The Juggling Act Kelly Carter

Mom to 4 year old twin girls &

MMM founder and president

Fall is approaching. I can feel it in the air. It’s time for back to school, back to

work, and back to scheduled activities. Let the juggling act begin.

My limit was one sport or activity for the twins. Last school year, Ashley and Brooke did gymnastics and loved it, so we will continue. Then, they realized their friends were doing ballet. Of course, they wanted to do ballet too. With peer pressure from my mommy friends and encouragement from the girls, I caved and

registered them for ballet. It’s only a half hour, once a week. No biggie, right?

Then, my husband, Jim, asks… what about swimming lessons? Hmmmm?!?! My

limit was one…

So, in addition to work, school, ballet, gymnastics and possibly swimming, I will be looking forward to apple picking, pony rides, monthly MMM mom’s night out dinner meetings, the MMM girls overnight, the MMM fall sale, warm baths once the kids

are in bed, and a good book as I drift off to sleep.

Fall is on the way! Let the juggling act begin. It’s all good.

Hello from your MMM Children's Librarian! My name is Susan

Hayes. I'm a mom to 16 month old twins, Jack and Selina, and

my background is in education. I have been an elementary

school teacher for nine years. I am pleased to announce that

we have recently

received some great titles in

our MMM Children's

Library about multiples. We

have stories about triplets, siblings with twins, identical and

fraternal twins, fiction and non-fiction, potty training,

ABC's, nursery rhymes and books on CD! There are also a

variety of reading levels for babies through

elementary age.

At the last meeting, I gave a presentation on the importance of reading at home with

our kids, and some fun things we can do with books and writing. In a nutshell, I highlighted

some benefits of reading to our young ones, including heightening language awareness,

increasing vocabulary, expanding children's horizons by reading about different places,

animals and people, and sharing some bonding time with our family. We should also practice

asking our children questions about their favorite parts of the story and favorite

characters. This aids in comprehension skills down the road! When our kids are small, we

can engage them in reading by using touch-and-feel books, board books, rhyme books and

flip books. Songs and rhyming help our children recognize word patterns, and allow them to

join in the reading fun even when they can't yet read the words.

I will bring all our new books to each meeting. If you would like to borrow a book or two,

we lend them out on a monthly basis. Come and check out a book! There are some stories,

tips and games for reading at home on these websites: www.ed.gov., www.scholastic.com.

and www.pbskids.org. Happy reading!

BIG SISTERS

Contact: Megan Leonardis We offer a "Big Sister" to paid MMM members that are pregnant and/or are new moms of multiples during the first 3 months after giving birth. We pair you up with a member that has multiples like you have (or will have). The idea is for the big sister to check in with her little sister often— to offer support, advice, help, etc. as needed. Then she reports to the group at each meeting on how her "little sister" is doing. The little sister can also contact her big sister as needed. Please contact Megan to get hooked up with a "big sister" today! If your multiples are over a year old and are interested in becoming a “big sister” contact Megan today!

CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN

Contact: Susan Hayes

Multitudes, Multiple Moms Mingle newsletter, happily accepts suggestions, tips, articles and information for publication from members... although we do hold editorial rights. ;) We did our best to get all of the information correct and up-to-date. If you notice something that is incorrect or was left out, please let us know.

A special thank you to Dr. Robert Kiltz, CNYFC, for his kindness and generosity with the printing of the Multitudes newsletter.

Please submit information and materials to Leslie Petty or Penny Meskos by the 10th of the month prior to publication.

What is the flu?

The flu (influenza ) is an infection of the nose,

throat and lungs caused by influenza viruses.

Flu viruses cause illness, hospital stays and

deaths in the U.S. each year. There are many

different flu viruses and sometimes a new flu

virus emerges to make people sick.

What is novel H1N1 flu?

It is a new and very different influenza virus that

is spreading worldwide among people. The new

virus was called “swine flu” at first because it has

pieces of flu viruses found in pigs in the past.

However, novel H1N1 virus has not been de-

tected in pigs in the U.S.

How serious is the flu?

The flu can be very serious, especially for

younger children and children of any age who

have one or more chronic medical conditions.

These conditions include asthma or other lung

problems, diabetes, weakened immune systems,

kidney disease, heart problems and neurological

and neuromuscular disorders. These conditions

can result in more severe illness.

How can I protect my child against the flu?

• Get a seasonal flu vaccine for yourself and

your child to protect against seasonal flu

viruses.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue

when you cough or sneeze. Avoid touching

your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread

this way. Teach your child to take these

actions too.

• Keep surfaces like bedside tables, surfaces

in the bathroom, kitchen counters and toys

clean by wiping them down with a house-

hold disinfectant.

• Wash your hands often with soap and wa-

ter, especially after you cough or sneeze.

What should I use for hand cleaning?

Washing hands with soap and running water for

as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday, twice,

will help protect against many germs. When

soap and running water are not available, wipes

or gels with alcohol in them can be used.

Is there a vaccine to protect my child from

H1N1 flu?

A vaccine against novel H1N1 flu is being pro-

duced and will be available soon. More informa-

tion about the upcoming vaccine is available on

the CDC website at www.CDC.gov.

What can I do if my child gets sick?

If your child is 5 years or older and otherwise

healthy and gets flu-like symptoms consult your

doctor as needed and make sure he/she gets

plenty of rest and drinks enough fluids. If your

child is younger the 5 or of any age and has a

medical condition as mentioned previously, call

your doctor or get medical attention. This is

because younger children and those with chronic

medical conditions may be at higher risk of seri-

ous complications from influenza infection. Talk

to your doctor early if you are worried about your

child’s illness.

**This information reprinted from the CDC. For

additional information regarding influenza, symp-

toms, and treatment visit www.cdc.gov or
