In 1988, North Americans were finally introduced to the BMW M3 originally created in 1986 in Germany, and its high-revving 2.3-liter inline-4 with 192-hp instantly became a legend on this side of the Atlantic. Marking the 25th anniversary, BMW has built a limited run of 30 2011 Frozen Gray M3 coupes for the U.S. market featuring a unique matte gray paint with deep metallic luster, as well as a unique Fox Red-and-black two-tone leather interior.

Also opening it’s doors in 1988 was Commerce Printing Services, a small business dedicated to quality and service. More than two decades later, they both continue their tradition of innovation and passion, one for driving and the other for printing.

I often find myself daydreaming about what it would be like to drop everything, sell off all my worldly possessions, and buy a dream car

to drive across the country. What would I buy? Where I would go?

I recently read about a middle-class man from Texas named Richard Jordan, who, after his girlfriend dumped him, sold his house and belongings to buy a brand-new Lamborghini Gallardo.* He spent the next year racking up 100,000 miles, driving all over the country, stopping off in different towns until he felt it was time to go. My favorite quote from him is, “The difference between being materialistic and not is when you actually use what you have.” Amen to that! While he probably now holds a record for the highest-mileage Lamborghini, I can only begin to comprehend what an incredible experience that would be.

When I bought my E46 M3 two years ago at age 24, I knew it wasn’t a wise financial decision—but then again, I didn’t care. Three months after I bought it, the market tanked, along with the value of my car. That didn’t keep me from putting 20,000 miles on it during my first year of ownership. I’ve loved every minute of it; money doesn’t buy happiness, driving my car does.

The M3 was my dream car; I had fantasized over it since its launch in 2001. I still have a poster of it that reads, “We looked perfection in the eye, and perfection blinked.” Having owned eight cars prior to the M3—VW, Subaru, Volvo, Acura, and Honda—I know that the slogan isn’t just marketing BS.

Now that I don’t have a commute and the car sits all week, I have to get out of the city to find open roads and

satisfy my Freude am Fahren urges. Aside from the Club driving tours, one of my favorite local drives is winding my way up to the top of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County just as the sun starts to rise. If you time it just right, you’ll get to the turn-off just as the park ranger is unlocking the main gate. As if the five miles of spaghetti tarmac with no traffic isn’t enough, the views of the city are spectacular. It reminds me of being ten years old again and seeing things with a sense of wonder—I love it. It inspires my urge to get out on the highways and byways of our grand country.

But then, as my daydreams wander back to the thrill of driving my M3 across the country, I think to myself, “How much better would it be in an M6?”

GGC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

President position: Donna Seeley

My name is Donna Seeley, and I am running for President of the Golden Gate Chapter. I am currently the GGC Vice President, and a GGC instructor for Car Control Clinics and Driving Schools. Since I’ve previously been Membership Chair and Secretary, and Tammi won’t let anyone else be Treasurer, I guess it’s time to run for President!

If elected, my biggest priority for the chapter is to get more people actively involved. The members who do attend our events have a lot of fun; I want to see more of you out there with us!

Best regards,Donna Seeley

Vice President position: Kelly Collins

Hi GGC, it’s me, again!

I’m your Communications Manager, member-at-large, and Driving School Program Manager.

I have a long history of volunteering with the various teams that keeps this large chapter running smoothly—so why stop now? I enjoy being a member of such a great club and hope to do my part as Vice President to keep it that way. Collins for VP in 2011!

Kelly Collins

Treasurer position: Tamara Hull

Still just a glorified bookkeeper, and still willing to do it for life.

Tamara Hull

Secretary position: Aleksey Kadukin

Dear Golden Gate Members,

I would like to ask for your vote as GGC Secretary in the upcoming election. I am currently the GGC Secretary (the person behind minutes you might see in Bombe or on the web site) and GGC Technical Session Coordinator. I’m very proud to be the member of the Board of the best BMW CCA chapter in the country! My first year as the Secretary was very educational and I’m working on delivering better and more entertaining minutes to you. I promise to continue keeping the communica-tion between our Board, chapter members, and BMW CCA National highly interactive.

Thank you for the support!Aleksey Kadukin

Member #315286

Membership Chair position: Ian Dunn

As Membership Chair for 2010, I worked to grow our social network presence and drive club awareness with BMW dealer-ships. I had the opportunity to attend the Chapter Congress in Dallas and participate in discussions with chapters from around the country about improving the club.

For 2011, I plan to continue building relationships with local BMW dealerships and experiment with several strategies targeted at increasing member retention

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY VOLUNTEER DAYFebruary 5, 2011, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 16800 Cory Drive, Morgan HillJoe Fant, [email protected]

GGC supports Habitat For Humanity and will be host-ing a volunteer work day on a building site in Morgan Hill. Come join us!

