Dear Parishioners, Ten years after my father’s death at the age of 53 in 1972, my mother decided to sell the family home. My father bought it shortly after coming home from serving in World War II, before he was married to my mother. Together they transformed it from a house to a home where they raised their six children. We had parties to celebrate the holidays, grad-uations, two weddings, and an ordination. For all of us, the home was a lasting link to my dad and how it used to be. At the age of 30, I remember going through both his personal “treasures” and also the family memorabilia that we had to dispose of since my mom was moving into a one-bedroom condo. It was a painful time for all of us. God is eternal and does not suffer the perishing of time. Even the most impressive building of massive proportions is still subject to the wear and tear, and in times of war, to human plunder. Our human nature leads us to the temptation that the divine imperish-ability will rub off on these earthly abodes. The shock of 9/11 was the death of thousands, and the incomprehensible fact that massive buildings came down in a matter of minutes in the center of New York City. The closing of parishes and schools which have been the sacred symbols of our faith is very unsettling. It rocks us to the core of our belief. All of us hopefully will recognize the loss and the pain that these individuals and communities are experiencing. There are some who predict the end of the Church, and others who are in denial of the challenges that are before us. I caution all of us not to overreact nor to put our heads in the sand. Yes, we all like to control our own situations, and this can be a healthy psychological response to a stressful situation. Perhaps the better approach, which is not easy by any means, is to adopt a positive lens. A positive lens is not to pretend that it’s 1965 and all is the same in the world but to look strategically at the things that we can control. In a sense, dealing creatively with the “facts on the ground” while holding onto the truth that the future is an un-known reality. Isn’t this what the faith in Jesus is all about? Trust in God, but work to make a difference realizing that it’s all pass-ing away. So what about our situation, you ask? It would be disingenuous to report to you that all is fine. As indi-cated in the Annual Report of last year (go to www.sjbrebeuf.org/bulletins, Oct 6, 2019) we are financially and pastorally under stress. We still have over 2,600 people attending mass each weekend, have a full schedule of masses and devotions, and plenty of service, social, and prayer opportunities. We are still, however, in need of new people to fill the shoes of those who are moving on because of health, other obligations, or it's “just time.”

Our Sunday Offertory continues to decline – a trend that has been gradual over several years. Our buildings and campus layout are exceptional, but at 60-plus years old the past-due capital repairs and necessary improve-ments are calling for immediate attention. We work to enhance our Religious Education Program to make it an effective tool for the formation of our young grade school children under our charge. Our excellent school has experienced steady enrollment, presently 246, with technology and other up-to-date tools to educate the mind and invigorate the faith. The school and religious education both equally advance the central mission of the parish, which is to pass on the faith to our children and to support our young families. We are one of a handful of parishes that has two young, talented priests -- over a third of parishes have only the pastor. In parishes that have two priests, one is often either retired or near retire-ment. I see so many good things going on here at St. John Brebeuf. We have happy, positive parents in the Religious Education Program and School; young couples are coming to us for the sacrament of marriage and to have their children baptized. We have individu-als who still step up to serve after 30-40 years of past service. God is Good! Yes, we have spectators, too, who are good and thoughtful but for some reason hold back. Perhaps this is due to a hurt, a misun-derstanding, or they are not sure if they can accept the responsi-bilities if given them. I pray that they open themselves to God's call and I apologize if I or any of my staff have become a stum-bling block. We have heard these slogans “One Goal” and “We're All In” from the sports world -- perhaps we all need to adopt these same attitudes here at SJB! Oh, by the way, my mom went back to work full time as a floor secretary at the local hospital, graduated from college, celebrated the ordination of my older brother to the priesthood, enjoyed her 13 grandchildren and 7 greatgrandchildren, and died at the age of 94 after living in a nursing home for ten years with her family surrounding her. Drodzy Parafianie, Dziesięć lat po śmierci mojego ojca, który zmarł w wieku 53 lat w 1972 roku, moja mama postanowiła sprzedać dom rodzinny. Mój ojciec kupił go wkrótce po powrocie do domu z II wojny światowej, zanim jeszcze ożenił się z mamą. Razem przekształcili go z budynku