inthe  Radio  Television  Digital  News  Association  ranking  oftop  journalism  programs,  and  furthering  this  repute  as  theNational  Press  Photographers  Association  has  decidedto  relocate  their  headquarters  to  Grady.

UGA  was  the  vast  enthusiasm  that  everyone  at  UGAshowed.

“Frankly,  it  was  as  much  the  enthusiasm  as  anythingelse…Mark  Johnson  was  really  effective  incommunicating  how  excited  everyone  was,  and  he  haddone  so  much  homework.  And  it  was  not  just  Grady, everyone  was  excited,  and  that  was  reflected,"  Dolansaid.

The  move  will  open  up  opportunities  not  only  for  theorganization,  but  also  for  visual  journalism  students  andthe  relationships  and  experience  they  can  gain  throughwork  with  the  renown  association.

“Honestly  I  think  its  great  for  after  graduation,  having  thefact  that  the  NPPA  is  based  here  at  UGA  and  wanting  to

be  a  photojournalist  –  it  really  builds  the  reputation  of  UGA,"  said  Hannah  Burke,  a  magazine  journalism  fromWatkinsville.

Regardless  of  whether  or  not  Grady  students  are  interested  in  pursuing  visual  journalism,  the  new  headquartersprovides  an  array  of  unique  opportunities  that  will  expand  the  horizons  of  both  the  NPPA  and  students  alike.

As  Deale  said  “It’s  the  dawn  of  a  new  era  for  the  NPPA.”