Over the past few years, our Golden Gate Chapter has sponsored two Habitat For Humanity volunteer work days at the Brokaw Road Habitat construction site in North San Jose. This time we’ll be at the Morgan Hill Habitat site, located at 16800 Cory Drive in Morgan Hill, which is close to 101 and E. Dunne. Six new homes are currently under construction at this site; they are expected to be completed sometime in the summer of 2011.

This type of project requires many volunteers; whether you are an old hand at construction or are just interested in learning something new, all are welcome to come help. Think you don’t have the skills needed? No worries, our Club members will be teamed with skilled Habitat leaders. These work days are a great way to have a lot of fun—and contribute to a very worthwhile cause at the same time. Construction volunteers must be at least fourteen years old. This is also a great way for your high-school-age students to get in some community-service volunteer hours!

The day will begin on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. with a brief mandatory safety meeting. The work day will end at 4:00 p.m. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothes with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. A sack lunch is advisable for the lunch break at noon, but there are nearby fast-food restaurants available.

If you are interested in participating, please RSVP to Joe Fant.

to—with an eye on my mirrors. No one dropped back, so I pressed on, trying to avoid the potholes (the road is quite rough in places). It’s an intense stretch, but great fun, and late on a Saturday morning there is little traffic to contend with.

It had been overcast the whole trip, but the sky finally cleared as we approached the beach. While some California beaches have a certain reputation where dress is concerned, Jalama is a different case: There, the clothing-optional aspect is a hooded parka. This day was short-sleeve weather, however, so we made the most of our 90-minute lunch stay allowed by the park.

The efficient crew at the Burger Shack got our meals out promptly, our group filling most of the small dining area. After lunch we visited for awhile and took some group photos near the beach. Then we said our goodbyes, a few opting to take advantage of the weather for a walk on the beach.

This driving route is a great run that some of us do on our own. The SLO-area group may have another burger quest again in 2012… if we’re still here, that is—the Mayans may have the last word on that!

Thanks once again to photo ace Frank Cowan, who went ahead on the route to get some of the shots as we passed by.

Roundabout to Ragged Point: July 12 Tour

B lazing new trails was the order of the day for the Cen-tral Coast touring group, making our way from Santa Margarita to the Paso Robles wine country, and finally

near Lompoc. The objective was reaching the famous Burger Shack—officially the Jalama Beach Store—and their excellent burgers, which are among the best in the state. We enjoyed our first visit last year so much that we decided an encore was in order.

Our meeting place was Panera Bread in Santa Maria, where we gather for most of our southern outings. Guests from out of the area included four cars from the Bob Bartel-led BMW Z group based in Los Angeles. Jerry Zack came down from Monterey in his Z3, Stefan and Laura Lee Dimitrov joined us from the Bay Area, and Guy Behrick drove from Bakersfield at the wheel of his 335i.

We rolled out of Santa Maria and made it to Highway 135 south, our group of fifteen cars staying intact despite numerous signals and roundabouts on our route. We cruised

along at near-legal speed to Harris Grade Road where we would turn west. But as we arrived, a large produce truck made the turn from the south—a potential spoiler for our first stretch of sporting fun. Now, there’s a mile-long-straight stretch before the Harris Grade Road turns sharply and heads up the grade; it was time to ask the ultimate question in a situation like this: “What would Zorba do?”

Let’s dance!

Foot to the firewall, I was around the offending truck in a flash, as were about half the group. No worries for the other half, either, as we had a planned photo stop a few miles ahead at the summit where we would re-group. However, our freedom was short-lived when we encoun-tered the several cyclists ahead of some timid SUV drivers afraid to pass them. Once at the summit, we stopped for a long chat and took pictures before setting out for Lompoc.

After Lompoc, we set off on the centerpiece of our drive, Jalama Beach Road, with its 150 turns. The road was clear and we made the most of it, driving as fast as I cared

F irst there was Coupefest, a gathering of BMW E9 coupes organized by George Naas in 1987. Suddenly Monterey was a gathering point

for 50 coupes—2800CS, 3.0CS and 3.0CSi, and perhaps even a few 2000 coupes—in various states of disrepair or concours splendor.

And the BMW CCA has been at Monterey ever since.

