WTVP 47.1 HD

For many of us, November means Thanksgiving, but there is another day that should cause us all to pause, refl ect and give thanks. I am talking about Veterans Day, November 11, a day set aside to remember our veterans, living or dead, who serve our country in times of war and peace.

WTVP will air programs throughout November to recall the compelling stories of ordinary people caught up in madness of war. Grandpa’s War Story Goes Viraldocuments the World War II service of James Schmidt and his grandson’s efforts to tell the soldier’s remarkable story. In The Silent Soldier we learn the incredible war secrets that John Waller brought home from Europe and held his entire life. Homecoming: Sgt. Hamilton’s Long Journey is a poignant tribute to a 19-year-old Army gunner missing since 1945 and his long road home in 2019. We present a different perspective on the war with Japan in Unearthing Ogawa, the chronicle of a man’s search for the family of his father’s one-time enemy. Check page seven for more details.

As these stories fl icker past on the television, laptop or phone, pause and give thanks for these and all Americans, living or dead, who give so much to protect our freedom. Then ask a veteran to tell his or her most memorable tale and see your past — our past — come alive.

ROADKILLON MASTERPIECE

SUNDAYS, BEGINNING NOVEMBER 1, 8 PMRoadkill is about Peter Laurence (Hugh Laurie), a self-made forceful and charismatic politician. Peter’s public and private life seems to be falling apart — or rather is being picked apart by his enemies. As the personal revelations spiral, he is shamelessly untroubled by guilt or remorse, expertly walking a high wire between glory and catastrophe as he seeks to further his own agenda while others plot to bring him down. However, events show just how hard it is, for both an individual and a country, to leave the past behind. With enemies so close to home, can Peter Laurence ever out run his own secrets to win the ultimate prize?

DRIVEN TO ABSTRACTION SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 5:30 PM

Driven to Abstraction unravels a mutating tale of self-delusion, greed and fraud. This is the $80 million forgery scandal that rocked the art world and brought down Knoedler, New York City's oldest and most venerable gallery. Was the gallery's esteemed director the victim of a con artist who showed up with an endless treasure trove of previously unseen abstract expressionist masterpieces? Or did she eventually suspect they were fakes, yet continue to sell them for many millions of dollars for fi fteen years? Whatever the truth, two women from very different worlds were, wittingly or not, caught up in the greatest hoax ever of Modern American Art.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER

For many, November is a time for families. Like others, my family is scattered across the state and country, but we will reunite for several days around Thanksgiving. Sadly, there will be an empty seat this year due to a passing in late August. We will sit around the table, raise a glass of wine, retell old stories and remember her life.

WTVP does something similar with its locally produced documentaries. I think back to one of the fi rst specials I produced, Main Street Memories, which looked at life and businesses in the city during the 1940s. Many of the people I interviewed have since left us, but their Peoria is preserved to be shared with other generations.

To me, one of this station’s strengths is the ability to retell our community’s stories. No other media outlet can duplicate this work or invest the time that WTVP does. Documentaries such as From Distilleries to Stills: Prohibition in Peoria, Boxcar People and Peoria High School: A History remind viewers of the past and the people who are proud to call this region home.

It is only through the support of our members that WTVP can continue to research, shoot, edit and present local productions that look at the past and explore the issues facing us all today. Thank you for your contributions!

WEEKENDS

GRATEFUL: A SONG OF GIVING THANKSJOHN BUCCHINO AGE: 3-9This book and accompanying CD combine Art Garfunkel’s wonderful voice with beautiful illustrations and lyrics about everyday blessings by composer and lyricist John Bucchino.

GRATITUDE SOUPOLIVIA ROSEWOOD AGE: 4-8By using a thoughtful fairy as a relatable protagonist, Rosewood creates a surreal experience for children while conveying an important message: experiences, people, places and things that we’re grateful for are the ingredients that complete the recipe for thankfulness.

THE THANKFUL BOOK TODD PARR AGE: 5-6Todd Parr has perfected a way of communicating values to children in a way they can understand. This book follows suit, by helping children convey what they’re thankful for and what it means to be grateful.

AN AWESOME BOOK OF THANKSDALLAS CLAYTON AGE: 4-7This book is as enjoyable for kids as it is for parents: the illustrations, along with the characters, are out of the lines and out of this world, but the message hits home: it’s important to say thank you for the things we’re grateful for.

THE GIVING TREESHEL SILVERSTEIN AGE: 1-8An instant classic, Silverstein’s Giving Tree is the tale of a boy who learns a lesson of gratefulness the hard way: after it’s too late. The book leaves a haunting but uplifting message: the gift of giving and unconditional love should at least be appreciated, if not returned.

This Turkey Day, help your child learn the value of gratitude.

Thanksgiving can be a diffi cult concept for young kids to

understand. What does it mean to be thankful? Why are we

particularly grateful during this time of year?

What should they be thankful for? Sometimes the best

way to explain these concepts to kids is with books.