w dom, w którym wychowali sześcioro dzieci. Mieliśmy tam przyjęcia z okazji świąt, ukończenia szkoły, dwa wesela i święcenia. Dla nas wszystkich dom był trwałym łącznikiem z moim tatą i tym, jak było kiedyś. W wieku 30 lat pamiętam zarówno jego osobiste „skarby”, jak i rodzinne pamiątki, których musieliśmy się pozbyć, po tym jak moja mama przeprowadziła się do mieszkania z jedną sypialnią. To był bolesny czas dla nas wszystkich. Bóg jest wieczny i nie cierpi z powodu upływu czasu. Nawet najbardziej imponujący budynek o masywnych proporcjach wciąż podlega zużyciu, a w czasach wojny - ludzkiej grabieży. Nasza ludzka natura prowadzi nas do pokusy, że boska niezniszczalność zetrze te ziemskie dobra. Szokiem z 11 września była śmierć tysięcy ludzi i niezrozumiały fakt, że ogromne budynki zawaliły się w ciągu kilku minut w centrum Nowego Jorku. Zamykanie parafii i szkół, które były świętymi symbolami naszej wiary, jest bardzo niepokojące. Przenika nas to do sedna naszej wiary. Mamy nadzieję, że wszyscy z nas rozpoznamy stratę i ból z tego powodu. Są tacy, którzy przepowiadają koniec Kościoła, a inni zaprzeczają stojącym przed nami wyzwaniom. Przestrzegam nas wszystkich, aby nie przesadzać ani też nie chować głowy w piasek. Wszyscy lubimy kontrolować własne sytuacje, a to może być zdrowa psychologiczna reakcja na stresującą sytuację. Być może lepszym podejściem, które w żaden sposób nie jest łatwe, jest przyjęcie pozytywnego pryzmatu. Pozytywnym pryzmatem nie jest udawanie, że jest rok 1965 i wszystko jest takie samo na świecie, ale strategiczne spojrzenie na rzeczy, które możemy kontrolować. W pewnym sensie twórcze radzenie sobie z „faktami na ziemi”, przy jednoczesnym trzymaniu się prawdy, że przyszłość jest nieznaną rzeczywistością. Czy nie na tym polega wiara w Jezusa? Ufajcie Bogu, ale starajcie się coś zmienić, wiedząc, że wszystko przemija. A co z naszą sytuacją?. Byłoby nieuczciwe informowanie was, że wszystko jest w porządku. Jak wskazano w raporcie rocznym z ubiegłego roku (przejdź do www.sjbrebeuf.org/bulletins, 6 października 2019 r.), Jesteśmy pod presją finansową i pasterską. Nadal mamy ponad 2600 osób uczestniczących w Mszach Świętych w każdy weekend, mamy pełny harmonogram Mszy i nabożeństw oraz mnóstwo okazji do

służby, spotkań towarzyskich i modlitwy. Nadal jednak potrzebujemy nowych ludzi, aby zastąpic tych, którzy odchodzą z powodu zdrowia, braku czasu lub innych obowiązków . Nasza niedzielna składka wciąż spada - trend ten jest stopniowy od kilku lat. Nasze budynki i układ kampusu są wyjątkowe, ale w wieku ponad 60 lat zaległe naprawy kapitału i niezbędne ulepszenia wymagają natychmiastowej uwagi. Pracujemy nad udoskonaleniem naszego Programu Edukacji Religijnej, aby stał się skutecznym narzędziem formacji naszych młodych dzieci w wieku szkolnym pod naszym kierownictwem. Nasza doskonała szkoła zarejestrowala 246 studentow i prowadzi edukacje uzywajac nowoczesnej technologii, ktoea pomaga rozwojowi umysłu i ożywia wiare. Edukacja szkolna i religijna w równym stopniu wspiera centralną misję parafii, która polega na przekazywaniu wiary naszym dzieciom i wspieraniu naszych młodych rodzin. Jesteśmy jedną z niewielu parafii, która ma dwóch młodych, zdolnych kapłanów - ponad jedna trzecia parafii ma tylko proboszcza. W parafiach, które mają dwóch księży, jeden jest często na emeryturze lub blisko emerytury. Widzę tyle dobrych rzeczy, które dzieją się tutaj w St. John Brebeuf. Mamy szczęśliwych, pozytywnych rodziców w programie edukacji religijnej i szkole; młode pary przychodzą do nas po sakrament małżeństwa i chrzczą swoje dzieci. Mamy osoby, które nadal podejmują służbę po 30-40 latach wcześniejszej służby. Bóg jest dobry! Tak, mamy też tzw. widzów, którzy są dobrzy i troskliwi, ale z jakiegoś powodu powstrzymują się od służby. Być może jest to spowodowane zranieniem, nieporozumieniem lub nie są pewni, czy mogą przyjąć na siebie odpowiedzialność, jeśli zostanie im takowa powierzona. Modlę się, aby otworzyli się na Boże wezwanie i przepraszam, jeśli ja lub którykolwiek z moich pracowników stał się w jakimś stopniu przeszkodą. Słyszeliśmy te hasła „Jeden Cel” i „Wszyscy razem” ze świata sportu - być może wszyscy musimy przyjąć te same postawy tutaj w SJB! A tak przy okazji, moja mama wróciła do pracy na pełny etat jako sekretarka w miejscowym szpitalu, ukończyła college, świętowała święcenia mojego starszego brata do kapłaństwa, cieszyła się 13 wnukami i 7 prawnukami i zmarła w wieku 94 lat po dziesięciu latach pobytu w domu opieki z otaczającą ją rodziną. Blessings and congrat-ulations to Ed Ja-blonski who was re-cently chosen by the Archdiocesan Chicago Council of the St. Vin-cent de Paul Society to receive the 2019 Top Hat Award. The award is one given annually to a “person who is not a member, but by their assistance, helps the Society in an extraordinary way”. Ed was nominated by the St. John Brebeuf Conference of SVDP for helping with and transporting food for its monthly Soup Kitchen work in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, and distributing the 700+ Christmas gifts to the various locations for the annual Christ-mas gift program (coming up later this month).