San Diego’s legendary coupe guru, Carl Nelson, led the charge into the ’90s, but Golden Gate member and Carmel resi-dent Ken Whitson—responsible for much of the engineering design of Laguna Seca—helped make our presence at Mon-terey more than just a parking-lot get-together, and more than

Festorics Weekend 2010

just a coupe party. Whitson organized tours and social events, and the 1993 Oktoberfest in Santa Rosa offered a perfect opportunity to introduce more members to the Historics: “Many of the folks who made the trip to Oktoberfest stayed over and journeyed to Monterey the following weekend, giving us a huge turnout,” he recalls. “The Backroads Tour through the scenic Big Sur area headed out that year with a rolling convoy of more than 50 cars!”

The high point was the 1996 Monterey His-torics featuring BMW as the honored marque, resulting in 1,500 members swarming the cor-ral organized by Whitson, Keith Wollenberg, and Kelly Kirkland. That year hundreds of BMWs took to the track for a parade lap that turned into a legend of tarmac delinquency, as row after row of two-by-two BMWs slowed... and slowed... to leave huge gaps, enabling them to race each other through a few turns before catching up with the leaders. (I don’t know if we were banned for life for such behavior, but BMW has not been the featured marque ever since.)

While the Golden Gate Chapter concen-trated on the growing corral, which had moved to a coveted site overlooking Turn Five, the Central California Chapter began to

provide a venue for the clean-car brigades, staking out grass near Concorso Italiano for an annual clean-car contest. By 2002, Kirkland had coined the term Festorics by creating the festorics.org website. For most members, the BMW CCA Festorics meant everything in Monterey that carried a roundel, but the two signature events—the GGC corral and the CCC concours—were technically separate.

In 2010, however, the Golden Gate Chapter established a corral at the Sears Point historic races instead of Monterey, so National stepped in to keep the Festorics going at Laguna Seca and continued their support of the concours, which in 2009 had become a stand-alone event at Rancho Cañada. For 2010, the

BMW CCA invited two other marque clubs to share the concours space, and the Porsche-Mercedes-BMW “Legends Of The Autobahn” event was born.

Anchored by an impressive display of vintage BMWs from the Gloria and Jim Smith collection, the BMW section of the Legends concours was an outstanding success. Mean-while, on the other side of the hill, the Fes-torics corral featured a line of Rolls-Royces (!) which serendipitously appeared as part of an American Express junket. Other fabulous BMWs on display in or near the tent included a rare BMW 1600GT, several coupes (includ-ing a batwing CSL), and a new B7 Alpina. From hot off the track we had two racers, Jeff Gerken in the iconic 2002 and Henry Schmidt in his rompin’ stompin’ 3.5CSL. And John Fitzpatrick, who races a pre-war 328, came by to let Festorics fans get an up-close gander at the most legendary racing machine in BMW’s history. —Satch Carlson

Samuel Huertas and Felipe Garcia came all the way from Colombia for the BMW CCA Festorics.

Jim Smith and Jerry Dotson show off the awards won by their pre-war vintage BMWs.

Sibylla Dangar-Willett came from Las Vegas with her hus-band, Chris, in a BMW 1600.

Murray Fowler polishes his 2800CS coupe—a car with over 400,000 miles on the clock! The coupe group started our Monterey tradition in 1987.

The North Bay region’s second driving tour of 2010 was a huge success, with nineteen cars turning out for an extensive tour

around the Napa and Sonoma wine country. The route was approximately 175 miles of wonderfully scenic mountain, valley, and vineyard vistas, centuries-old redwoods, up-close encounters with cows—and, of course, lots of fun, twisty roads.

The heritage of BMW was well represented with several 2002s—including a gorgeous 2002tii—current and previous-generation M3s—coupes and convertibles—M Z4s—a coupe and a roadster—current 5 Series, 3 Series… the list goes on! We all gathered on the edge of Sonoma at Starbucks. With a long day ahead of us, we were all eager to go, so our caravan departed right on time, cruising out of town on Highway 12 to Trinity Grade/Oakville Grade. What a beautiful sight our line of Bimmers was as we glided up and over the grade!

Once in Napa Val-ley, we worked our way over to the Sil-verado Trail and up to Calistoga. We passed some amazing winer-ies on our way—Sil-ver Oak, Plump Jack, and Mumm Napa, to name a few. If only we had time! (If interest is high, maybe next year we can arrange a win-

ery tour. I work in the wine industry, so this is definitely doable).

From Calistoga we went North on Highway 128 through the famous Alexander Valley to Geyserville. The vineyards were beautiful in their green, gold, and red colors of the harvest season.

With a short stretch north on Highway 101 to Dutcher Creek Road, our coast-bound driving adventure began; across Dutcher Creek Road to Dry Creek to Stewart Skaggs Road we went. After a short rest stop at Lake Sonoma, we continued our journey The 30-mile stretch to Stewarts point on the coast is twisty, fun, and perhaps a tad fast in spots—but always within the limit. It was a blast—fun was had by all!

