For Your Information Chanh Van Nguyen, a priest of the Diocese of Bac Ninh, North Vietnam, until recently serving in the Diocese of Lafayette, has published a book about sal-vation, and has been attempting to promote the book in Catholic parishes and other local venues in our Di-ocese. A number of its elements are considered in-compatible with Catholic doctrine and seriously devi-ate from the integrity of the truth of the Catholic faith. Given the nature of these doctrinal errors, the book should not be promoted under Catholic auspi-ces. Chanh Van Nguyen is currently on personal leave from priestly ministry; therefore, he should not be asked to address any Catholic group.

Save the Date Mark your calendar and plan to attend our parish Christmas Party on Sunday, December 13th, af-ter the 10 a.m. Mass. More details to come.

From the Pastor’s Desk

As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day this week, many will pause in gratitude. For some this will be an unfa-miliar practice, since sadly, some people have difficulty finding reasons for gratitude in their lives. For others, giving thanks will be much more regular practice, not limited to one day a year. Whatever the case, it is true that we don’t always find it easy to be grateful. This week, I ran across a reflection suggesting humility as a path to gratitude. I don’t think I had ever considered these two ways of grounding gratitude in true humility.

The first gift of humility comes through recognizing our need. I quote: “True gratitude instantly puts me in a place of realizing I am dependent on another. Whatever I have just received—whether it was a cup of coffee, a borrowed pen, or the deepest desire of my heart—someone beyond myself has just positively impacted me and made my life better. A western cultural mentality promotes the thinking that we somehow deserve whatever we have re-ceived, especially if money was involved. . . . God’s blessing comes in the way of life and love and is freely given to all.” In other words, true humility can set us free from that feeling of entitlement that seems to make gratitude unnec-essary.

The second gift of humility is rooted in the challenge of St. Ignatius Loyola to find God in all things. Again, I quote: “The enormity of God’s presence is easy to feel standing next to the vast ocean or staring up at a sky with a million stars, but even when I am heartbroken or scared, on the craziest of days or just standing in line at the depart-ment store, the moment that I reach for sincere gratitude I am bowled over by the enormity of God’s love and gra-ciousness in my life. How is it that with all my faults and failings, one mere creature of the billions on this earth, the God of all, the Creator of all, longs for me? How is it I have come to have this moment? True gratitude affirms the paradox of our smallness and God’s grandeur.” Humility teaches me that our God is longing for us and reaching out to us, even or perhaps especially in those moments when we feel most distant from his love. This longing for us on the part of God is always there, wherever we are and whatever we are doing. Humility reminds us that just because I don’t see it or feel it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Both these gifts of humility are particularly evident in our celebration of the Eucharist (a word which means ‘thanksgiving’). We come to Mass in our need, unworthy and dependent upon God’s gift of his life and love. And in that Eucharist, we not only bask in the presence of Christ but are enabled to go out into the world to share the good news, in humility and hope. Ample reason for gratitude, indeed!
