Worshiping Christ, the Perfect Doer of the Law

Prelude Chorale from Contata No. 140 “Wachet Auf ” J.S. BachVirginia McGuigan, flute; Carrie Smith, piano

Welcome

We Prepare Our Hearts for Worship O God, Most Holy Are Your WaysKyrstan Langer & Deborah Roby

O God, most holy are your ways, and who like you deserves my praise? You only do such wondrous things, the whole wide world your glory sings;Your outstretched arm your people saved, though sore distressed and long enslaved.

*God Calls Us to Worship Jeremiah 31:31-34 Reverend Scott Kerens

Pastor: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. People: But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Pastor: And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. All: For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

God Exposes Our Need Matthew 7:24-27 Reverend Russell St. John

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

We Confess Our Sin

*Christ Provides for Our Need Galatians 3:10; 13 All who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us – for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.”

*We Sing with Glad Hearts! No. 524 Thy Works, Not Mine, O ChristCarrie Smith, piano; Rod Cunningham, bass

*God Reveals His Blessings! Psalm 119:1-7 Pastor: Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord!People: Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! Pastor: You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. People: Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes!Pastor: Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. All: I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules.

Adult Sunday School

9:00 am | Lecture Hall | Meaning of Marriage Pastor Bill Myers, Elder Frank McGuigan

With help from Tim & Kathy Keller’s book, The Meaning of Marriage, Pastor Bill Myers and Frank McGuigan will team-teach a class on the essence, mystery, and glory of God’s design for marriage, and the inherent blessings and challenges it brings to flawed human beings. This class is for all singles, marrieds, and single-agains. Bring your hard questions!

9:00 am |Room 213 |1 Samuel | Bill Hammond The book of 1 Samuel focuses on three principal characters: Samuel, Saul and David and deals with the effects of sin and holiness in relation to the people and their leaders. We will be studying the well-known and not so well-known stories within 1 Samuel and how their themes and lessons can be applied to our lives today.

10:45 am |Lecture Hall|Politics and Providence | Dr. Robert Stuart What influence did the Bible and ministers have on the founding of the United States? And what was the “Black Regiment” that caused fear and frustration for England during the Revolutionary War? This course will look at the influence of Christianity and particularly Presbyterianism in the early history of America. We will explore Scripture to see what God says about his people being involved in the politics of a nation. A perfect class for the election season.