Check out these books to help educate your kids

on why being thankful is

so important.

Happy Thanksgiving!

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

ANDREW A. RANDChairman, IVPTC Board of Directors

People talk a lot about leadership. What makes a good leader? How do I become a better leader? What kind of leader do I want to be? An entire industry revolves around the answers to those questions. For WTVP, it comes down to a simple idea: “Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader, they set out to make a difference.”

WTVP is a leader in our community because we care about our viewers, members and supporters. We listen to their opinions about what individuals, businesses, educators, arts organizations, churches, charities and others want to see in their public television station, whether it’s on the air or in the community. This summer’s separation of World Channel and Create TV is a great example. Viewers had been asking for this for a couple of years and thanks to a timely donation, we were able to make it happen. Our locally produced documentaries are typically the result of community input, too. And when schools closed last spring, WTVP got to work and created WTVP REMOTE — another example of listening and leading to make a difference.

Never forget WTVP is licensed to the community and should refl ect the community it serves. That’s not just one city, it’s towns and cities all across Central Illinois. Thank you for helping us make a difference. Stay tuned and see what’s next!

WAR STORIESTUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 7 PMHenry Louis Gates, Jr. explores the roots of actor Julianne Moore, comedian Bill Hader, and painter Kehinde Wiley, revealing how their ancestors’ military service left an indelible mark on both their families and on their country.

FLIGHTTUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 7 PMActors Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong’o, and chef Lidia Bastianich, are three women whose families crisscrossed the globe to escape oppression and fi nd opportunity, leaving the women with questions about their relatives who stayed behind.

THE IMPRESSION TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 7 PMTwo guests linked by one hilarious impersonation trace their roots from 1940s Brooklyn back to Jewish communities in Europe. Larry David discovers his German heritage by way of ancestors who settled in Mobile, Alabama in the mid-19th century, including one who became a slaveholding Confederate. Bernie Sanders gains greater understanding of his father’s dangerous childhood in Austrian Galicia during World War I.

WTVPKLYSTRON SOCIETY

Don’s involvement with WTVP started in 2002 when he began volunteering during WTVP’s membership drives and became a WTVP member.

Don received the Louise Alloy Volunteer of Year Award in 2007. Mila joined in as a volunteer in 2009. Don and Mila work on the annual auction, with Don chairing our online auction division. He also works on all the WTVP membership drives training the studio volunteers in the largest downstate studio and state-of-the-art equipment.

“We are involved in WTVP because the staff and volunteers make you feel part of a family,” Mila says.

Don adds, “The variety of programming is important to us, from the scientifi c and technology-based programming like NOVA to the musical performances like Celtic Woman and Trans-Siberian Orchestra.”

In fact, Trans-Siberian Orchestra was one of the fi rst ticket opportunities Don received as a thank you gift for his WTVP membership. It also became the fi rst date for Mila and Don. They are a match made through public television.

“We invite you to join us as leading members of WTVP in the Klystron Society and as volunteers for the station who are furthering the mission of public media in Central Illinois,” Don says.

DEVELOPMENT

TEAMThe old saying goes, “We don’t get to choose our family.” Biologically, that’s true, but in a very real sense, the things that defi ne family transcend biological origins. The key ingredients in any family relationship are caring, empathy and compassion for the well-being of others. That broadens the circle greatly.

This distinction has become clear in recent months as longtime, faithful members of the WTVP family were taken from us. Among them was Bob Gilmore, former Caterpillar President and COO, a longtime community leader and giant of local philanthropy. Also, Terry Knueppel, a Peoria business pioneer, friend and generous supporter of the arts, education and many other causes. In August, we lost Mike Caringello of Pekin, a charter member of the board of directors and recipient of the Phil Weinberg Award for outstanding service to public and educational television. Back in March we lost Shirley Rochman, the WTVP programming director for many years. Also in August, WTVP Chairman of the Board, Andrew Rand, lost his mother, Eileen.

We are saddened that these cherished members of the WTVP family will no longer provide the guidance and perspective we have had for so many years.

The families of these important citizens will no doubt fi nd ways to preserve the memory of their loved ones. WTVP would like to take this moment to remind you of the ways we can help create a lasting legacy of quality public media through gifts by will, bequest and other planned giving:

• Endowment fund

• Memorials and tributes

• Bequests

• Wills and living trusts

• Retirement plans and benefi ciary designations

• Life insurance

• Charitable remainder trusts

• Lead trusts

• Gift annuities

• Stocks and mutual funds

Planned giving offers you fl exibility to balance personal fi nancial goals with your interest in supporting quality public media for future generations. Those who make provisions for WTVP in their estate plans are acknowledged as members of the Founder’s Society. WTVP’s future grows brighter and stronger with every gift.

Please let us know if you, too, have lost a loved one who you wish to remember. To learn more about planned giving and memorial opportunities, contact Luann Claudin at [email protected] or 309.677.4747, or Lesley Matuszak at [email protected] 309.677.4747.