It was 12:30 or so when we pulled into the Stewarts Point General Store for some freshly made deli

sandwiches, refreshing drinks, and delicious sweets. After a well-deserved hour-long rest, we headed for the unique part of our adventure. We backtracked a few miles to Tin Barn Road (a remote, twisty two-lane road) and then to King Ridge.

King Ridge is about how life used to be—single lane, no fences, slow, lots of farm animals in very close proximity and amazing vistas across the ridges. At least the beginning is like that! After the idyllic vistas, we descended toward

Cazadero, enjoying the very tight, twisty turns that lead to Cazadero and Highway 116. In Monte Rio we picked up the Bohemian Highway and enjoyed the coastal influence of the mid-afternoon. Our final leg took us south through the small towns of Occidental and Freestone before our end point at the Petaluma Fairgrounds.

We were all tired, but had big smiles after a day of taking the wine roads less traveled!

Page 11: November/December 2010 - ggcbmwcca.org · By Ian Dunn, Membership Chair Servicing BMW's in Campbell since 1990 408-379-7828 BMW Scheduled Inspections and Service Preventive Maintenance,

A twenty-year member of BMW CCA, Curt Ingraham described himself in 2002 as “a scattered California native: Placerville, Mt.

View, Inglewood, Carmichael, Fontana, Chico, Davis, Los Angeles, Redwood City, Davis, Walnut Creek (first 27 years), Oakland (second 27 years). I like the Bay Area.”

As an electronics engineer for Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley, he worked on several project teams, includ-ing the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) analysis project and NASA’s Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) mission. Over the years, these projects took him to French Guiana, China, and Switzerland—who knew engineering could be so exciting?

But he was better known to the BMW community as the ultimate go-to 2002 guy. The owner of the Bay Area’s famous Silicon Garage, Ingraham developed an upgraded radiator for 2002s, Bavarias, and E9 coupes. Rebuilt with new three-row high-efficiency cores, these units provided better cooling and fit without modifications—same size, mounting, clearances, fittings, and appearance.

On the social side, he created the 2002 Film Fest, which was shown to the Bay Area 02 Group in February 2004. It’s a collection of excerpts from commercial films of footage of BMW 2002s. By 2007, Curt’s list contained 72 movies; he claimed that the original collection included only a frac-tion of the available material, and his goal was to add more excerpts for a future 2002 Film Fest.

In addition, he was a hard-working volunteer for the Monterey Festorics and the Bay Area 02 group, including their annual swap meet. He organized Bay Area 2002 touring drives, including a caravan to the 2002 Colorado O’Fest, and

he was active on forums, giving advice and encouragement to hundreds, if not thousands, of “mature BMW” fans.

Married to Lisa Ferrari for only four brief years, Curt had been battling cancer in recent months. Sadly, we heard from Lisa that the battle was lost in the Fall:

I’m sorry to have to share the sad news that Curt Ingraham passed away on Sep-tember 28 after a long battle with prostate cancer. In the weeks prior, we were both deeply touched by the many messages of love and

support that we received.

While Curt enjoyed “playing” with cars, even more than that, he enjoyed the friends that he met along the way. The 02 community has been sharing memories and great stories about him on the BMW 2002 FAQ site. You can read them at www.tinyurl.com/curt2002.

While he did not want a funeral or memorial service held, I know he would love to be remembered in other ways: Take a (spirited) drive, try a new restaurant, go on a picnic, make a new friend, read a good book, donate to your favorite charity.

Lisa Ferrari

Various responses may indicate what Curt meant to the BMW community:

I figured it out. Curt’s heart was like his radiators: 50% more capacity than the regular model.

Everyone in our community should take in a little piece of Curt’s heart and remember to spread the niceness around. Help out a friend—or better yet, a stranger. Drop someone a thank-you note. Buy someone a cup of coffee. If everyone in our community would do this, there would still be heart left over.

Farewell, Curt. You made me realize what pure niceness is.Steve J.

Curt was one of the true class acts in our community. Most of us knew Curt for his radiators, but he’s also a significant behind-the-scenes supporter of the Bay Area 02 show and the Monterey Festorics.

Andy W.

My family and I have had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Curt and Lisa on numerous drives and get-togethers. Both are class acts.

I remember a drive through the North Bay with the local 02 bunch. My son was playing with their little dog. Curt took the time to speak with my son and answered all the silly questions six-year-olds ask.

Curt was so incredibly polite, and humble—a heck of a man with lots of integrity. I’m glad my son met such a wonderful, open-minded person.

