PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Lou Bono,SWS President

I hope everyone has been enjoying our new beautiful Texas fall weather – seems like we went straight from summer to winter after about a month of rain. Hopefully the rain has stopped for a bit and we can get out and paint before winter really sets in.

A huge thank you to Jo Williams for organizing a wonderful fall paint out in Gainesville, TX. We had seven intrepid SWS artists arrive Friday afternoon, October 19, during torrential rain. I was able to scout some points of interest near the old courthouse and the 1902 Santa Fe train depot, and even an old industrial metal recycling building with abandoned grain silos.

Friday evening we had a great dinner together at Sarah’s on the Square restaurant, sharing stories about each other’s art back-grounds and how we came to watercolor. Saturday’s weather was much better with no rain and three more members arrived. The evening reception, show-and-tell/happy hour was a success. We had fun admiring everyone’s art and having delicious catered hors d’oeuvres.

This year’s Western Federation of Watercolor Societies 44rd Exhibition is sponsored by the San Diego Watercolor Society and the entry DEADLINE is November 12, 2018. We look forward to a large representation of entries from our SWS membership. The full prospectus and requirements are avail-able on the SWS website under Exhibitions.

We wish you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday together. We have much to be thankful for.

Robyn Jorde took up watercolors five years ago because she thought they would be portable and perfect to take on trips. Robyn was a successful art director and illustrator so she expect-ed to do one or two practice paintings and then be able to paint wonderful memories of her travels.

She was so wrong. A couple of practice paintings only showed her how much she had to learn. She had discovered an exciting

medium which is full of sur-prises and possibilities. She knew right away that water-color had potential for her which she was determined to find.

This led to several fun and frustrating years of experi-menting which transformed her into an artist that used water-media primarily. In Robyn’s work, a big part of the fun is with all the different art materials that come into play: watercolor, gouache, ink, acrylic, watersoluble pencils and crayons, and so much more.

Although she works in a representational way, her artistic interests are actually abstract, and she believes that it’s the abstract qualities that make a painting strong. Shapes and their edge qualities, pattern, and texture consti-tute her current focus. Quick drying watermedia enables her to build them up

quickly.

Lately she’s been working with several differ-ent watercolor techniques. One is “reverse negative painting”, in which she floods the work surface with color and then lifts out the negative shapes. Another involves printing the paint onto the surface, rather than using a brush. Both of these techniques can be en-hanced with paint applied so dry that it goes down almost like pastel.

Another important part of her art practice is regular work from direct observation. She goes out every week with a group of friends to sketch on location throughout the DFW area. She is also active with Urban Sketchers and loves the paint outs that SWS organizes. There is

also plenty of subject matter around her own home. Nothing trains the brain and hand like working from life.

Contemporary artists whose work Robyn studies are Charlie Hunter, Maysey Craddock, Rebecca Crowell, and Lisa Breslow. Looking back into history, there are many others, especially the American Tonalists and Andrew Wy-eth. Trained as an illustrator, she returns to the work of Bernie Fuchs and Mark English. She’s also been influenced by the outstanding artists that she

has been able to study with because of SWS workshops. They have been an extremely diverse group, but she’s learned important lessons from every one.

This year she was extremely honored to receive the Naomi Brotherton Award, the highest honor awarded, at the SWS mem-bership show. She has also exhibited and been given awards in other juried, invita-tional, and group exhibitions.

Robyn is currently working on a solo show that goes up early next year.

October Membership Meeting

Gail Delger was the featured artist for the October member-ship meeting.

Gail demonstrated a painting process that began with a photo-graph of some forms that she then abstracts on the computer as flat shapes in arbitrary colors. Referencing that general pat-tern, she began applying paint in a progressively more intuitive manner. When the surface was covered with colors, textures, and shapes, she dried it before beginning to paint negatively and carve away some whimsical house shapes. The abstract colors and shapes began to take the appearance of a fanciful village or town. She said that the painting would receive ad-justments after the meeting but was full of joy and it was fun to watch her casual, enthusiastic approach to the painting.

At the end of the meeting, the pieces se-lected by the membership for paintings of the month were announced. The winners from the Beginner and Intermediate Category were

1st Place - Nick Kuntz, “Point Sur from Post Road”

2nd Place - Fred LaRue, “Big Dog”

3rd Place - Shannon Sultan, “Heritage Farmstead”

There were no entries in the Signature Members and Teachers category.

SWS RECENT EVENTS

Fall Paint Out in GainesvilleOn October 19th and 20th a resolute group of artists, led by organizer Jo Williams, traveled through thunderstorms to Gainesville, Texas for the Fall Paint Out. Gainesville was selected because it offers lots of great painting sites including the downtown square, the old railroad depot and several historic neighborhoods. There are also lovely sites at Lavender Ridge Farm 7 miles east of town and at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in nearby Lindsey. Luckily after a week of downpours, the skies were blue for a great day on Saturday.

The group met for dinner on Friday evening, gathered for painting location tips Saturday morning and then found their subject matter before setting to work. In the evening they all came together for an informal exhibition of the work created during the paintout and a group meal at Sarah’s on the Square. It was amazing how many pieces were done in those few hours. A shared passion for painting, good food, and high spirits prevailed.

He is also the author of the North Light publications, Painting With Your Artist’s Brain (a water-color book) and Drawing With Your Artist’s Brain. In addition his art has been featured in numerous articles published in Artist’s Maga-zine and in Splash I. He has been invited to jury exhibits in Colora-do, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Michigan and Califonia.

Workshop: Watercolor & the Secrets ofRealism,November 13, 2018 - November 15, 20189:00 am - 5:00 pm

Carl Purcell describes his upcoming workshop this way:

“The secret to realism in painting is not to be found in more details. Have you ever felt frustrat-ed because no matter how much detail you add, the painting does not match your inner vision? My approach can help you understand what you are seeing, and how to respond to the visual patterns that are the basic structure of all good painting. This is what I wish they had taught me at the university. I have spent my life searching for the keys to help me paint what I see. It has been a wonderful journey, and one I am happy to share with you.

Learn how to create paintings that match what you want and take less time. It will be fun.