MEMBERSHIP

WTVP is ushering in the season of joy and giving with a vast selection of new music, drama and comedy specials. After turkey, family, shopping and football join us for our Winter Membership Drive, November 27 – December 11! It’s television worth watching and programming worth supporting!

Membership drives are an important fundraising mechanism for WTVP. During select times throughout the year, PBS releases common carriage so local stations can air special programming designed to raise funds. It is through these opportunities that WTVP is able to reach new members and ask them to join you as a member of the station. Viewers call to make their annual contribution, ongoing sustainer support, additional gifts or rejoin the WTVP family. The dollars raised through our on-air fund drives make engaging and inspiring programs possible for all of Central Illinois. These drives, with your support, keep WTVP strong.

WTVP kicks off our winter membership drive with the premiere of Great Performances Lea Salonga In Concert featuring the Tony-winner singing her signature songs from Miss Saigon, Les Misérables, Aladdin, Mulan and more. Friday, November 27 at 8 PM.

The Pilgrims explores the forces, circumstances, personalities and events that converged to exile the English group in Holland and eventually propel their crossing to the New World: a story universally familiar in broad outline, but almost entirely unfamiliar to a general audience in its rich and compelling historical actuality.

NOVEMBER highlights

DOC WORLD: NO COUNTRY FOR THE POORSUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 9 PM

In Hungary, the government has slashed social benefi ts and criminalized homelessness, but a group of activists, homeless and middle class, is confronting authorities to defend social justice and their right to be citizens. After the tragic death of two of its founding members, the group feels that Hungary is growing more hostile and their struggle is more important than ever. Despite all odds, their own community keeps them going, a mini-society with democracy and solidarity at its heart, an island of hope, belonging and dignity, in a society gradually shifting the other way.

AMERICA REFRAMED: BLOOD MEMORYTUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 7 PM

As political scrutiny over native child welfare intensifi es, an adoption survivor helps others fi nd their way back home through song and ceremony. Blood Memory is a documentary that deals with the sinister eras of American history that attempted to culturally assimilate native people through the removal of their children.

AMERICA REFRAMED: THE BLESSINGTUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 7 PM

Filmed over the course of fi ve years, The Blessing follows a Navajo family for some of the most deeply personal and important moments in the characters' lives, from a miner enduring a life threatening injury and confronting the deep spiritual sacrifi ce he makes to provide for his family, to a young Navajo woman discovering her inner identity and managing the expectations of her traditional father while playing on the men’s varsity football team and being crowned homecoming queen.

34 November 2020 Guide. Visit WTVP.org for more information.

Our thanks to the Kiwanis Club of South-West Peoria for designating WTVP to receive 40 antennas to distribute to households in need for WTVP REMOTE learning, which were presented to Lesley Matuszak by Ron Givens of GIVSCO along with Kiwanis Club member Rod Jordan.

RECEIVING GENEROSITY

Linden Roberts may only be seven years old, but she is already a star in the making. Linden helped raise money for WTVP PBS Kids and we wanted to see how she would do on camera. She is a natural star in front of and behind the camera. Catch her WTVP promo airing at various times on WTVP

Erin Kennedy and Kim McClintic shared their knowledge of healthy eating and exercise with kids in the WTVP studio. Keep an eye out for these fun ladies from the Children’s Hospital of Illinois on your TV soon.

THE FUTURE OF WTVP

WTVP events

We can’t have a live audience in the WTVP studio because of COVID-19 restrictions, but we still can have a lot of fun. Look for War Muhammad featured on State & Waterthis spring as we kick off season 6.

BLUE SKY METROPOLIS: WINGS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 10 PM

Wings establishes Southern California as the undisputed aviation capital of the world, tracing its growth from the 1910 Los Angeles Air Meet to becoming America’s “arsenal of democracy” during World War II, led by Jack Northrop, Glenn Martin and Donald Douglas. Critics see an unhealthy alliance developing between the federal government and aircraft manufacturers.

BLUE SKY METROPOLIS: THE BIG CHILLWEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 10 PM

This episode traces how the Cold War and Pentagon dollars fund the explosive growth of modern Los Angeles and create the military-industrial complex. Entire suburbs such as Lakewood are built in record time to house defense industry workers, while also restricting non-white races from living there. Fear of nuclear annihilation spawns the science-fi ction genre for Hollywood.

BLUE SKY METROPOLIS: A SPACE ODYSSEYWEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 10 PM

The triumphant and tragic Space Race unfolds in the fi rst-hand accounts of those who pioneered the technology and built the hardware that made possible mankind’s greatest achievement, landing on the moon. Meantime, the military-industrial complex expands unchecked.

BLUE SKY METROPOLIS: BACK TO THE FUTUREWEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 10 PM

The end of the Cold War brings massive layoffs, but tech billionaires choose Southern California to launch their space companies, injecting new vigor to the industry in the region. Though committed to the “democratization” of space, SpaceX and Virgin Orbit include the Pentagon as a major customer.