Take care, Lisa. You’re in our prayers. Cris, Michelle, and Kieran

Curt was a first-class individual. When I first joined the FAQ forum, he would take time to email me and explain things in a detailed, patient manner. I never felt that I was being lectured to or scolded for not researching the answers thoroughly enough. I never met Curt in person, but still considered him to be a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

ought2 in Maine

I have known Curt since the first Bay Area 02 gathering and got to know him well over the many years we spent together through our mutual love of wrenching. A finer person, a better friend or loved one, would be very hard to find. Curt, I am so proud to call you my friend. I will always cherish our memories. I will honor you by striving to a better person and friend to others. You are truly a great man.

Curt, Lisa, and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Arne Carlson

Curt was one of the guys who showed me that being involved in the car hobby was not really about the cars, but about the people—especially people like him. In these days of Internet machismo, obsession with dyno numbers, or focus on who would win a street race, it was more than refreshing to meet a true gentleman whom you looked forward to spending time with, regardless of the topic.

Curt was a true friend, a credit to the 2002 community, and I’m proud to have known him. He will be missed.

Nick Pon

Curt was one of the first guys who helped me out when I bought my 2002 in 2008; like so many others here, I bought one of his radiators. Now it feels like a part of Curt will always be riding shotgun with me.

Godspeed, my friend.Bailey Taylor

I just heard the news that Curt had passed. Apparently they needed high-quality three-core radiators in heaven.

Curt was a friend and a gentleman to one and all. He was an asset to our community and will be sorely, sorely missed. My deepest condolences to Lisa and his entire family.

Very sad indeed.Scottie Sharpe

I only got to meet Curt once. I asked him to do some electrical work on my 02; I had a bunch of small but irritating issues like a non-working dome light. Anyway, he said he would only do it if I stayed the day and did the work under his guidance. I was initially taken aback by his request, since I have no skill in this area, which I explained to him. He insisted, and I spent perhaps one of the most satisfactory days of my life with him. Learning to detect and fix electrical issues was extremely rewarding, and Curt was an amazing teacher.

We talked all day about everything—except 2002s, interest-ingly enough. I discovered that we both were recovering from cancer and shared similar book interests. This led to Curt sending me home with a book from his personal library and me sending one of mine to him.

A good and honest man. He is missed.DMA

In a fitting tribute, the 02 forum members were invited to the Curt Ingraham Memorial Drive in November, a repeat of one of his most popular Bay Area tours. “We had such a great time in 2003,” said one member, “that we felt it was time to do it again!” (A nice video of the day can be found here: www.vimeo.com/16609430.)

Appropriately, at the SoCal Vintage BMW meet in October, organizers honored the memory of Curt Ingraham by presenting the Curt Ingraham “Coolest Car” Award to a car selected by Jackie Jouret, editor of Bimmer Magazine. She selected Kevin Kolozsvari’s 1972 3.0CSi—a beautiful car befitting Curt’s memory.

Even if you didn’t know Curt, Lisa’s note is good advice: “Take a (spirited) drive, try a new restaurant, go on a pic-nic, make a new friend, read a good book, donate to your favorite charity.”

Golden Gate Chapter, BMW CCA Board Meeting Minutes

By Aleksey KadukinSecretary, GGC BMW CCA

MINUTES

October 14, 2010Location: Original Nick’s Pizzeria & Pub, San MateoBoard members in attendance: Ian Dunn (membership chair), Kelly Collins (member at large), Tammi Hull (presi-dent and treasurer), Aleksey Kadukin (secretary), Donna Seeley (vice president)Board members not in attendance: NoneOther members in attendance: Rodger Ball (2011 autocross co-coordinator), Canyon Chan (CCC co-coordinator), Jeff Cowan (Pacific Region VP), Mike Mills (past GGC presi-dent), Jeff Roberts (2011 autocross co-coordinator), Mike Zampiceni (social events coordinator)7:11 p.m. meeting called to order by HullTreasurer report (Hull):

▪ We have money.Driving-events report (Hull):

▪ 2011 autocross program will be led by Rodger Ball and Jeff Roberts. Mentoring and transition process from the current team had been started already. Funny stories about management experience in general shared across the table. Truck insurance papers ownership is in ques-tion—Hull will follow up. New team will decide on dates and locations soon and call for volunteers by e-blast. ▪ CCC: we have one more event this year: October 16. Sign-in rate is okay; we have enough people to cover the expenses already. Hull asks Mills if he would like to lead CCC program since Bob Goebel has stepped down; Mills takes an observer role for now. We need to find a replacement for CCC team members who are leaving. ▪HPDS: Thunderhill school is scheduled for November; initial sign-in rate is a bit slower than expected. We are looking for additional ways of advertising our HPDS. Social networks such as Facebook is one idea; Kadukin volunteers to advertise the event on car enthusiasts’ online forums.

