We are counting our blessings here at WAMC. We really do have the best audience in all of radio. When I hear about the trials and tribulations of other stations around the country, it is not really of comfort to me. On the contrary, I wish that our colleagues in public radio had an audience like ours. No kidding -- it is a reflection of the staff and audience that makes us what we are. So what is it about WAMC that allows us to count on all of you to make us whole? Just look at the last drive. We started on a Monday and ended the following Monday, just a little after 9:00 AM. Remarkably, we raised all that money, minus some money that you had contributed in the period leading up to the beginning, in just TWO HOURS A DAY. Plus, we still got to talk more than a little about what was going on in the world. Just think about how generous you have been. In the old days, we used to start our fund drives at 6:00 AM and then run several crews all day and into the night. With the onset of the COVID pandemic, it wasn’t safe to bring volunteers into the building. As a result, we asked that everyone just take those few hours every day to help raise the million dollars that we desperately need three times a year.

And while you may think that WE must be doing something right, I want to assure you that YOU are what is making it happen. It’s incredible how many people are putting generous challenges up to encourage people to give. Now, instead of raising money all day long, we get what we need in just a few hours a day. So many of you understood that we were going to need special help. Without you, we would have been in real trouble. People really went above and beyond. They did what they could. There were $50 donations and there were $25,000 challenges. My head was spinning as I saw that you were all so understanding and that you were not going to let WAMC fail. The genuine community spirit you showed made us all very proud. As you may know, during the pre-COVID fund drives, dozens of volunteers would come from all over the listening area to answer the phones and take your pledges. In the last few drives, however, our incredible staff members have taken up the slack. All over the buildings, staff would stop what they were doing and take your calls and somehow manage to get their day-to-day work done and programming like the news on the air. It was all under the direction of the incredible Amber Sickles. I have told you before that no one has ever done what she does as Fund Drive Director. When I say “no one” I mean NO one. I remember the days when the job that she does was considered impossible. She makes it seem simple, but I’ve been around here for a long time and I have never seen anything like what that woman accomplishes. So it adds up to an incredible staff effort, plus Amber and Joe Donahue devoting their time and effort to creating this thing I call a miracle. But more important even than that is the effort that YOU put into this. I don’t know what creates the consciousness that we are all in this together but whatever it is, we are all very grateful. What a staff! What an audience. What a genuine community we have all become.

PROGRAM NOTES TINA RENICK

This month we turn to some of our traditional programs to make us feel warm. As we fill ourselves with food, slip into warm clothes and enjoy lively conversations, WAMC keeps you feeling full with recipes, fun stories and food-inspired jazz tunes. Also, keep an ear out for our annual celebration of “Alice’s Restaurant.”

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING: Thursday, Nov. 25The Splendid Table’s “Turkey Confidential” is back this year for two hours of food and fun. Join host Francis Lam and his kitchen friends as they cure all your turkey woes. Prior to the show, you can submit questions regarding any food related topics to [email protected] or leave a voice message at 800- 537-5252. Airing at 9 a.m.Thanksgiving revolves around family, football, and most importantly, food. On “Feasting with the Great American Songbook,” we chow down on some food-related songs from the Great American Songbook. We’ll hear some odes to beans, cornbread, meat, and potatoes by some guys named Louis: Jordan, Armstrong, and Prima. Nat King Cole will also get in on the food-song fun starting at 11 a.m.

We’ll also hear the traditional noon broadcast of "Alice's Restaurant," the satirical talking blues song by singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie, released as the title track to his 1967 debut album “Alice's Restaurant.” The song is a deadpan protest against the Vietnam War draft, in the form of a comically exaggerated but essentially true story from Guthrie's own life.On Friday, Nov. 26, WAMC will present “Reel Music: Americana in Film.” Grab some leftover turkey and dressing, and settle in for an hour of themes from movies that capture the essence of small town America: “The Grapes of Wrath,” “East of Eden,” “Meet Me in St. Louis,” “Our Town,” “A River Runs Through It,” “A Christmas Story,” and “To Kill a Mockingbird,” beginning at 9 a.m.We’ll also celebrate the exploration of our land with A New York Minute in History’s “The Dutch And New Netherland.” Devin Lander and Lauren Roberts detail Henry Hudson’s exploration of what would become the Empire State, and how his journey up the aptly named Hudson River led to the Dutch settlement of New Netherland. Join us as we explore how the Dutch colony differed from its counterparts in New England and Virginia via relative tolerance, a multi-ethnic population and free trade. Airing at 2 p.m.

REGULAR PROGRAMMINGThis month “The Academic Minute” will feature segments on the cost of a college education, the vulnerability of online engagement, a new way to tackle the increasing wildfires in the western U.S., and the new epicenter of global terrorism. Tune in weekdays at 7:30 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. on WAMC or anytime online at academicminute.org.

This month on “Person Place Thing,” host Randy Cohen speaks with a journalist who has had a lifelong interest in China, Dorinda Elliott; a graphic artist whose clients include: Apple, the NBA, and Girl Scouts of the USA, Bobby C. Martin; composer and guitar player Kaki King; and an astronomer who studied both astrophysics and folklore, Dr. Moiya McTier. “Person Place Thing” airs Fridays at 10:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. On “Earth Wise,” host Dr. Randy Simon explores weather disasters that are on the rise. According to a new report from the World Meteorological Organization, weather disasters have become five times more common since 1970, and of the 77 weather-related disasters that struck between 2015 and 2017, 62 show the influence of human-caused climate change. We’ll also hear updates on Lake Powell and learn how the earth is dimming.

“Earth Wise” airs daily at 11:10 a.m. and 4:04 p.m. WAMCs Performing Arts Studio The Linda features the best live and local music and events in the Capital Region. We kick off the month with “Bad Bad Hats w.s.g. Brother Kody,” on Nov. 3, “Rochmon Records Listening Party, The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds” on Nov, 18 and “Memories of Patsy – The Patsy Cline Tribute Show” on Nov. 19.
