First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2011

Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.

— Mark 13:33

My dear friends in Christ, Today we begin the new liturgical year with the season of Advent. This is also the time when we begin to imple-ment the New Roman Missal! In the gospel we are asked to be “ALERT and WATCHFUL!” With so much anxiety fill-ing our minds and hearts about the new experience, these words of Jesus are perfect source of wisdom and peace! We pray for humility and openness so that we can together celebrate the beauty of God’s love in the mystery of the Eucharist! As the days become shorter, and the nights longer, the Church prepares to celebrate the coming of Christ. The General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar state: “Advent has twofold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming to us remem-bered; as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful expectation.” There is no question that Advent is not an easy season to celebrate. There are many reasons for this. And the biggest reason is that this time of joyful expectation is overshadowed by Christmas preparations. That’s why it is important that we need to focus and slow down. Our internal preparation is very important. Our heart must be freed from darkness and hatred, resentment and selfishness, arrogance and pride. This is time to lower ourselves in humility before our God. We need to let go of all these things that will prevent us from welcoming Christ in our heart. When we let go, we make room for Christ! The four weeks of Advent invite us to be on guard, to watch, to be ready, and to prepare. Everything about our worship space reflects the season. This is one way of reminding us about the importance of preparation. As I said many times before we can easily be caught up in the external preparations of Christmas. I am not saying that we don’t do our Christmas shopping. What I am saying is that we should not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by it. Have time for prayer and reflection! Search your heart. Find meaning and fulfillment in our preparations and cele-brations. I hope that we take our preparations very seriously. And I pray that we prepare our heart. Christ must have a place in our heart. He must be our only possession. The gospel of Matthew reminds us, ”For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” The coming of the Son of Man is not about commercialism or materialism but it is about our salvation and God’s love revealed to us in Christ. What is important? Just a caution from Bishop Fulton Sheen, “If through our lives we put a premium on the things of the world, then we will regard lightly the things of eternity.” May you be filled with joy and peace during this Advent season! At the end it is not about the presents but it is about the presence….that is--- the presence of Christ. Let us give ourselves the best Christmas ever! Your servant, Fr. Geoffrey

FAITH FORMATION YOUTH NEWS FIRST COMMUNION For 164 First Communion students who are in their second year of faith formation and attend Tuesday First Communion classes. Reconcilia-tion - As our young children preparing for Recon-ciliation continue to reflect this week on God’s gift of forgiveness, let us take an honest look at our own shortcomings and unloving choices that we sometimes make. Through prayers, thought-ful reflection on places in our lives where we may be in need of reconciliation, and by talking to each other honestly and gently about ways we hope to change, we are blessed and bring God’s blessings to others….we share in the peace of Christ….striving to live as peacemakers and making a difference in our home, school, work-place and community. REMINDER: Faith Formation classes resume Monday, November 28.

YOUTH MINISTRY St. Anne Youth Ministry will meet on Monday No-vember 28 at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall.