Social-events report (Zampiceni—he’s back!):

▪▪ The recent Italian tour was a success; people liked it a lot.

▪▪ More tours are coming.

▪▪ Zampiceni is working on the next year’s plan. Museums tours are part of it, as are railroad and aviation museums.

▪▪ Zampiceni would like to schedule two-day tours that would bring tourists to destinations further out—the Sierras, for example.

▪▪ Mark Feinberg (North Bay area rep) had a good wine-country tour recently.

▪▪ Cowan is organizing and leading one more tour at December 5. It’s a wine tour which will include a catered-lunch buffet at a winery (that explains why people are so enthusiastic about that one!).

▪▪ Winter party is scheduled for February 19 at Astaria Restaurant, San Mateo. The late date gives us a better time frame for proper advertising.

▪▪ Kris Linquist (South Bay area rep) is organizing a Meet

& Greet event for December 14.

▪▪ Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Day is scheduled for February 5. We need volunteers.

▪▪ 2011 Palo Alto Concourse d’Elegance has recently undergone unexpected organizational restructuring. We need to know what is going on and if they are still considering BMW as featured marque—if so, we need to start advertising soon.

▪▪ National Board meeting is coming to our area! A lot of GGC board members are planning to attend.

Area-reps report (Seeley):

▪▪ Seeley got an extensive report from Paula Williamson (North Bay area rep). The area had two great ladies-only tech sessions, two successful tours, and one Meet & Greet.

Tech-session report (Kadukin):

▪▪ Milt’s Service Garage tech session in Vallejo was a success with a good attendance.

▪▪ Kadukin received a contact from Hull for Barry Hyde, owner of M&M Auto Werkes,. Kadukin is talking to him about tech-session possibility.

▪▪ Cowan reminds Kadukin to contact Big O Tires guys soon.

Secretary report (Kadukin):

▪▪ 2011 chapter board election is coming and we need candidate statements.

▪▪ The Global Tuner Grand Prix is coming to Laguna Seca late October. Kadukin thought about car corral initially, but put it on hold for this year. Kadukin will attend the event and report his impressions to the board.

Membership-chair report (Dunn): ▪ We have 4,670 members and associates! ▪ Dunn visited five East Bay BMW dealerships and distrib-uted Bombe and BMW CCA Membership cards (Cowan noticed people reading Bombe at Stevens Creek dealership). ▪ Hull proposes Club brochures and fliers distribution at San Francisco International Auto Show in November. Everybody cheers the idea!

Communications report (Collins): ▪ We are still having problem with the automated process for updating new-members’ info. Dunn will send new-members info to Collins by e-mail so we could add them to e-blast distribution list. ▪ Kris Linquist is our new webmaster and will help us with technical situations. ▪ We could implement a different way of handling and distributing e-blasts. ▪ The current website is broken and not functioning well enough. ▪ Bombe submission deadline for November/December combined issue is October 15. ▪ Facebook page could use some help with event updates.

of 10:00 from Tina’s in Santa Margarita when I arrived. With its proximity to the fine trails that connect with Highway 58, Tina’s is a popular stop for both two- and four-wheel enthusiasts.

In addition to the eleven regulars from our regiment, Sam Burg drove his Ferrari F360 Spider with son Zack rid-ing shotgun. Paul DiMauro of Sharkfest fame was on his first driving tour with us in an E36 convertible. This group is a pleasure to work with and readily pitches in to keep our events running smoothly.

Our journey took us east from Santa Margarita on Highway 58, continuing toward Pozo, where 58 turns north. A few miles past that junction, we turned left for our first venture on Las Pilitas Road, a seven-mile stretch that traverses the west side of Lake Santa Margarita. It’s a great road—none too wide, but in good shape, with many turns and elevation changes. Much of it is under a canopy of trees—a nice change from the usual landscape of the area.

Las Pilitas ends at Park Hill Road, where we turned left and then made a quick right on Huer Huero Road, an old favorite that is also fairly tight and twisty. It runs for six miles back to Highway 58 and is usually part of our route for drives through Pozo.

We turned east for the eight-mile run on 58 to La Panza Road, the start of the cruising portion of our drive. La Panza is slightly downhill for most of its ten-mile run south to Highway 41 (near Creston), and offers beautiful scenery with a number of vineyards and estate properties. The Coastal Range is visible in the distance on clear days, as it was this day. We continued across 41 and on into Paso Robles, the name of the road changing first to Creston Road and then Linne Road, offering more wine-country scenery.

