Zero and Beyond

Zero Means

• Zero Incidents, injuries, property damage, occupational illnesses

• Anything other than Zero is unacceptable

Beyond Means

• Goal is to reach Zero and sustain Zero

• Take philosophy into our homes and communities

• Is a process that aims at Zero

Managing Excellence Through Active Leadership in Safety (METALS)

• Safety is:

• Caring – Care about your co-worker

• Empowerment – People are given the authority to act

• People – Make safety happen

• Behavior/Attitude – People’s attitudes and behaviors determine the success of the safety process

• Responsibility- People are expected to at

• Accountability – People are accountable for their actions

• Trust

• Communication – be an active listener – Interact with employees

• Value – Different than a priority – does not change due to outside influences

• Education – Understanding is the key to effective action

• Involvement – The degree of success achieved in managing safety is directly proportional to the degree of employee involvement in the safety process

• Commitment – Ownership of the belief that each employee is responsible for their safety and the safety of their co-workers.

Environmental

• Reclamation Permit – Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology

• Permit allows for construction of the DUSEL

• Following closure of Henderson mining operations, site would be considered by the division to be a non-mining industrial site.

• Water Permits – Colorado Water Quality Control Division

• Permits in place for anticipated life-of-mine water quality

• Changes in contaminants caused by DUSEL would be handled through permit modification

• Air Permits – Colorado Air Pollution Control Division

• Permits are in place for DUSEL development

• Changes in contaminants caused by DUSEL would be handled through permit modification

• Permits are transferable in post-mine setting

• Other Permits and licenses – Various agencies

• May be adjusted as necessary to acknowledge nature and scope of DUSEL operations
