November Fun Facts!
In Australia, United States and Canada, this month is associated with Movember (moustache November), a movement that encourages men to grow a moustache as a symbol of celebrating men’s health and raise awareness regarding different male diseases.
The traditional flower of the month of November is the chrysanthemum. Depending on their color, chrysanthemums have different meanings: the red ones symbolize love, the white ones stand for innocence, and the yellow ones denote unrequited love.
Marge Lohre’s 100th Birthday Celebration!
Last month, on October 9th, Resident Marge turned 100 years old.
Festival of the Moon
On Ocotber 8th, Mr. Lee Peng and his
daughter Jenny Peng came to Chesterbrook
and explained the origin of the Chinese Moon
Festival. They spoke about the mythos and
the significance of the time of year, as well as
passing out a dessert eaten during this time, a
Moon Cake, filled with red bean paste inside a
pastry. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a harvest festival celebrated notably by the Chinese and Vietnamese people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with full moon at night, corresponding to late September to early October of the Gregorian calendar with a full moon at night.

Young Naval Officer
A young naval officer was in a terrible car accident, but due to the heroes of the hospital staff the only permanent injury was the loss of one ear. Since he wasn’t physically impaired he remained in the military and eventually became an Admiral. However, during his career he was always sensitive about his appearance. One day the Admiral was interviewing two Navy Master Chiefs and a Marine Gunnery Sergeant for his personal staff. The first Master Chief was a surface Navy type and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview the Admiral asked him, “do you notice anything different about me?” The Master Chief answered, “why yes, I couldn’t help notice you are missing your starboard ear, so I don’t know whether this impacts your hearing on that side.” The Admiral got very mad at his lack of tact and threw him out of his office. The next candidate, an Aviation Master Chief, when asked the same question, answered, “well yes, you seem to be short one ear.” The Admiral threw him out also. The third interview was with the Marine Gunnery Sergeant. He was articulate, extremely sharp, and seemed to know more than the two Master Chiefs put together. The Admiral wanted this guy but went ahead with the same question. “Do you notice anything different about me?” To his surprise, the gunnery sergeant Bob Lumenthal said, “Yes, you wear contact lenses.” The admiral was impressed and thought to himself, what an incredibly tactful marine. “And how do you know that?” the Admiral asked. The Gunny replied, “Well sir, it’s pretty hard to wear glasses with only one ear.”
Forest Gump Goes to Heaven
The day finally arrived: Forrest Gump dies and goes to
Heaven. He is at the pearly gates, met by Saint Peter
himself. Saint Peter says, “well Forrest, it’s certainly good
to see you. We have heard a lot about you, I must inform
you that the place is filling up fast, and we’ve been
administering an entrance examination for everyone. The
test is short, and you have to pass before you can get
into heaven.”
1) What days of the week begin with the letter T?
2) How many seconds are there in a year?
3) What is God’s first name?
Forrest says, “Well. The first one --- how many days in
the week begin with the letter “T”? That one’s easy, that’d
be today and tomorrow.”
The Saint’s eyes open wide and he exclaims, “Forrest,
that’s not what I was thinking, but… I’ll give you credit for
that answer. How about the second one?”
“Now that one’s harder,” says Forrest, “but I thunk and
thunk and guess the only answer it can be is twelve.”
Astounded, St. Peter says, “Twelve? Forrest, how in the
Heaven’s name could you come up with twelve seconds
in a year?”
“Sucks, there’s gotta be twelve: January 2nd, February
2nd, March 2nd…”
“Hold it,” interrupts St. Peter. “I see where you’re going
with this, and I’ll have to give you credit for that one, too.
Let’s go on with the next and final question. Can you tell
me God’s first name?”
“Sure,” Forrest replied. “It’s Andy.”
An exasperated Saint Peter said, “okay, I can understand
how you came up with your answers to my first two
questions, but how in the world did you come up with the
name of Andy as the first name of God?”
“That was the easiest one of all,” Forrest replied. “I learnt
it from the song: Andy walks with me/Andy talks with
me/Andy tells me I am his own.”
Saint Peter opens the pearly gates and said: “Run,
Forrest, Run."
Chesterbrook &
The Lincolnian
Chesterbrook Residence and The Lincolnian had their first joint activity, being a outing for lunch at Red Lobster. Both parties enjoyed the company and the food, and would like to have something similar again. Malikah, the former Activity Assistant of our community, and the now current Activity Director of The Lincolnian, reached out to our community for more joint activities sometime in the near future!
Happy Thanksgiving Day!
You are looking ahead to a great feast! Consumer Reports says “don’t overboard.” But I say, “ENJOY!” and while you are eating turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, green beans, cranberry juice and pumpkin pie, I’ll tell you the story of a little turkey named Edwardo, who visited the President on Thanksgiving Day. -Ruth LeDoux
Edwardo, the Sad Little Turkey By: Ruth LeDoux “How old are you? You are so skinny,” taunted Marco. “Did you hatch in the spring like me?” “Yeah,” said Edwardo. “No one will choose you to race in the big Turkey Race,” his biggest cousin, Noah, taunted. “They’ll put you in the Chicken Fly-About,” some of the other turkeys pestered. I wish I would be big and meaty like my cousins. They strut around like they own the farmland, thought Edwardo. Poor Edwardo. He couldn’t be like the big ones. Edwardo’s mother told him when he was very young that she thought he would never hatch. All the others hatched a week ahead of Edwardo. He shed tears, but she told him that his small size would be a blessing and not to worry about what the other birds said. A couple weeks passed and Thanksgiving was only a few days off. One dark night all the chickens and goats and the big turkeys, even little Edwardo were sleeping in Farmer Luke’s yard. A gun sounded. Shots were coming from someone who was shooting at the prize turkeys. Edwardo knew he must hide and he knew just where, since he often headed there when the other birds taunted him. Father Luke rushed outside and found all was quiet. He counted the dead birds and he was astonished to see little Edwardo. He hugged him and said he was going to take him to the President tomorrow to see the ceremony the President has for forgiven prize turkeys. The next day Edwardo was introduced to the president. He forgave little Edwardo. But the President’s grandchildren hugged little Edwardo and said we will keep him as a pet and tell all the world that Thanksgiving is a world-wide day to give thanks to the world.