Joining us in Paso Robles was Pete Snyder in his Z3, as we made it through town without anyone getting separated from our group. We trundled along with traffic for the two miles to the Adelaide Road turnoff, which heads west through the Paso Robles wine country. Adelaide is uphill at the start, with enough gentle curves to make it interesting; then it

tightens up as it levels off for some roller-coaster portions that are very entertaining.

We caught up with two locals in pickups on this stretch, but both pulled over to let our group pass—a politeness not uncommon here. We simply followed at a respectful distance, no weaving, flashing lights or other juvenile tactics necessary.

We turned south on Vineyard Drive just past the Halter Ranch tasting room, a very scenic and entertaining road that offers a little of everything, curves of all kinds, and several elevation changes. It was clear sailing as we continued to High-way 46, where the odds—or perhaps karma—caught up with us. Traffic was expected, but we were doomed, stuck behind a very old camper and an SUV pulling a trailer—neither of them willing (or able) to go more than 55. That became moot when we encountered thick fog near the summit of the Coastal Range, with visibility only a few hundred feet at times.

So we plodded along behind our slow-moving tormen-tors until we reached Highway 1 south of Cambria and turned north—lots of traffic there, but most of it was gone when we passed San Simeon and Hearst Castle. The fog had given way to marine overcast, which usually breaks up by noon… or sometimes not, as on this day.

Our final destination for the day was lunch at the Ragged Point Inn. Once there, we found the staff very accommodating, and we had a great lunch. It was apparent that we were in good company when I walked out and saw a new Ferrari 599 GTB parked in front.

After lunch we said our goodbyes and headed for home, and I pulled over at a viewpoint a few miles north of Ragged Point to reflect on a great day. We had found some new roads for future driving adventures, especially the “cruising” portions when we ease off the throttle to smell the roses, and maybe a cabernet or two next time.

SLO area tours continued from page 13

. . . t he odds— or perhaps karma—caught up with us.

will have to be addressed at some point. But for now, the car will be preserved and enjoyed.

This means work can really begin on Chuck the 1981 528i.

The new dashboard and center console on that car—sense a trend here?—went in before even a screwdriver was unleashed on Max. Take it from me: Do not have two old BMW interiors ripped apart at the same time! After a while, Ziploc bags full of screws all look the same. Strangely-shaped metal brackets—painted black, of course—get lost in the piles. You find yourself poaching parts from one car to the other, and then it gets confusing. You’re filled with remorse because you think maybe you’re favoring one car over the other—and you probably are.

After hammering around Road America, a course I had never driven, I decided I needed another track-day car. The last one, a Dinan-infused 1987 325iS named Hugo, had spoiled me at places like Thunderhill and Sears Point (I refuse to call it Infineon). Max is, quite frankly, too old for extended bouts of such antics. Still, I missed driving on race tracks.

Chuck is going to be the new driving-school toy, much to the consternation of Mr. Arnold: “E12s don’t turn in! They’re too heavy! They flex more than a Bavaria or an E28!”

Perhaps. But the weight issue can be addressed. Batter-ing-ram aluminum bumpers can be replaced with chrome jewelry from our European friends. The boat-anchor autotragic transmission will be replaced with proper row-your-own box. The air-conditioning hardware is already in a landfill somewhere.

The suspension can be made good enough—particularly after putting the car on a diet—and there are ways around chassis flex if it gets to be a real problem. Besides, what else am I going to do with the car? It’s part of the family—like Max—and I’m not allowed to get rid of it.

It also happens to have a fresh 3.5-liter M30 Big Six with modest U.S.-spec compression. Which means it’s ripe for turbocharging! One car I noticed at Oktoberfest was a sinister black E12 with later Motronic fuel injection and a Turbocharging Dynamics blower on it. Thank you, sir, for the proof of concept I was looking for. Now I know the Motronic manifold tucks in next to the stock brake booster, and that there is enough room for turbo plumbing.

In other news, Otto the 1991 318is went away. My aging back was having none of putting Baur in and out of the back seat. Next time around I’ll tell you about the nightmare of selling a car on Craigslist, and then trying to find a suitable replacement.

MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE WRENCH...

PILGRIMAGING IN A BAVARIA

G ett ing rock-star parking on a perfect August evening in front of the bar at Sieb-kens, one of American racing’s holiest of

shrines, didn’t suck.Somehow Max the 1972 Bavaria came together for our

big outing to Oktoberfest 2010 in Elkhart Lake, Wiscon-sin. We were planning on driving out from Minneapolis Wednesday morning and returning Saturday after the Bimmermeet. Final car preparation didn’t quite come down to Tuesday at midnight, but it was Saturday when the new clutch master cylinder was installed.

Everything else was done by then. The new dashboard and center console—sporting an ‘80s-vintage Blaupunkt tape deck feeding MB Quart speakers—were fitted. All four doors had come apart and anything that moved inside of them was lubricated. The door panels themselves now sported handmade birds-eye-maple trim. The pretzeled trunk hinge was replaced. Strangely, the exhaust thump seemed to have taken care of itself; best not think about that one too much.

My buddy Mark Pedersen and I did, in fact, depart Wednesday morning—albeit several hours after we had planned. My wife Chris and our then-five-month-old son Baur were flying into Milwaukee that afternoon and driving up with friends in time for a late dinner at the Osthoff hotel. Mark and I arrived early enough for both of us to get checked into our respective hotels before planting ourselves at Siebkens.

The cars camped out around downtown Elkhart Lake were astonishing; you name it, there were several examples of every era and style parked along the streets. Closest to the patio at Siebkens were a beautiful E30 M3, a menacing 8 Series, and an ultra-rare BMW Z1 that had just cleaned up (no pun intended) at the Oktoberfest Concours. And camped right in front by the ice-cream hut was one tatty—but honest—1972 Bavaria, which, considering its jaunt through the middle of Wisconsin at the height of summer, was covered in remarkably few dead woodland creatures.

All told, over five days Max covered a little over 1,000 miles. That included the drive to and from Elkhart Lake, some very spirited backroads pounding on the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive, and ten or twelve laps of Road America with four people aboard and a trunk literally stuffed with Bavaria parts hauled in from California by Bill Arnold and Tammi Hull (thanks again, guys!). Of the many memories, one of the brighter ones is of my friend Jesse in the back seat repeatedly asking, “How old is this car?” as we gracefully arced from corner to corner and up the front straight of Road America.

What broke? Nothing except for the sunglass clips for my glasses on the morning we left for home. Piss me off; damn things were too dainty for duct tape.

While old cars are never really finished, Max is done—for now. Sure, the window-channel felt never got replaced, the tie rods are a little tired, and the surface rust on the body

▪ Hull gives special thanks to Mills for great help with our web business after Mark Dadgar’s retirement. ▪ Website is moving to the new hosting soon. ▪ Mills took a look at our website’s internal structure and was not impressed. Actually, he was impressed just at the fact that the website is working at all. (Mills shares the story of his attempt to update some info on the website using a lot of technical and not-so-technical terms.)

Vice-president report (Seeley): ▪ Seeley received more submissions for the calendar this year than ever (six photos of different CSi’s, for example)!

President report (Hull): ▪ None

Miscellaneous: ▪ Cowan proposes that our chapter hosts BMW CCA’s Oktoberfest (O’Fest) for 2013. Cowan will investigate requirements for chapter involvement with the event. Hull would like to see a proposal from National first. Sacramento and Central California chapters could help with the event activities. O’Fest is a week-long Club event which requires enormous commitment from the hosting chapter. It could be done in conjunction with Festorics. Cowan will get more details. Hulls wants to see detailed plan before decision is made. ▪ December board meeting location changed to Gau Poang Restaurant, San Mateo.

Meeting adjourns at 9:04 p.m.

Our second ladies’ tech session was held at Berkeley Motor Works in Albany on September 11. A friendly group of six women attended the session, which

covered a lot of ground. Coffee and cake got everyone off to a good start—after all, what better way to start off than with caffeine and sugar, right?

Mike, our leader for the session, went over how to check fluid levels, read gauges correctly, and check tire tread, just to name a few subjects. To give each of us a better understanding, he went into a lot of excellent and easy-to-understand detail about how things actually work. Mike explained how the cooling system cools the engine; why it is so impor-tant to change the car’s engine oil regularly—and what happens when you don’t—what the suspension actually does; what that clunking noise on braking in an attendee’s car might be; how to tell if the engine belts are cracked. All sorts of questions were asked and answered in easy-to-understand layman’s terms.

Thanks to Mike and his team at Berkeley Motor Works for volunteering their time, once again, on a Saturday.

Ladies’ Tech: Sept. 2010By Paula Williamson, North Bay Rep Dear Paula,

Thank you for organizing the ladies’ tech session. It’s a wonderful idea, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Mike is an excellent teacher in all ways; he obviously knows his business—and he is a master at managing a group of very curious ladies! Your own expertise of the BMW product and services and your skill at keeping the class moving were apparent and appreciated.

I learned from both of you. I now understand that I must be more proactive in managing my car’s maintenance.

The gift bags and door prize were a special treat—so over-the-top nice of both of you! I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Cheers, Catherine Tierney

Dear Paula,

Thank you so much for the Saturday session. Thanks to Mike, too! I’d never looked under the hood of my car before that day. I got a lot of positive things out of the session. It was really interesting and fun!

All the best,Katrina K.
